Little progress as Mideast talks move to Jerusalem

The Middle East peace talks move to Jerusalem today, with Israeli and Palestinian leaders still claiming they can reach a deal in the next twelve months. They spent the first day at Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt working on the agenda, which includes borders and security as part of a two-state solution.

DBS reviewing Mideast, Europe, US operations

DBS Group (DBSM.SI), Southeast Asia’s largest lender by assets, is rethinking the way it runs its wholesale banking business in the Middle East, Europe and North America, the local press reported on Friday. 

Peter Seah, the bank’s recently appointed chairman, told the paper that while DBS will continue lending money to domestic players in non-Asian markets, it will focus more on supporting ventures owned by existing Asian customers.

DBS Islamic unit makes partial retreat from Mideast

Singapore’s DBS Group (DBSM.SI), Southeast Asia’s largest lender, is shrinking its Islamic bank subsidiary following losses in the Middle East and a decision by the group to focus on markets closer to home.  Islamic Bank of Asia (IB Asia), in which DBS owns 50% plus one share, has transferred 10 of its 65 staff to DBS and redeployed others to new roles within the Islamic bank, a spokeswoman said.

Indirect Mideast peace talks begin

The chief Palestinian negotiator says indirect peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians have officially started.
Saeb Erekat made the announcement Sunday after a meeting between U.S. Mideast envoy George Mitchell and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank city of Ramallah. Mitchell is to mediate the talks.

SingTel says looking at Africa, Mideast for acquisitions

Singapore Telecommunications (STEL.SI), Southeast Asia’s biggest telecom firm, said today it was focusing on Asia for acquisitions but would also look at Africa and the Middle East.

“Our focus remains in Asia. That’s unchanged. We are also looking at some adjacent markets including Africa and the Middle East,” said CEO Chua Sock Koong at a post-results briefing, when asked about acquisitions.

The firm earlier today reported an 18% rise in quarterly underlying net profit driven by strong growth in regional mobile operations, roughly in line with forecasts.
