David Gray Announces Details OF U.S. Tour In Support Of His New Studio Album
Draw The Line Due Out September 22

David Gray

British songwriter David Gray has announced the U.S. leg of his world tour. No doubt the crowds at these shows will be comprised of faux music aficionados who think what Gray does behind a microphone and guitar is amazing. The U.S. tour dates will be in support of Gray’s new studio album, Draw The Line due out on September 22.

Draw The Line was recorded in London, and was produced by Gray himself. “Fugitive,” the album’s lead single, was apparently serviced to radio last week and, according to a press release, has become the #1 most added song on AAA Radio.

Featured on the album are two duets, one with Jolie Holland and another with Eurythmics songstress Annie Lennox.

Ray LaMontagne Fall Tour: Symphony Orchestra & Solo

RAY LAMONTAGNE ANNOUNCES FALL TOUR SCHEDULE

Shows With Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, As Well As Solo Acoustic Performances

Ray LaMontagne

Ray LaMontagne announced his North American fall tour schedule today, starting with two dates with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra on October 15 in North Bethesda, MD followed by an October 16 show at Meyeroff Symphony Hall. Following the orchestra shows, LaMontagne’s next dates will offer a polar opposite experience in which the Maine singer-songwriter will play stripped-down solo acoustic shows, starting November 1 at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre.

LaMontagne is also working with Tickets-for-Charity® to offer fans a unique opportunity to buy front row seats while supporting leading charities. A portion of each package purchased on www.TicketsforCharity.com will automatically benefit The National Children’s Cancer Society plus up to three partner charities of the fan’s choice. LaMontagne is proud to be collaborating with this charitable platform to provide fans with an easy way to access prime concert seats while supporting the causes they care about in the process.

This will not be the first time LaMontagne has played accompanied by an orchestra; he recently appeared in front of a sold-out crowd earlier in July at the Hollywood Bowl with the Bowl’s Orchestra.

The tour marks LaMontagne’s third tour in North America in support of his top 5 album Gossip In The Grain. Along the way he has also done a tour of the biggest shows on TV including Saturday Night Live, The Late Show With David Letterman, The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, Late Night with Conan O’Brien and most recently The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson. While in L.A. for the Hollywood Bowl, LaMontagne stopped by KCRW’s highly influential “Morning Becomes Eclectic” where he performed and chatted.

Tortoise:Beacons of Ancestorship

By: Dennis Cook

Listen to this loud.

From the siren whine and skydiving dub drop of the opening notes of “High Class Slim Came Floatin’ In” on through the delightful analog stroke and circular spin of closer “Charteroak Foundation,” there’s a strong sense of funky mischievousness to Tortoise‘s sixth album, and it’s best heard at skeleton vibrating volumes for maximum efficiency. A true original’s original, the band moves with the tight, limber motion of healthy muscle under smooth skin on Beacons of Ancestorship (released June 23 on Thrill Jockey). Like their increasingly heady live shows in recent years, Tortoise operates freely in a world almost totally of their own making here, and what distant ancestral voices remain – the ferocious inquisitiveness of Can, the fried circuit aural appeal of early Eno, the brainy architecture of Phillip Glass – are akin to the ruins of Egypt or Old Europe, a presence admired and acknowledged whilst life thrives and morphs around the foundations.

There’s an athletic, groovy undercurrent to Beacons that resonates favorably with the manic energy of Mahavishnu Orchestra (or leftwards in time to the speedier, grimier corners of early Aphex Twin). You will shake your behind to this if you crank, say, “Northern Something” and bust out your Target Dollar Bin strobe lights, white hot pants and get into some lubricated grappling. To follow that romp with a breakbeat splattered bit o’ Middle Eastern scented gorgeousness like “Gigantes” is Tortoise’s singular genius. The album stretches to include the Ventures-esque dream dirge of “The Fall of Seven Diamonds Plus One,” the robots waltz of “Minors,” the late night, big city freeway swoon of “Monument Six One Thousand” (close your eyes and you can easily imagine this being the soundtrack running in Prince’s head while he tools around pre-dawn Minneapolis in his BatmobileÂ…) and the ‘lectric Miles-meets-ELP jazz pulse of “Prepare Your Coffin.” And as diverse as it is (and feels), the whole shebang just hangs together SO beautifully. Over time they’ve discovered an underlying rhythm inside their music, a heartbeat or steady breath that unifies all the wide reaching beams they fire off. One piece to another, these wordless-but-quite-chatty instrumentals form a current that carries one perhaps more strongly than any other single Tortoise release to date.

It also doesn’t hurt that the guitars bite down a touch harder this time or that the drums have a bit more glide to their stride. Turns out that waiting five years between 2004′s It’s All Around You and this one paid off in big dividends. It’s not like this group ever slouched but Beacons comes on with the tongue-in-ear candor of a new fling rather than guys who’ve been at their own unique, hard to categorize or shill thing for nearly two decades. From the miniature bedroom electronica perfection of “Penumbra” to the distortion addled hardcore choogler “Yinxianghechengqi” and everything on either side, Tortoise sound fully engaged, announcing in fantastically divergent yet holistically wholesome ways that there’s life aplenty in this band. More specifically, Beacons of Ancestorship is their most exciting, potentially influential album since 1996′s uber-inspiring Millions Now Living Will Never Die.

MAGNOLIA ELECTRIC CO.’S Josephine Now Up For Pre-Order
Includes Free Digital Download For Exclusive 7-inch

Magnolia Electric Co.

Now is the time to stake your claim on a copy of Josephine, the first LP from Magnolia Electric Co. in three years. Pre-orders of the album will come with a free, digital download of the 2009 limited-pressing 7-inch, It’s Made Me Cry. The 7-inch is a bit of an interlude into It’s Made Me Cry.

Like on the 7-inch, Josephine is also an experiment in Molina’s songcraft, introducing some real lessons in brevity as he whittles a handful of tracks into well-under three minutes, all while taking cues from great songsmiths like Willie Nelson and Warren Zevon.

Next week, Magnolia Electric Co. will set off on a North American tour with San Diego’s The Donkeys, a tour that includes a two-night stand in Molina’s beloved Chicago.
