PM: Serbia EU candidate by end of 2011

Serbian PM Mirko Cvetković says he is convinced the country will become a candidate for EU membership by the end of this year. Cvetković, who is currently visiting Brussels, told B92 late on Monday that it was necessary to “make great effort and reach political agreement in Serbia”.

“Handover of answers is formality”

PM: Teachers’ requests unrealistic

Serbian PM Mirko Cvetković says teachers’ demands are unrealistic and that the government will not make concessions that would undermine economic stability.

He said that the demands of the teachers on strike for an increase of their earnings by 24 percent were unrealistic and could cause a chain reaction of demands for salary and pension increases that would lead to inflation and weaken the domestic currency.

PM “expects detailed investigation”

PM Mirko Cvetković says he expects a detailed investigation to follow the adoption of the PACE resolution on the allegations of organ trafficking in Kosovo. Cvetković told Tanjug that the resolution supports the Serbian government view that war crimes were committed by all sides during the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia, but added that Belgrade did not wish to turn the issue into a political matter.

Montenegrin PM on private visit

Montenegro’s new Prime Minister Igor LukÅ¡ić had talks with the president and prime minister of Serbia Boris Tadić and Mirko Cvetković. This took place during his private visit to Belgrade on Thursday, Beta news agency reported.

“Excise law will be changed if EU demands”

PM Mirko Cvetković said on Wednesday that the Excise Tax Law will be urgently changed. This will happen if the EU responds that Serbia’s excise rates violate European directives and the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA), he explained.

SAA ratification positive stimulus

According to the first reactions, adoption of Serbia’s Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) is a positive stimulus for further EU integration.

Serbian PM Mirko Cvetković has stated he expects that the SAA ratification would encourage other EU member states that still have not ratified the SAA to do so.

PM Mirko Cvetković says it is a realistic possibility that Serbia will be granted candidate status for EU membership by the end of the year, Beta reports.
He also expects a date for the start of membership talks to be given in 2011.

PM presents Serbia 2020 Strategy

Serbian PM Mirko Cvetković and his deputy Božidar Đelić presented the draft Serbia 2020 Strategy today.

The concept envisages an increase in employment, GDP, export and investments, and is intended to be the basis of a long-term strategy of the country’s development.

PM: Two pillars of economy in 2011

PM Mirko Cvetković says that the country’s economic policy in 2011 will be based on European integration and long-term development model for 2011-2020 period.

“The country’s aim is to achieve the EU candidate status by the end of 2011 and start negotiations on full EU membership,” he said at the annual meeting of the Serbian Chamber of Commerce.

PM had “narrow escape” in plane drama

Serbian PM Mirko Cvetković was on his way to Bulgaria on Thursday when he abruptly returned to Belgrade due to problems with the aircraft.

While the PM was reading his itinerary, the pilot informed the passengers that there were technical problems with the plane which caused it to lose altitude.

Govt., unions say they reached agreement

PM Mirko Cvetković and representatives of trade unions today in Belgrade reached an agreement on proposed changes to the pension law, said reports. The government announced in a statement that the meeting concluded that the government would in the next two weeks set up two working groups, made up of its members and those from the unions.

PM talks economy, Kosovo, NATO

Unions warn government ahead of meeting

A trade unions negotiating team is set to meet with PM Mirko Cvetković in Belgrade this Friday.
They will discuss the draft changes to the Pension and Disability Insurance Law which was sent back to parliament this week unchanged, after it was withdrawn from procedure the week before.

PM announces liberalization of oil market

PM Mirko Cvetković today announced that cell phone taxes will be abolished, along with the liberalization of the oil derivatives market. He told a conference in Belgrade on Wednesday that customs rates will also be abolished in line with the process of EU accession, and that the country would do away with railway traffic monopoly.
