Southern California’s EDC is a combination of musical sets by top-tier electronic musicians from around the globe on five stages; large scale art installations by a selection of artists whose works have also shown at Coachella and/or Burning Man; high end light and sound production; carnival rides; and a surreal assortment of performers who create a carnival atmosphere. Last year’s event (its first as a two-day festival since it began in 1996) drew over 135,000 attendees: 45,000 on Friday (June 26, 2009) and 90,000 on Saturday (June 27, 2009), with the latter figure ranking EDC as one of the largest single day attended music festivals in the U.S.

While a full schedule has not been announced yet, there are some bigger names are scheduled:

Friday: Moby (DJ Set), Deadmau5 Live, Armand Van Helden

Saturday: Armin Van Buuren, Groove Armada (DJ Set), MSTRKRFT

Tickets are available online now via www.insomniac.com and www.electricdaisycarnival.com as well as at select independent retail outlets.

Moby: Wait for Me

By: Greg Gargiulo

There’s no shortage of waiting, but not a whole lot of payoff either on Moby‘s newest, Wait for Me (Little Idiot/Mute). After slightly stepping out of character to craft his upbeat tribute to the club scene with 2008′s Last Night, which proved to be a predominantly successful endeavor, Moby has returned to his ambient roots. Only problem is in his absence the roots have become dry and dull, and the product they’ve yielded this time lacks enough substance to really lift it off the ground.

Moby arose from a strictly ambient background, and those elements have shone through to some capacity on everything he’s put out ever since. But there’s usually something else thrown in – techno, deep blues, big beat, gospel, hip hop, etc. – to mix it up and keep it interesting, as the case has been with his previous four releases. With the much more somber Wait for Me, it’s more-or-less a repetition exercise in a lot of the same: sweeping organ synths that only hit about three or four notes, a basic drum pattern looped, possibly some additional background effects, and various vocal phrases that range from a Baptist preacher (“Study War”) to a mock Ziggy-era David Bowie wannabe (“Mistake”). There are a few glimmers of promise that pop up sporadically, especially on “Scream Pilots,” “Wait for Me” and “Isolate,” but they each falter in their own way and none pull enough weight to salvage the rest of the album, leaving you waiting no more and reaching for Moby’s earlier stuff instead.

A Deluxe Edition of this album was released this week with extra tracks and a DVD.

Moby Vs. Domestic Violence

CALIFORNIA SHELTERS SCORE NEW ALLY

Moby

“An unlikely tipping point in the fight against domestic violence? Moby.”
- Los Angeles Times (10/15/09)

After reading that California had cut funding for domestic violence victims, award-winning recording artist Moby took action. Pledging all proceeds from his three California tour dates to victims of domestic violence, Moby also partnered with the California Partnership To End Domestic Violence
(CPEDV) and Senator Leland Yee (D-San Francisco) to raise awareness and funding for this critical issue.

“Sometimes there are simple cases of doing the right thing,” says Moby. “Lobbying the state legislature to re-instate funding for domestic violence programs seemed – simply – like the right thing to do.”

On October 21, 2009, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger (R-Los Angeles) signed emergency legislation introduced by Senator Leland Yee to restore $16.3 million for 94 shelters and centers throughout California. This comes nearly three months after Governor Schwarzenegger eliminated all state funding for domestic violence shelters – leading to statewide closures and cutbacks.

Yee’s legislation – supported by statewide and local domestic violence prevention agencies – allocates $16.3 million in emergency funds. This is a step in the right direction – but a permanent funding source still must be secured since this is just a one-year fix.

The Domestic Violence Program funds allow local agencies to provide emergency shelter, transitional housing, and legal advocacy, as well as assistance with restraining orders, counseling and other vital support services. Domestic violence shelters are often the only thing standing between victims and grave physical danger, and California’s communities cannot sustain their loss.

For a list of shelters and programs at risk of closure, visit here. If you are a victim of domestic violence or if you want to report an incident of domestic violence, call the 24-hour-a-day toll-free National Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233), 1-800-787-3224 (TDD) or the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence at 1-800-524-4765.

Moby’s newest album, Wait For Me is in stores now. A special edition deluxe version of Wait For Me goes on sale November 24, 2009.
