DBS off 0.1%; RBS China buy deemed modest

DBS’ (D05.SG) acquisition of RBS’ China retail and commercial banking business is unlikely to have a material impact on its shares in the near-term.

The operations won’t be contributing to DBS soon with the deal expected to be completed within 6 months.

The impact upon completion may also be modest as DBS will get only about 25,000 customers from RBS, which is selling its operations in Shanghai, Beijing and Shenzhen.

Wilmar +0.8%; modest impact from FFM buy – Nomura

Wilmar’s (F34.SG) 20% stake investment in PPB Group’s (4065.KU) unit FFM in bid to expand flour milling business doing little to boost investor interest. Stock +0.8% at $6.06 but volume paltry as underlying concerns over plantation group’s China business still persist given Beijing’s bid to rein in food inflation.

Wilmar will pay MYR378.1 million ($156.8 million) for stake in FFM, which operates 4 flour mills in Malaysia, 1 each in Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia.

STI +0.4%; modest gains amid pre-holiday caution

STI last +0.4% at 3237.01, tracking gains across region after U.S. markets respond positively to Fed’s US$600 billion ($771 billion) easing program.

But gains fairly modest so far, reflecting investor caution ahead of long weekend (during which U.S. payrolls will be released), with Singapore markets shut tomorrow for public holiday; “I think we’ll probably get a little bit of a chance to take profit because the market has done very well recently and we’re going into a long weekend…that makes sentiment a little bit more jittery,” says analyst at local brokerage.

Modest fall in Singapore developers with China ops

Shares of Singapore-listed developers with China operations mostly down, but decline in line with broad market pullback, not accompanied by heavy volume, suggesting investors not overly concerned about impact of Beijing’s latest measures to rein in home prices, says Dow Jones.

View backed by current gains in shares of China-listed developers.

DBS 2Q net profit growth likely modest: Poll

DBS Group (D05.SG) 2Q net profit likely grew modest 3.6% on-year to $572 million, according to Dow Jones poll of five analysts.

Look for weakness in net interest income despite likely growth in loan book, also non-interest revenues probably hit by global market correction in 2Q.

Bottom line likely supported by lower provisions.

“Among Singapore banks, we think DBS has the most potential to disappoint in terms of earnings downside risk, given its larger interbank market exposure,” says Goldman Sachs.

Analysts expect DBS 2Q earnings to underperform results from peers OCBC (O39.SG), UOB (U11.SG), which due next month. DBS results due before market open Friday.

180º South: Modest Mouse Shins, Jennings Jack Johnson

CHRIS MALLOY’S 180° SOUTH SOUNDTRACK TO FEATURE ORIGINAL SONGS BY
UGLY CASANOVA (ISAAC BROCK OF MODEST MOUSE), JAMES MERCER (THE SHINS) & MASON JENNINGS
ALSO FEATURES SONGS BY JACK JOHNSON & LOVE AS LAUGHTER

Mason Jennings

Brushfire Records will release the original soundtrack to director Chris Malloy‘s film 180°
South
on June 22, 2010. The 180° South soundtrack features new music from James
Mercer
(The Shins, Broken Bells w/Danger Mouse), Mason Jennings and Ugly Casanova (Isaac Brock of Modest
Mouse
with various collaborators) – all of whom participated significantly in the overall film project. Songs by
Jack Johnson and Love as Laughter also appear, as well as
James Mercer’s cover of Neil Young‘s
“Journey Through The Past.” The compilation was assembled by the film’s producer, Emmett Malloy, who recently
directed The White Stripes‘ “Under
Great White Northern Lights”.

180° South (select markets nationwide) retraces Yvon Chouinard‘s and Doug Tompkins
epic 1968 journey
to
Patagonia through the eyes of adventurer Jeff Johnson. Along the way, Jeff is shipwrecked off Easter
Island, surfs the
longest wave of his life and plans a rare ascent of Cerro Corcovado. Jeff’s life takes a turn when he meets with his
heroes Chouinard and Tompkins, now spending their fortunes to save Patagonia’s wild lands from damming and
development. Director Chris Malloy’s film strikes deeply into the heart of Patagonia’s wilderness – it was there,
during the making of the film that the soundtrack was conceived.

Mason Jennings and James Mercer visited Patagonia during the shooting of the film. Deeply impacted, they spent the following weeks, months and years that followed, writing music and enlisting friends such as Modest Mouse’s Isaac
Brock and Jack Johnson to help get the soundtrack made.

“When we had a rough edit of the movie, we headed to Portland to Isaac’s studio to record the soundtrack for
180º
South
. Pulling up to an old two-story craftsman house, we could hear the peaceful sound of guitars through
the
windows” says producer Emmett Malloy. Chris and I stopped and stared up at the attic, completely captivated. It was not long before we were
watching footage and going over ideas and it wasn’t long after that before we heard banjo, trumpet, squeezebox,
drums and harmonies coming from every corner of the house. That did not stop for almost two weeks.”

Track listing:

1. “MOUNTAINS OF STORMS” – Ugly Casanova
2. “HERE’S TO NOW” – Ugly Casanova
3. “MACHINES” – Mason Jennings
4. “DOUG’S THEME” – James Mercer
5. “WAVE GOODBYE” – Ugly Casanova
6. “LONESOME BLUES” – Ugly Casanova
7. “JOURNEY THROUGH THE PAST” – James Mercer
8. “HOTCHA GIRLS” – Ugly Casanova
9. “SPRING WIND” – Jack Johnson
10. “MAYBE WE’RE LOST” – Ugly Casanova
11. “CORCOVADO” – Ugly Casanova
12. “COCONUT FLAKES” – Love as Laughter
13. “THE GEEZER” – Ugly Casanova

Out-of-print on vinyl for the past five years, 12″ copies of The Moon & Antarctica have become prized
collector’s items.

Available in time for Record Store Day 2010, The Moon & Antarctica, newly-struck on 12″ heavy double

A modest proposal

A presidential commission may provide a start on cutting America’s deficit, but not much more

AMERICA is spending beyond its means, both parties and the president (not to mention pundits and protesters) have recognised. But cutting budgets is tough politics, which is why special commissions are at times called in to make recommendations away from the legislative hurly-burly. On Thursday Feburary 18th Barack Obama announced that he was forming such as commission, by executive order, to seek ways to tackle the deficit. Will it work?

The commission will be co-chaired by a long-time former Republican senator, Alan Simpson, and a Democratic former chief of staff to Bill Clinton, Erskine Bowles. The rest of the panel will include four more appointees from Mr Obama (one must be a non-Democrat), and three each for the Republican and Democratic leaders of both the House and the Senate. It can thus have no more than ten Democrats, and has to approve its recommendations by 14 votes, making bipartisanship a must. It is scheduled to report by December 1st this year, shortly after the mid-term congressional elections. …

“Patriarch’s death reveals people want modest leadership”

The funeral of Patriarch Pavle showed that the people want their leaders to show humility and modesty in these tough times, a B92 TV talk show heard. Political science professor and historian Slobodan B. Marković said that the funeral of the late head of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) last week was “one of the four largest in the past 100 years in Serbia”, counting the funerals of King Aleksandar, Yugoslav President Josip Broz and assassinated Prime Minister Zoran ĐinÄ‘ić.

REVIEW: Firefox 3.6, Google Chrome 4.0 Betas Show Modest Advances

Based on tests of new beta versions, neither Firefox 3.6 nor Google Chrome 4.0 will be major steps forward for the browsers. The only significant new feature in the Chrome 4.0 beta is Bookmark Sync. The Firefox 3.6 beta boasts more new features than the Chrome 4.0 beta, but none are groundbreaking.
– In the new tradition of rapid browser evolution, both Google and
Mozilla have recently released new beta versions: Chrome 4.0 and
Firefox 3.6, respectively.
Looking at the version numbers, one would expect that Firefox 3.6
would have minor changes and Chrome 4.0 would be a major upgrade.
