Sarah Palin and the state of the Republican Party

EVER since Abraham Lincoln made a virtue of log cabins, crafting the right autobiography has been an essential task for anyone seeking high office in America. On Monday November 16th Sarah Palin, ex-governor of Alaska and failed vice-presidential candidate in 2008, made an eagerly awaited appearance on the Oprah Winfrey show, as part of the launch of her biography. That book, “Going Rogue”, is already topping the bestseller charts, as readers rush to read about gossip and infighting during last year’s presidential campaign and to size up Mrs Palin herself.

On television on Monday Mrs Palin talked about her time as John McCain’s running mate. She recalled an awkward series of unflattering television interviews with Katie Couric, in which Mrs Palin struggled to answer simple questions about international affairs, calling the occasion a “gotcha” moment. She added that the media had no understanding of ordinary people like her and her family. Mrs Palin has also given an acerbic narrative of how she was “mishandled” by Mr McCain’s advisers, whom she says tried to hide her away from the spotlight. Mr McCain has diplomatically called the book “a good account” of the campaign, but he has not responded to Mrs Palin’s claim that she was not repaid a $50,000 fee for vetting her background. …

FOLK MUSIC OF THE PUREST AND FINEST SORT

Dougie MacLean

Mondays frequently begin with a lingering malaise, the aftermath of weekends gone well (or poorly) or the general urgency of a new week encroaching quicker than one might like. If there a zillion cliches about this day, they surely find their roots in lived-in truths many of us experience. Well, few things shake off that malaise better than a sweet song or three delivered with earnest conviction, something simple yet striking down to things deep. And few offer up better music of this sort than Scotland’s Dougie MacLean. We present two classics and a recent tune from MacLean’s expansive catalog to help ease you into a new week a touch more gently. Even if you’ve never been to Caledonia there’s something universally touching in Dougie’s wistful reverie.

Monday Melody: Marillion

THE OPEN ROAD IS INFINITELY HOPEFUL

Marillion

Much of the best advice is simple and practical. We modern folks tend to thrive on complication but it’s hard to improve on a hammer. And frequently the music that most informs our days, that most frequently scores our slow pilgrim’s progress, tends to get right down to the nitty gritty. In a week where many of us will be traveling long miles towards say Indio, California or Yosemite or New York City to celebrate another Halloween amongst likeminded revelers, it seemed appropriate to offer some pragmatic road music to kick off the week.

Marillion‘s recent output is chock full of good advice, including the simple encouragement to “Don’t Hurt Yourself” and the quiet reminder that while destinations are swell “Happiness Is The Road.” Safe travels and a strong wind at your back wished for all the musical travelers this week!

IT’S OKAY TO WONDER, JUST DON’T BE AFRAID

Flowmotion

The future is always unknown. We can conjecture and plan but the actual passage of time is fraught with potholes and rainbows we never see coming. However, we can hope for beautiful tomorrows rich with fulfillment and free of strife. And sometimes all we need to set us on such a path is the right song. Thus, we offer you Flowmotion‘s “How I Know,” a song with the nearness and grandeur of the best U2, that also offers us a taste of their forthcoming new album this winter. May this tune help you find some positive winds to fill your sails this new week!

Monday Melody: Jimmy Cliff

BY AND BY, THEY’RE ON THEIR WAY

Jimmy Cliff

Some voices are ideal for pulling us into positivity, and Jimmy Cliff seems put on Earth with this purpose in mind. While nearly anyone with ears is familiar with “I Can See Clearly Now,” there’s a river of joyful music inside this man. We present y’all with one of our faves, “Better Days Are Coming,” off 1975′s Struggling Man, an under-heard sleeper in Cliff’s huge catalog, to help motivate you as another week gets rolling.

STILL TIME TO RENT THAT COTTAGE IN THE ISLE OF WHITE

Aimee Mann

Few bands wrote about the delights and anxieties of love with greater insight than The Beatles, which may explain their enduring presence and endless cover tune inspiration. We thought it’d be swell to kick off the week with a pair of fine interpretations, with Aimee Mann and Michael Penn doing the hand holding and the Del McCoury Band doing the hand wringing.

And check out JamBase’s exclusive interview with Aimee Mann from 2008.

WE TAKE WING WITH ONE OF THE GREAT ROCK BANDS OF OUR TIME

Crowes by Josh Miller

Today is the release date of Before The FrostÂ…Until The Freeze, the latest salvo from JamBase faves The Black Crowes, and we’re celebrating with a baker’s dozen of their finest, including a healthy sprinkling of new tracks to whet your appetite. If last year’s Warpaint showed the group shoring up their core qualities, the new double record finds them exploring fresh, organically creative pathways, some strikingly different than anything in their past, further evidence that their artistic renaissance continues apace. We’ll have a full review of Before The FrostÂ… later this week, but in the meantime let this assortment of Monday Melodies put a little giddy-up in your stride and a lil’ love in your heartÂ….

For those interested in singling out the new tunes, they are “Make Glad,” “Been A Long Time (Waiting On Love),” “I Ain’t Hiding,” “Good Morning Captain” and “What Is Home.”
