16 Best Worst Films

There are plenty of really bad movies out there, but few transcend their awfulness, and loop back around to being so bad they’re good. Movies that are so unavoidably bad, that you can’t help but watch. Best experienced when exceedingly drunk (or using other substances), with a group of friends, and a willingness to yell [...]

5 Easy Steps To Reach Perfection In Everything You Do

Are you frustrated by the lack of perfection in your life? Are you fed up with all the mediocrity that surrounds you? If you’d like to vanquish uncertainty and mediocrity and replace them with joyful perfection, you’ve come to the right place!

I discovered these 5 breakthrough steps as I backpacked across Mongolia with two of my best friends. It was very late in the evening when we walked into a tiny village with a name I still can’t pronounce. In spite of our blinding exhaustion, we noticed an overwhelming joy radiating from every person we passed. We stayed in that village for almost a month and it was during that time I sat with the town leaders and learned the steps I’m about to share with you.

Of course, it’s impossible to reach perfection. There’s no village in Mongolia with inexplicably joyful people walking around in a haze of perfection. There are no hidden keys to happy living that I can reveal to you in 5 easy steps.

So why do we pretend? Why do productivity writers pander to base instincts and sacrifice real conversations on the altar of quick points? Why do you, as a reader, often exhibit such an appetite for articles written with intense certainty about subjects you know to be too complex for any single article?

Easily digested content is just as easily forgotten. Do you really want to bemusedly read the same steps to a “productive life” over and over as they’re re-purposed across the internet and paired with some inspiring image?

Or have we possibly grown as an online community to the point where a writer like myself can share an imperfect concept and figure out an optimal solution through subsequent commentary and email exchanges with readers? With YOU?

Let’s discuss.

A row over mining taxes in Australia: Digging in a minefield

A government proposal exposes a rich seam of discord

MINING, as both the firms doing it in Australia and the government would acknowledge, is the goose that laid the golden egg. But the two camps have sharply divergent views of the government’s proposed new tax on it: it is either an innocent egg-collecting operation or a vicious goose-killer. The so-called Resource Super-Profits Tax (RSPT) would be levied from 2012 on mining profits above a “normal” rate of return (defined as the ten-year government bond yield, currently below 6%), at the stiff rate of 40%.

After details of the proposed tax were unveiled a month ago, the boss of at least one huge global mining firm was reportedly livid. Mick Davis, chief executive of Xstrata, called the tax the “biggest assault on the mining industry I have witnessed.” Rio Tinto’s Tom Albanese also chipped in, branding Australia his “number one” sovereign risk, ahead of several countries not known for their stability, including Guinea and Mongolia. …

Apr 23: Keppel Corp, Noble Group, Renewable Energy, Cheung Woh, Courage Marine

Singapore’s benchmark Straits Times Index (.FTSTI) rose 0.44% yesterday to 2,980.69 points. US stocks staged a late-day comeback last night as strong quarterly profits from consumer bellwethers like Starbucks Corp (SBUX.O) outweighed worries about Greece’s shaky finances.

Keppel Corp, the world’s largest offshore oil rig-maker, said its outlook is brightening after strong orders in the first quarter and it posted a better-than-expected 13% rise in profit.

Noble Group said it has acquired 25% stake in Mexican port terminal, Terminales Portuarias del Pacifico. The company did not disclose the financial details of the deal.

Renewable Energy Asia Group has won a $7.4 million contract to design, manufacture and supply wind turbine towers for a 49.5 megawatt (MW) wind farm located in Huaishuo, Guyang County, Inner Mongolia.

Reading the tea leaves at New York’s Asian Art Week

THE most obvious lesson to be drawn from Asian Art Week, an annual festival of New York sales that ended on March 26th, was that demand from buyers in mainland China is growing ever stronger. This was especially the case for jades, imperial porcelain, cloisonne, scholars’ items and furniture. In stark contrast to Western buyers, for whom collecting Chinese art is a pastime enjoyed by the middle-aged and the elderly, Chinese buyers are often young and wealthy and hail from all over China—not just Beijing and Shanghai, but as far afield as Yunan, Xian and Mongolia. They are part of a growing fraternity that regards bringing home national treasures as one of the highest expressions of patriotism.

“At the very top of the market, the Chinese still face competition from the richest and most determined European and American buyers,” says James Hennessy, of Littleton & Hennessy, a dealer that bids on behalf of a number of Western and Asian collectors. “But almost every lot up to $500,000 was snapped up by collectors from the mainland. They are out in force, buying whatever they can lay their hands on.” Mr Hennessy’s partner, Richard Littleton, was pleased to have bought three important lots in that price range, including a low-standing early Ming lacquer table inlaid with mother of pearl, for which he paid $134,500, well over the top estimate. He also bought a large greenish-grey jade dragon seal consigned by a French family that had acquired it in the early 1900s. The seal was estimated at $20,000-30,000, but three energetic telephone bidders forced Mr Littleton to pay $434,500 for it in the end. …

The Soundtrack of Our Lives | 02.27 | S.F.

Words by: Lindsay Colip | Images by: Steven Walter

The Soundtrack of Our Lives :: 02.27.10 :: The Independent :: San Francisco, CA

The Soundtrack of Our Lives :: 02.27 :: S.F.

They call themselves the “greatest living, six-piece, space rock ‘n’ roll band in the history of the eardrum,” and they might be right. The Soundtrack of Our Lives put on one of the best shows I saw during San Francisco’s Noise Pop Festival (read more about Noise Pop here). The Swedish rock band kicked, jumped, and played their hearts out at The Independent, a brilliant venue that allowed both the intimacy to connect with the audience and the much needed space to accommodate all six rockers. There was so much happening onstage, so much pulsating energy, so many people to watch; I felt like I had been thrown into a wash/spin cycle. It was clear from the first note of “Babel On” that I was going to be under their spell for the entire set and I was more than happy to oblige.

Soundtrack is comprised of Ebbot Lundberg (vox), Ian Person (guitar, vox), Mattias Bärjed (guitar, vox), Martin Hederos (keys), Fredrik Sandsten (drums) and Kalle Gustafsson Jerneholm (bass, vox). They’ve been playing together as a family for 15 years and have put out six albums, with the most recent being Communion in 2008. Their core sound is rock, with some psychedelic, alternative, folk and gospel hints. Frontman Lundberg has serious stage presence. Often seen wearing a long robe and scarf of sorts, he is reminiscent of a religious/spiritual leader waiving his hands in the air, almost like he’s summoning the music gods. His raspy, gritty voice makes you believe he’s been through a lot, lived a lot and seen a lot. And no doubt he has. They all have.

When I spoke to the band they talked about the wildest places they’d played in the past 15 years. Mongolia was at the top of their list, mainly concerning the food they had to eat. They were forced to eat tripe and apparently tripe is furry. Furry? “Yes. It IS furry,” they insisted. They’ve rocked in every corner of the world, including near the Pyramids in Egypt, where Bärjed was chased by 200 screaming fans because they thought he was Michael Jackson. The only place the guys haven’t been to yet is South America, and it’s next on the list.

The Soundtrack of Our Lives :: 02.27 :: S.F.

With several world tours under their belt, six albums and 15 years together, TSOOL are as comfortable and perfectly worn as your favorite pair of jeans. They play with character, love of their craft and full throttle energy. They sweat. They do jump kicks. They belt out lyrics. They’re like a messier Rolling Stones, a folksier Oasis, and even a nice nod to the Grateful Dead. They write the music first and the lyrics come, as Lundberg says, “by coincidence.” They’re not polished or predictable, but wild and rough.

Speaking of wild, Bärjed wears a pretty fantastic fire engine red pant/jumpsuit whilst slaying his guitar. Billy Crudup’s character (Russell Hammond, lead guitarist of Stillwater) in Almost Famous could’ve easily been based on Bärjed. I was half expecting him to yell, “I AM A GOLDEN GOD!!!” Hederos was a treat to watch on keys, extremely enthusiastic, singing his heart out and pounding away, hardly touching his seat. All the guys were rock stars, but there wasn’t a scene-stealer in the group, and I think that’s due in part to their longevity playing together and their love for each other. Watching them perform and talking with them you can tell that they feel a strong collective bond, a brotherhood of sorts. The biggest bonus is that they genuinely have a good time playing together. They are having a riot onstage, which in turn makes us have a riot.

During the set, they played both oldies as well as newer songs from Communion, but my favorites were “Flipside” and “Lost Prophets In Vain,” where everyone was singing along.

If you’re new to these guys, download “The Passover,” “Babel On” or “The New Messiah” to get a feel for their flavor. San Francisco was one of their last stops before heading back to Sweden and they certainly gave us something to look forward to – their return.

Super Coffeemix posts 55% jump in net profit to $40.4m

Super Coffeemix Manufacturing, the manufacturer and distributor of instant coffee and convenience food products, posted a 55% jump in net profit to $40.4 million for the financial year ended Dec 31 2009 (FY09) due to higher gross profit margin and a net gain from investment securities.

This occurred despite a 1% decrease in revenue to $296.3 million in FY09 from $300.2 million in FY08 mainly due to lower demand from the Mongolia, South Africa and Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) markets. However, the group’s core markets of Southeast Asia and East Asia continued to perform well and grow.

Ozomatli

Los Angeles culture-mashers Ozomatli are set to release their new album, Fire Away April 20 on Mercer Street Records / Downtown Records.

Fire Away is the Grammy Award-winning band’s fifth studio full-length, and first for the NYC based Mercer Street Records / Downtown Records. Produced by acclaimed producer Tony Berg (Aimee Mann, Pete Yorn), Fire Away features eleven new Ozo songs.

Ozomatli’s music is a collision of hip hop and salsa, dancehall and cumbia, samba and funk, merengue and comparsa, East LA R&B and New Orleans second line, Jamaican ragga and Indian raga.

2009 proved to be a busy year for Ozomatli, serving as U.S. cultural ambassadors with a U.S. sponsored State Department trip that included Ozomatli community outreach and performances in Myanmar, Vietnam, and Thailand. The band was also honored to play for President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute’s 32nd Annual Award Gala, held in Washington DC in September.

March brings two shows at the SXSW Festival in Austin, collaborating with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra as well as the Boston Pops Orchestra for the 125th Pops Anniversary Celebration in early May, and once again serving as U.S. Cultural Ambassadors with a State Department trip to China and Mongolia.

The hunt for rare earths: Abundant in Inner Mongolia

China has cornered the market in some indispensable minerals

WHAT do smart bombs, euro banknotes and headphones have in common? They all contain “rare earths”: 17 obscure chemical elements, sales of which add up to less than $2 billion each year. But without them, industries worth trillions of dollars would grind to a halt. Their phosphorescent and magnetic properties make them indispensable for electronic displays in mobile phones, portable music players and plasma televisions. They are also used to make proliferating green goods, including wind turbines, energy-efficient lighting and batteries for electric cars.

Most rare earths are not that rare, but they are difficult to find in concentrations worth mining that are untainted by uranium. About 95% of the world’s supply comes from China, where production is dominated by the state-controlled Inner Mongolia Baotou Steel Rare-Earth Hi-Tech Company. “The Chinese realised the strategic importance of rare earths decades before the West,” says Alistair Stephens of Arafura Resources, in Perth, Australia. Deng Xiaoping, declaring rare earths to be the oil of China, encouraged the development of mines in the mid-1980s. Prices fell dramatically and existing mines in America were priced out of business. …
