Serbia, Macedonia and Montenegro will most probably receive a visa-free regime for travel to the EU by the end of 2009, says Slovenian IM Katarina Kresal. Speaking at at the 9th Regional Ministerial Conference on Illegal Migration, Organized Crime, Corruption and Terrorism in Brdo pri Kranju, Slovenia, Kresal said that Albania and Bosnia-Herzegovina still had work to do.

Driver dies in mountain crash
A traffic accident on Mt. Zlatibor in western Serbia left one person dead on Saturday, while four were injured. The crash happened when Balša K., 39, from Bijelo Polje in Montenegro, for as yet unknown reasons lost control of his WV Golf 4 as he traveled from Nova Varoš toward Užice, police said.
Elez and gang had Montenegrin ties

Jeremić orders internal investigation
Foreign Minister Vuk Jeremić has ordered a probe after the media reported that Montenegro’s candidate for ambassador to Serbia was “unwelcome”. The “urgent investigation” will include “everyone”: from his cabinet chief to the ministry’s human resources clerks, Belgrade daily VeÄenje Novosti writes.
Montenegrin teachers on verge of strike
The school year might not begin on September 1 in Montenegro, after announcements of a possible strike by the Teachers’ Union. According to the union, classes would not begin on September 1 if it is confirmed that teachers’ wages will be decreased this year.
Red notice over war-time deportation
Montenegro has issued a red international Interpol notice for the arrest of five people, including the former head of the state security agency, DB. They are wanted on suspicion that they deported 79 refugees – Bosnian Muslims and Serbs – back to the war-torn country in May 1992.
Red Star supporter group leader shot dead
A Serbian man shot and killed in Igalo, Montenegro, on Friday, was one of the leaders of a Red Star FC supporters’ group. According to the media in Podgorica, the victim was identified as 27-year-old Marko Vesnić. His friend Ivan Marković, aka Ćili, was lightly injured.
Greeks highest bidders for EPCG
A Greek consortium has offered the highest bid to buy 18.3 percent of Montenegro’s energy company EPCG, according to reports. Greek news agency ANA says that the consortium is lead by public energy company PPC, and also includes privately-held firm Golden Energy One – member of Restis Group.
NGOs warn of Kosovo “ghettoizationâ€
A group of NGOs from Kosovo has sent a letter to the EU calling for a revision of the European Commission’s visa liberalization recommendation. The European Commission adopted a recommendation last week calling for visa liberalization for Macedonia, Serbia and Montenegro by January 2010, while insisting that Bosnia-Herzegovina and Albanian fulfill added conditions before receiving the same recommendation.
Rehn hands Äukanović EC questionnaire
European Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn has handed a European Commission questionnaire to Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Äukanović. This is a mechanism through which the European Commission will evaluate Montenegro’s readiness to receive EU candidate status.
Rehn begins Balkan tour in Belgrade
EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn has arrived in Belgrade at the start of a three-day tour of the Western Balkans. Rehn arrives in Belgrade seven days after the European Commission adopted recommendations to scrap the visa regime for citizens of Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia traveling to the EU by January 1, 2010.
“Recognizing Kosovo speeded up EU integration”
Montenegrin Foreign Minister Milan Roćen says that Podgorica’s European integration has accelerated since the recognition of Kosovo’s unilateral independence. Responding to an MP’s question on what benefit Montenegro had had from recognizing Kosovo, Roćen said that it had confirmed that Montenegro was a reliable neighbor ready to cooperate with everyone, and that it had bolstered its foreign policy credibility.
Montenegrin swine flue count up
Montenegro currently has 18 confirmed cases of swine flue, the Ministry of Health in Podgorica has announced. Four new patients were identified: two who attended Novi Sad’s EXIT festival, one who was in Belgrade for the Student Games, and another who arrived from Germany.
Report: EC to propose visa liberalization
The European Commission (EC) adopted unanimously on Tuesday recommendations for visa liberalization for Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia. EU diplomatic sources told Tanjug news agency that the recommendations relate to period starting January 1, 2010.
Montenegrin envoy in Belgrade “soon”
Montenegrin President Filip Vujanović says that his country will soon have its ambassador in Belgrade. Podgorica’s top diplomatic envoy to Serbia was expelled last year after Montenegro recognized Kosovo Albanians’ independence declaration.
