For many, New Year’s Eve is pejoratively referred to as “Amateur Night”, due in large part to overhyped/overpriced
New Year’s parties that never quite meet expectations, sardine-packed bars, and the sheer number of people
getting twisted on libations and losing their wits. Those who frequent this web site and likely attend one of the
choices on
the full menu of live music events being offered nationwide probably share the sentiment that New Year’s
Eve is the night of all nights in the live music world, a chance to see one of your favorite bands stretch it out, try on
a few musical costumes and put their signature stamp on the back end of the year. After Widespread Panic in ’09 and My Morning Jacket in ’08, this year
the show of choice was Moon
Taxi
in Nashville, and a chance to see a band I’ve been lucky enough to watch progress from the very
early days playing tiny bars and college parties in Music City.

At Nashville’s famed Exit/In down on Elliston Place, the local workhorse virtuosos displayed a level of
professionalism and precision only attainable from weeks of planning and practice. As a musician friend aptly put it,
this show was a statement for the band. The performance included a host of covers, the band’s genre-
bending and well sung array of originals, numerous special guests, and a blinding assortment of pop songs
from 2010 to bade adieu to the year in impressive fashion. The Alabama-bred and Music City based quintet has
relentlessly toured over the past several years and organically attained a sizeable and loyal fanbase in the Music
City, as well as their native Birmingham. The past couple years have been especially prosperous as Moon Taxi
continues to gain notoriety nationwide as a rising star in the jam scene, in large thanks to numerous major festival
appearances and supporting slots on major tours. This year’s event sold out in advance, perhaps indicating that a
notch up to a larger venue for the occasion in 2011 may be in order. Musically, there are few young bands out there
brimming over with this level of talent and a genuinely infectious enthusiasm that emanates with every note.
Particularly, guitarist/vocalist Trevor Terndrup has the rare ability to engage the person in the back of the
room and command their keen interest, the sort of lead singer who actually sounds even better in person than on
record, a rarity.

As any band should know, New Year’s Eve calls for a little something extra (which is usually built into the ticket price
- however, this one was a bargain considering what we got) calling for a few additional days of practice to learn
some new cover songs and a rearrangement of some originals. After Friday, it is evident that this is a familiar
formula that Moon Taxi already seems to have mastered for their New Years shows. The venue’s web site misstated
the starting time for the show, but luckily we got down to the show early and only missed the show opener, walking
into an already roaring scene as the band took on the relatively older song “Mustang” from 2007′s debut LP
Melodica with it’s appropriate lyrics for such a bacchanalian occasion: Raise my glass tonight/I say we
can fly if the wind is right
. After a chunk of newer songs and a couple including a drum line (which didn’t make
too much of a difference until their guest spot on the encore), a guest tenor sax player joined in for a first-rate take
on MJ’s “Thriller” towards the end of the first set. The lighting display was demonstrably thought out and a nice
accent to the music onstage, and notably pronounced, even in the relatively small 500 or so person venue. Before
taking a set break, the band seamlessly tore through an incongruous, yet cohesive medley of radio-friendly hit
songs from the past year, which included verses from Justin Bieber’s tear-your-ears-out/annoying song
“Baby”, Mumford and Son’s, Lady Gaga, Ke$ha, Vampire Weekend,
Cee-Lo’s “Fuck You” and amusingly capping the medley with “Bed Intruder Song” (easily the crowd favorite
of the medley), the YouTube sensation-turned hit “hide yo kids/hide yo wife” song. The medley was a brief, year-
in-review style retrospect on the good, bad and the ugly from pop radio and a jaw-dropping display of this young
band’s canyon-esque depth on both a musical and vocal front. One of those wow moments that had
everyone turning to the person next to them, wide-eyed and grinning, asking if that really just happened.

After a brief intermission, the band returned to the stage just minutes before midnight, counted down, raised a glass
and busted through “Auld Lang Syne” amongst balloons and a confetti cannon shower, creating a unique and colorful
scene inside the generally dark and drab venue (endearing qualities generally speaking). With the lighting display
and New Years decorations, Exit/In actually took on a little bit more of a festive demeanor for the special night.
Next, it was The Who classic “Baba O’Reilly”, an excellent cover choice to ring in the new year, giving
keyboard player Wes Bailey an opportunity to show off his remarkable ability on this tune, certainly staking
a claim as a rising star on his instrument of choice. A lightning fast run through the Talking Heads “Life
During Wartime” was an ideal mid-stride second set addition to help keep the high-energy crowd thriving.
Throughout the evening, lead singer Trevor Terndrup showcased his exceptional vocal talent (in the
musical progeny of Sublime‘s Bradley Nowell) that seems to work best within the reggae/dub
milieu, but is limber enough to sing metal, rock and country when duty calls for it. The inspired presentation
oscillated healthily between lighter, groovier fare and New Years raucous-inducements (including the first
successful stage dive I’ve seen in countless shows at Exit/In), as evidenced by the oxymoronic new slow jam “Square
Circles”, the dead ringer dub odyssey of “Here To Stay”, and the proggy second set closer “Whiskey Sunset”. Finally,
the tribal/drum-line’d take on Billy Joel’s “River of Dreams” helped send the crowd on their way into the
soggy night in a blissed-out stupor, raving about what they had just taken part in, as local DJ Kidsmeal
kept the after party spinning late into the night.

Moon Capital acquires 4.9% stake in Design Studio for $8.1m

Design Studio Furniture Manufacturer, the product and interior fit-out specialist, says Moon Capital Management LP, one of the leading global investment advisory firms based in New York with an office in Singapore, has acquired 4.9% of the company representing 12.5 million shares on Nov 22. 10 NASA Missions to the Moon, Mars and Beyond

Scientists have detected more than 40 ice-filled craters in the moon’s North Pole using data from a NASA radar that flew aboard India’s Chandrayaan-I.

The Americans may still go to the moon before the Chinese

WHEN America’s space agency, NASA, announced its spending plans in February, some people worried that its cancellation of the Constellation moon programme had ended any hopes of Americans returning to the Earth’s rocky satellite. The next footprints on the lunar regolith were therefore thought likely to be Chinese. Now, though, the private sector is arguing that the new spending plan actually makes it more likely America will return to the moon.

The new plan encourages firms to compete to provide transport to low Earth orbit (LEO). The budget proposes $6 billion over five years to spur the development of commercial crew and cargo services to the international space station. This money will be spent on “man-rating” existing rockets, such as Boeing’s Atlas V, and on developing new spacecraft that could be launched on many different rockets. The point of all this activity is to create healthy private-sector competition for transport to the space station—and in doing so to drive down the cost of getting into space. …

President Obama’s 2011 budget dramatically changes the course of U.S. manned spaceflight plans, dropping efforts to return to the moon by 2020 and instead focusing on extending the life of the International Space Station. Richard Lloyd: 3rd Stone From Marquee Moon

“I’ve been in the public eye since 1975 and I have never once spoken about the fact that I knew Hendrix,” proclaims former Television guitarist Richard Lloyd. I’m speaking to the NYC punk legend about his recently released album of Jimi Hendrix covers, The Jamie Neverts Story (released September 1, 2009 on Parasol Records), which finds Lloyd setting fire to such Jimi staples as “Spanish Castle Magic,” “Ain’t No Telling,” “Bold As Love” and “Little Miss Lover,” which features Television drummer Billy Ficca behind the kit. “I got close enough to Jimi for him to sock me and to cry on me.”

We all know that Jimi Hendrix had his hands in a lot of pies (both literally and figuratively) back when he roamed the earth, as the rumors, innuendos and bootleg recordings of him working with everybody from Miles Davis to Mahavishnu’s John McLaughlin to members of Traffic to B.B. King to Jim Morrison can certainly attest. However, few could have called the existence of the guitar legend’s connection to the downtown NYC punk scene, albeit a good seven years before it even took off. But thanks to the friendship between Lloyd and his high school-age best friend, Velvert Turner, famous for being Hendrix’s sole guitar student, Jimi’s unexpected ties to CBGB have been confirmed through his roundabout acquaintance with Lloyd, whose own revolutionary, serpentine guitar style he created alongside frontman/guitarist Tom Verlaine in Television, has inspired nearly three generations of guitarists himself.

“Mr. Turner was an accomplished guitarist who crossed paths with Jimi Hendrix as a young teenager growing up in New York City in 1966,” stated the 2000 death notice in The New York Times for Turner, whose sole 1972 album, The Velvert Turner Group, is one of the great lost psychedelic soul albums of the era. “He was befriended by Hendrix, who recognized the young scholar’s passion for the electric guitar. The legendary guitarist served as a mentor to Mr. Turner, offering both guitar instruction and professional advice to the young musician.”

Unfortunately, at the time, few people believed that a poor kid from the inner city could have struck up such camaraderie with one of the most recognizable figures in rock ‘n’ roll, so Velvert’s claims of knowing Hendrix would often be met with laughter and doubt from skeptics. Except for Lloyd, whose chance meeting with Turner at a mutual friend’s house in Greenwich Village back in the summer of 1968 would eventually lead to his own brief acquaintance with Jimi.

“I was at somebody’s house and they said Velvert was coming over and that he claimed to know Hendrix,” Lloyd explains, “and that everyone should laugh at him because it was plainly impossible for a skinny black kid from Brooklyn to know Jimi Hendrix. And I said to myself, ‘Well, Jimi doesn’t live on Mars. He has to know somebody, why not this kid?’ So, I believed him and our friendship grew out of that.”

According to the very well written liner notes penned by Lloyd that accompany The Jamie Neverts Story, Velvert told the crowd that Hendrix was in town to play a show at The Singer Bowl, which, according to Lloyd, was “some place in Queens with a revolving stage.” Jimi used to book himself into various hotels around the city under a secret pseudonym, one that Velvert knew, and to silence his skeptics at the Greenwich Village apartment, he called the hotel he knew Jimi was at that day, the Warwick Hotel, and let the line ring and ring, passing the phone around the table to his naysayers until it got to Lloyd.

“On the second ring, I heard the phone being picked up and the unmistakable voice on the other end,” he explains in the notes. “It was Jimi saying, ‘Hey man, what’s up? Who’s this?’ I didn’t know what to say, so I said, ‘It’s Velvert, man!’ and handed the phone to Velvert who snuck away in the corner for a long, whispered conversation. In the meantime, the other guys were grilling me. ‘Was it really Jimi? What did he say?’ I told him I recognized his voice, and there was no mistaking it. It was Jimi.”

As a reward for believing him, Velvert took Lloyd as his “+1″ to Hendrix’s concert out in Queens and the two became best friends shortly thereafter. And from there, whenever Turner would come back from his guitar lessons with Jimi, he would show the young virtuoso the chops he learned that day, helping Lloyd develop the unique style of playing he would soon craft as his own in Television.

“Jimi Hendrix didn’t teach guitar to people,” Lloyd states. “Only to Velvert. And Velvert passed on what he was doing with Jimi to me, because we were best friends and when he left Jimi’s place, he was only a couple of blocks from my house, so we would practice together.”

Lloyd himself would later experience his own private encounter with Hendrix after attending a secret club gig Jimi was playing while he was in town rehearsing for the New Year’s Eve shows at the Fillmore East that would make up the guitarist’s classic 1970 live album Band of Gypsys, which also doubled as the guitarist’s 27th birthday party. Lloyd was supposed to meet Turner at Salvation, a club in the West Village, and when the guitar prodigy never showed up Lloyd bought a ticket to the show and soon found himself sitting at a table with Jimi and his entourage after sneaking backstage. According to his liner notes, he wound up sitting right next to Hendrix at this table, who ended up drunkenly talking his ear off, confiding in Lloyd about how he felt trapped by his fame and his fears that he was only being used by people like some kind of a clown and how his handlers weren’t allowing him to fully explore what he wanted to on a musical level. Not knowing that Hendrix didn’t take kindly to compliments, Lloyd gushed about how much he loved his guitar playing and that he shouldn’t be so hard on himself, to which he was met with a trio of punches dealt by Jimi, only to find the guitarist waiting outside the club for him in order to apologize after Lloyd hid out in the club in fear of being beat up by members of Hendrix’s crew who thought he picked a fight with the guitar hero.

For Lloyd, he sees the making of The Jamie Neverts Story, the title of which comes from a made-up code name Lloyd and Turner would use for Hendrix to conceal his identity to their nosy friends, as not just a tribute to his best friend but as an obligation to Velvert and Jimi for the gifts they had bestowed upon him as a guitar player.

“This is where I got a lot of what I do on guitar,” Lloyd, who teaches guitar himself these days and counts Wilco‘s Jeff Tweedy amongst his alumni, reflects. “I don’t think, either in Television or my own work, that anybody would have spotted a Hendrix influence. But I didn’t want one to show up. When I teach students, I teach them to play more like themselves. You’re gonna have to find your own voice on that guitar. What Hendrix and Velvert taught me is very, very important to me. Both of them are gone, and all I have is the memories. And the fact that I was around then, that’s why I feel like I owe them, as a payment of a debt, to cover some of Jimi’s songs, put it out and let some of that influence – that has always been there – finally show itself.”

Lunar Eclipse, Blue Moon Mark New Year’s Eve

Once in a blue moon, as the saying goes, there are two full moons in a single calendar month, which NASA says happens every 2.5 years. A blue moon on New Year’s Eve is much rarer, last happening in 1990. Even rarer, though, is the partial lunar eclipse that will accompany the blue moon.
– Not only is the decade going to end on a blue moon the second appearance of
a full moon in a calendar month but also a partial eclipse of the moon, at
least for sky watchers in Europe, Africa and Asia. A partial lunar eclipse
occurs when the moon is partially darkened by the Earth’s shadow.

Lars Blackstrom, a Facebook data scientist, said he and his team looked at how many times each phrase with length from one to four words occurred in U.S. Facebook status updates, then computed the rate at which each phrase occurred in 2009 relative to 2008. Anyway you look at it, NASA enjoyed a very successful 2009. From the refurbishing of the space telescope Hubble to the discovery of water on the moon to Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte’s trip to the International Space Station to comedian Stephen Colbert’s winning of a NASA naming contest, space was in the news, which is always a good thing for NASA. There is water—or, at least ice—on the moon

THE moon is covered with seas, oceans and bays, the result of astronomers from past centuries whose imaginations out-ran the capabilities of their instruments, and who assumed that the Earth’s nearest neighbour was not that dissimilar to its mother planet. Modern astronomers know different. The moon is airless, waterless, weatherless and lifeless. Or so it would appear. But some have clung to the hope that the waterless bit applies only to liquid water, and that there might be places on the moon which harbour ice.

The places in question would be deep in craters at the moon’s poles—places, in other words, where the sun don’t shine. The ice, the hope went, would have arrived on board comets that crash at random on to the moon’s surface. Calculations suggest that enough of these would have fallen into the perpetual darkness of some of the polar craters, over the billions of years those craters have existed, to build up a reasonable supply of frozen water. And that, inevitably, has got the space cadets who wish to build permanently crewed bases on the moon in a tizzy. Any base would need a water supply. If that water did not have to be shipped from Earth, then the cost of establishing one might be brought down from the totally ridiculous to the merely absurd. …

Artificial satellites are helping farmers boost crop yields

FOR farmers, working out the optimal amount of seed, fertiliser, pesticide and water to scatter on a field can make, or break, the subsequent harvest. Regular laboratory analyses of soil and plant samples from various parts of the field can help—but such expertise is costly, and often unavailable. A new and cheaper method of doing this analysis, though, is now on offer. Precise prescriptions for growing crops can be obtained quickly, and less expensively, by measuring electromagnetic radiation reflected from farmland. The data are collected by orbiting satellites.

The spectrum of this radiation—which can be in the form of either natural sunlight or artificial radar—can reveal, with surprising precision, the properties of the soil, the quantity of crop being grown, and the levels in those crops of chlorophyll, various minerals, moisture and other indicators of their quality. If recent and forecast weather data are added to the mix, detailed maps can be produced indicating exactly how, where and when crops should be grown. The service usually costs less than $15 per hectare for a handful of readings a year, and can increase yields by as much as 10%. …

A prize for a moon lander will be won this month

IF PEOPLE are to explore the moon again they will need ways of travelling across the lunar surface and also of digging holes in it. But because America’s space agency, NASA, spends most of its money on the space station and the shuttle, little is left over for the innovative research and development in areas such as these that many people think it should be carrying out in the first place.

The answer NASA has come up with is something it calls its Centennial Challenges. These are a series of prizes for technological achievement in areas such as beamed power, lunar landers and the extraction of oxygen from lunar regolith (the crushed rock that passes for soil on the moon).
