The Doors Respond To Florida’s Pardon Of Jim Morrison

40 YEARS AFTER MEDIA AND COURT CIRCUS, THE DOORS SPEAK OUT

The Doors

In the wake of Florida’s decision to issue a pardon to Jim Morrison of The Doors more than 40 years after
his alleged obscene acts on a Miami stage, his bandmates Ray Manzarek, John Densmore and Robby
Krieger
issued this statement:

In 1969 the Doors played an infamous concert in Miami, Florida. Accounts vary as to what actually happened on
stage that night.

Whatever took place that night ended with The Doors sharing beers and laughter in the dressing room with the Miami
police, who acted as security at the venue that evening. No arrests were made. The next day we flew off to Jamaica
for a few days’ vacation before our planned 20-city tour of America.

That tour never materialized. Four days later, warrants were issued in Miami for the arrest of Morrison on trumped-
up charges of indecency, public obscenity, and general rock-and-roll revelry. Every city The Doors were booked into
canceled their engagement.

A circus of fire-and-brimstone “decency” rallies, grand jury investigations and apocalyptic editorials followed – not
to mention allegations ranging from the unsubstantiated (he exposed himself) to the fantastic (the Doors were
“inciting a riot” but also “hypnotizing” the crowd).

In August, Jim Morrison went on trial in Miami. He was acquitted on all but two misdemeanor charges and sentenced
to six months’ hard labor in Raiford Penitentiary. He was appealing this conviction when he died in Paris on July 3,
1971. Four decades after the fact, with Jim an icon for multiple generations – and those who railed against him now
a laughingstock – Florida has seen fit to issue a pardon.

We don’t feel Jim needs to be pardoned for anything.

His performance in Miami that night was certainly provocative, and entirely in the insurrectionary spirit of The Doors’
music and message. The charges against him were largely an opportunity for grandstanding by ambitious politicians
- not to mention an affront to free speech and a massive waste of time and taxpayer dollars. As Ann Woolner of the
Albany Times-Union wrote recently, “Morrison’s case bore all the signs of a political prosecution, a rebuke from the
cultural right to punish a symbol of Dionysian rebellion.”

If the State of Florida and the City of Miami want to make amends for the travesty of Jim Morrison’s arrest and
prosecution forty years after the fact, an apology would be more appropriate – and expunging the whole sorry
matter from the record. And how about a promise to stop letting culture-war hysteria trump our First Amendment
rights? Freedom of Speech must be held sacred, especially in these reactionary times.

Love,

The Doors
The Morrison Family

Sound Tribe Sector 9 :: 09.10.10-09.11.10 :: Red Rocks Amphitheatre :: Morrison, CO

STS9 returned to Red Rocks Amphitheatre for two nights of electronica dance music mixed with good ole fashion rock-n-roll. The crowd showed up early and stayed late to support the band, who shared the bill with Thievery Corporation and Ghostland Observatory.

STS9 seemed to scale back their light show for the Red Rocks run of concerts compared to years past. The lights, however, were still a driving force behind the band, and perhaps their new technology doesn’t require as many lighting rigs. The crowd was young and full of life, and seemed to hint that STS9 could be the future of American popular music. With two sold out nights at Red Rocks, it seems that Sound Tribe Sector 9 is really gaining momentum in mainstream circles. As one fan said to me, they are the next Dave Matthews Band of the electronica scene.

Gov’t Mule :: 09.04.10 :: Red Rocks Amphitheatre :: Morrison, CO

Gov’t Mule cranked their amps up to 11 at Red Rocks at the band’s annual end of summer concert, where they were joined by The Avett Brothers and Truth & Salvage Co.. Mule lead singer, guitarist and bandleader Warren Haynes is a master at the guitar, having played with the Allman Brothers Band, The Dead, David Allan Coe and many more talented musicians, not to mention the dozens if not hundreds of musicians he has jammed with over the years. Along with Haynes was the rock solid Matt Abts behind the drum kit, Danny Louis on keyboard and even guitar for a few songs, and new bass player Jorgen Carlsson throwing down at Red Rocks. The first set started out rocking but settled into a mellow groove, if that’s possible for Gov’t Mule. When Haynes came out for the second set, he said, “This is the rock ‘n’ roll portion of the show,” as his guitar cut through the thin Rocky Mountain; a hypnotic sound you can close your eyes and really drift off to. Special guest Eric Krasno (Soulive, Lettuce) added his guitar chops in this set much to the delight of the Colorado crowd.

Gov’t Mule is heading to Oakland for a spooky Halloween show on October 30th, and before that making a stop in Las Vegas with their friends Widespread Panic for an intimate night of music at the Hard Rock’s The Joint on October 23rd .

Setlist
Set I: Railroad Boy > Gameface with Mountain Jam Tease, Patchwork Quilt, Child Of The Earth, Frozen Fear > D’yer Mak’er > Frozen Fear, Kind Of Bird, I’d Rather Go Blind, Soulshine with Gospel Intro, Broke Down On The Brazos

Primus & Gogol Bordello | Red Rocks | Pics

Words & Images by: Mike Hardaker

Primus/Gogol Bordello :: 08.12.10 :: Red Rocks Amphitheatre :: Morrison, CO

Gogol Bordello and Primus returned to Red Rocks Amphitheatre earlier this month. Primus features Les Claypool (bass, vocals), Larry LaLonde (guitar) and multi-talented drummer Jay Lane, who left touring with the latest Grateful Dead act, Furthur, to join Primus on the road in 2010. Primus formed in Northern California, with musical influences like Pink Floyd and Frank Zappa. There musical style is hard to define, and Primus has been referred to as psychedelic polka, thrash-funk, alternative rock, and much more.

Gogol Bordello’s eight band members hail from across the globe. The band formed in 1999 on NYC’s lower east side, and is known for theatrical stage shows and catchy polka sounding punk songs. Much of Gogol Bordellos sound hails from Gypsy music, and features violins, accordions, guitars, drums and other noisemakers. The last time Gogol Bordello played at Red Rocks Amphitheatre the band sat around with Manu Chao and played music outside of Red Rocks Park until the sun came up in true gypsy style.

Primus Setlist
Pudding Time, In The Flesh (Pink Floyd cover), Here Come The Bastards, Behind My Camel (Police cover), Groundhog’s Day, Those Damn Blue Collar Tweekers, Golden Boy, American Life, Big In Japan (Tom Waits cover w/ Gogol Bordello), Over The Falls, Drum & Whamola Jam, Eleven, Jerry Was A Race Car Driver, Over The Electric Grapevine, Harold of the Rocks. Rodrigo y Gabriela | Red Rocks Pics/Video

Words & Images by: Mike Hardaker

Rodrigo y Gabriela :: 08.20.10 :: Red Rocks Amphitheatre :: Morrison, CO

Rodrigo y Gabriela were joined by special guests Shenkar, Al Di Meola and Zach de la Rocha for their concert at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. The duo brought their amazing live acoustic show much to the delight of the nearly sold out crowd, combining classical flamenco music with modern day punk rock and metal elements.

Rodrigo and Gabriela first met while living in Mexico City playing in the thrash metal band Tierra Acida. Growing frustrated with the limited music scene in their hometown the two moved to Dublin, Ireland, where then gained instant fame playing in local pubs and music festivals.

The duo has released six albums to date, and their most recent, 11:11, catapulted the band into the American mainstream music by covering songs from artist such as, Carlos Santana, Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd. With the addition of Shenkar from India, the sounds took on the feel of another world, or at the very least, another galaxy. Al Di Meola showed the crowd the possibilities of a string instrument, blending jazz-fusion with Latin guitar. The traveling guitar player, or gypsy as some call him, just played a gig in Italy and will be heading to Hungary after Red Rocks. It was an honor to be able to see this legend live and in concert. Zach de la Rocha, frontman for Rage Against The Machine, inspired people to talk about SB 1070 in Arizona and warned of the chances of something similar coming to Colorado.

Intel to Acquire McAfee

News Highlights:

  • Purchase of all of McAfee’s common stock for $48 per share in cash, valuing the deal at approximately $7.68 billion. McAfee will operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary, reporting into Intel’s Software and Services Group.
  • Acquisition enables a combination of security software and hardware from one company to ultimately better protect consumers, corporations and governments as billions of devices – and the server and cloud networks that manage them – go online.
  • Intel elevates focus on security on par with energy-efficient performance and connectivity. The acquisition augments Intel’s mobile wireless strategy, helping to better assure customer and consumer security concerns as these billions of devices connect.
  • Intel has made a number of software-related acquisitions of leaders in their respective industries that also rely on great silicon, including Wind River, Havok and now McAfee.

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Aug. 19, 2010 – Intel Corporation has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire McAfee, Inc., through the purchase of all of the company’s common stock at $48 per share in cash, for approximately $7.68 billion. Both boards of directors have unanimously approved the deal, which is expected to close after McAfee shareholder approval, regulatory clearances and other customary conditions specified in the agreement.

The acquisition reflects that security is now a fundamental component of online computing. Today’s security approach does not fully address the billions of new Internet-ready devices connecting, including mobile and wireless devices, TVs, cars, medical devices and ATM machines as well as the accompanying surge in cyber threats. Providing protection to a diverse online world requires a fundamentally new approach involving software, hardware and services.

Inside Intel, the company has elevated the priority of security to be on par with its strategic focus areas in energy-efficient performance and Internet connectivity.

McAfee, which has enjoyed double-digit, year-over-year growth and nearly 80 percent gross margins last year, will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of Intel, reporting into Intel’s Software and Services Group. The group is managed by Renée James, Intel senior vice president, and general manager of the group.

“With the rapid expansion of growth across a vast array of Internet-connected devices, more and more of the elements of our lives have moved online,” said Paul Otellini, Intel president and CEO. “In the past, energy-efficient performance and connectivity have defined computing requirements. Looking forward, security will join those as a third pillar of what people demand from all computing experiences.

“The addition of McAfee products and technologies into the Intel computing portfolio brings us incredibly talented people with a track record of delivering security innovations, products and services that the industry and consumers trust to make connecting to the Internet safer and more secure,” Otellini added.

“Hardware-enhanced security will lead to breakthroughs in effectively countering the increasingly sophisticated threats of today and tomorrow,” said James. “This acquisition is consistent with our software and services strategy to deliver an outstanding computing experience in fast-growing business areas, especially around the move to wireless mobility.”

“McAfee is the next step in this strategy, and the right security partner for us,” she added. “Our current work together has impressive prospects, and we look forward to introducing a product from our strategic partnership next year.”

“The cyber threat landscape has changed dramatically over the past few years, with millions of new threats appearing every month,” said Dave DeWalt, president and CEO of McAfee. “We believe this acquisition will result in our ability to deliver a safer, more secure and trusted Internet-enabled device experience.”

McAfee, based in Santa Clara and founded in 1987, is the world’s largest dedicated security technology company with approximately $2 billion in revenue in 2009. With approximately 6,100 employees, McAfee’s products and technologies deliver secure solutions and services to consumers, enterprises and governments around the world and include a strong sales force that works with a variety of customers.

The company has a suite of software-related security solutions, including end-point and networking products and services that are focused on helping to ensure Internet-connected devices and networks are protected from malicious content, phony requests and unsecured transactions and communications. Among others, products include McAfee Total Protection™, McAfee Antivirus, McAfee Internet Security, McAfee Firewall, McAfee IPS as well as an expanding line of products targeting mobile devices such as smartphones.

Intel has made a series of recent and successful software acquisitions to pursue a deliberate strategy focused on leading companies in their industry delivering software that takes advantage of silicon. These include gaming, visual computing, embedded device and machine software and now security.

Home to two of the most innovative labs and research in the high-tech industry, Intel and McAfee will also jointly explore future product concepts to further strengthen security in the cloud network and myriad of computers and devices people use in their everyday lives.

On a GAAP basis, Intel expects the combination to be slightly dilutive to earnings in the first year of operations and approximately flat in the second year. On a non-GAAP basis, excluding a one-time write down of deferred revenue when the transaction closes and amortization of acquired intangibles, Intel expects the combination to be slightly accretive in the first year and improve beyond that.

Intel was advised by Goldman Sachs & Co. and Morrison & Foerster LLP. McAfee was advised by Morgan Stanley & Co. Inc. and Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, P.C.

String Cheese Incident | Red Rocks, CO | Photos

The String Cheese Incident by Brian Spady

It had been over a year since String Cheese Incident last assembled on a stage together. Each time they take a break these days it puts a lingering question mark in their fans’ minds but cheekily opening their 3-night Red Rocks run with a tune entitled “Can’t Stop Now” announced that there’s more to this story yet to be told. An encore opening night of “Brand New Start” further fueled the notion that SCI is entering a new phase, rejuvenated and excited by their many outside projects, and surely happy to see the smiling, gently undulating multitudes covering the hillside in front of them.

For whatever else one can say about an “Incident,” there’s no missing the warmth, camaraderie, and in-the-moment engagement of the folks on and off the stage. And the vibe had to be positively tactile revisiting fan faves like “How Mountain Girls Can Love,” “Rollover” and “Ms Brown’s Teahouse,” not to mention SCI takes on Kansas’ “Carry On Wayward Son,” Dylan’s “The Mighty Quinn” and Joe Walsh’s “Rocky Mountain Way.”

What follows is a glimpse into the fun and fine music that transpired in the Rockies this past weekend as folks await the next big String Cheese run at Horning’s Hideout, July 30-August 1. (Dennis Cook)
