ISLAMABAD – Legislators from opposition and treasury benches in the National Assembly Monday criticised the Punjab Chief Minister for his statement regarding terrorism in the province and demanded to make apology from the people.
Ameer Muqam from PML-Q said that the Pakistan Army and other law enforcement agencies were fighting against terrorism and in such circumstances the statement of Shehbaz Sharrif has confused the people. He should make an apology, Muqam asserted.
MNA Nabeel Gabol on the point of order said that after the statement of CM Punjab, other provinces were considering themselves weak against terrorism. “PML-N is not a party of a province but from the statement of the CM it seems that PML-N is a party of Punjab”, Gabol said. He also urged the Chairman National Assembly Riaz Hussain Pirzada to allow the House to discuss the matter.
Legislator Akhunzada Chattan said that in his area, they were in war against terrorism and those who say that Punjab is a name of Pakistan. In these circumstances such statements may become a cause of defeat for us”, Chattan added. He also demanded of the CM Punjab to make apology.
However, MNA from PML-N Hamza Shehbaz Sharrif said that Punjab has been on frontline to support the terror-hit areas and the Punjab government has provided medical facilities to the IDPs of Swat and Malakand. He added that when the House passed a resolution against terrorism, PML-N took stand with other political parties. He also criticised the government for delaying constitutional reform package.
Replying to the point of order, Minister for Law and Justice Babar Awan said that the Constitutional Reforms Committee has done most of its job. He said that the committee is meeting regularly to finish its task at the earliest.
Later, responding to a calling attention notice, Minister of State for Finance Hina Rabbani Khar said that the government was very serious in tackling the problem of rising inflation. She acknowledged that the inflation has risen to thirteen percent but pointed out that its rate was less last month as compared to January this year.
She said that salaries of the Armed Forces personnel have been doubled and those of the government employees would be increased in the light of the report of the Pay and Pension Commission, likely to be presented to the government this month. Abdul Rashid Godil, Shagufta Sadiq and others moved the call attention notice.
Responding to another call attention notice, Minister for Sports Ejaz Hussain Jakhrani said that Executive Committee of Pakistan Hockey Federation is meeting to go into the causes behind poor performance of the National Hockey team in the recently concluded world cup hockey tournament.
The Minister said that initially the Hockey Federation has maintained that the bad performance was because of poor backup support, lack of physical fitness and injuries to some key players.
Jakhrani said that he would be meeting players tomorrow to hear from them about the causes of the debacle. Muhammad Hanif Abbasi, Nuzhat Sadiq and others moved the call attention notice.
To a point of order raised by MNA Shiekh Waqas Akram regarding corruption in a housing society, the Law Minister said that he would call a report from Chief Commissioner Islamabad about the alleged wrongdoings in National Assembly Employees Cooperative Housing Society.
Chairperson Standing Committee on Defence Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho presented the report of the committee on the Bill to provide for the establishment of the National Defence University in Islamabad.
Earlier, during the question hour, Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Syed Naveed Qamar told the House that twenty-two oil and gas discoveries were made during the last two years.
He added that eighteen discoveries are under appraisal while four have been appraised having reserves of three to seven million barrels of oil and 404 billion cubic feet of gas. He said the government has granted 126 exploration licenses to different companies.
Responding to a supplementary question by leader of the opposition Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Minister for Petroleum said the government wants to reform gas pricing mechanism to provide relief to both consumers and the gas companies.
Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, who is also Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee, said that the Committee has directed both Sui Northern Gas and Sui Southern Gas to bring down the number of slabs for consumers from the existing seven to three.
To another question Syed Naveed Qamar said that Sindh has coal reserves of 184 billion tons in Thar, Badin, Sonda-Jherik and Lakhra Coal Fields.

Sh Rashid attacked; three killed
SHAHID RAO & ISRAR AHMED
RAWALPINDI – President Awami Muslim League (AML) Sheikh Rashid Ahmad escaped an attempt on life while his three bodyguards were killed when four assailants carrying sophisticated weapons attacked his election office here on Monday.
Former minister and a candidate for NA-55 by-election Sheikh Rashid received minor injuries on his leg when he fell down at the time of the attack. Two other political workers also sustained injuries in this deadly incident.
Some eyewitnesses informed TheNation that four armed assailants attacked Sheikh Rashid when he was leaving his election office situated in Khayban-e-Sir Syed to attend a public meeting. The deceased were identified as Sheikh Anwar alias Anwari, Irshad alias Shada and Javed, while the injured included Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, Abbas and Muhammad Hassan. The windowpanes of the Land Cruiser of Sh Rashid were also broken in the attack. The bodies of the deceased and the injured were shifted to DHQ and Holy Family Hospitals for autopsy and medical treatment.
Acting MS DHQ Ijaz Suhail, while talking to TheNation, told that they had received two dead bodies while Sheikh Rashid Ahmed sustained minor injuries on his leg. When asked whether or not these were bullet injuries, the MS replied Sheikh fell down at the time of firing and got injuries on his leg. “However, his condition is stable now,” he added.
After the incident, a heavy contingent of police cordoned off Lal Haveli, residence of Rashid, to avoid any untoward incident. Police also established pickets at all the entry and exit points of the city to arrest the attackers.
The news of gruesome attack on Sh Rashid spread like jungle fire as hundreds of enraged workers of AML (male, female and even children) without caring the torrential rain rushed towards the District Headquarter Hospitals (DHQ) and gathered outside Emergency Department. They condemned the attack.
They held PML-N candidate for NA-55 by-poll, Malik Shakil Awan, and PML-N leadership responsible for the bloodiest attack on Sh Rashid.
The enraged workers of AML also chanted slogans in favour of Rashid and against PML-N Quaid Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif, Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and PML-N MNA Muhammad Hanif Abbasi.
The most echoed slogan chanted by AML workers was simple: “Sheikh your devotees are countless.” There was a chaotic situation outside and within Emergency Department of DHQ as scores of AML workers were trying to enter the room where Sh Rashid was admitted.
However, Nazim Rawal Town, Sheikh Rashid Shafique, and former MPA Raja Rashid Hafeez requested the furious AML workers to calm down as their leader was out of danger. They also conveyed a message of Rashid to the workers to stay cool and not damage public property.
Meanwhile, PML-Q Secretary General Mushahid Hussain Sayed, former provincial law minister Muhammad Basharat Raja, Muhammad Nasir Raja, PTI Chief Media Advisor Syed Zahid Hussain Kazmi, PTI candidate for NA-55 by-poll Ijaz Khan Jazi, PPP city President Malik Aamer Fida Pracha and former District Naib Nazim Muhammad Afzal Khokhar also visited the hospital and inquired about the health of Sheikh Rashid.
While talking to media persons, Raja Basharat vehemently condemned the gruesome attack on former federal minister and also leashed out Punjab government for not providing adequate security to the AML President. He said all the circumstances were in favour of Rashid as people of Rawalpindi were full supporting him. He alleged that after infamy defeat of N-league candidate in NA-21, Mansehra, the PML-N leadership had realised that its candidate would also fail in NA-55, therefore they engineered an attack on most favourite Rashid to vanish him from political scene.
Media Advisor to PTI Chief Syed Zahid Hussain Kazmi also denounced the sorrowful incident saying, “Punjab government, despite several request, has failed to provide security to the candidates of by-poll.” He said that provincial government only provided police escort to its candidate Malik Shakil Awan and it was condemnable. He informed that PTI Chairman Imran Khan had postponed the inauguration of an election office of Ijaz Khan Jazi due to the gory incident, which was to be done that day (Monday).
The infuriated workers of AML also took out a protest rally at Fawara Chowk and blocked the road by burning tyres. They chanted slogans against Punjab government. All the business activities in Raja Bazaar and its adjoining Bazaars were suspended.
An FIR has been lodged with Police Station Pirwadhai. The sources informed that SHO of the police station concerned went District Headquarter Hospital and took application from Sh Rashid, besides recording his statement. The FIR was registered under sections 302, 324 and 7-Anti Terrorism Act (2005) and 34.
