RIM’s PlayBook Offers Multitasking and BlackBerry Tethering
Research In Motion used the Consumer Electronics Show to reveal a little more about the PlayBook, its 7-inch tablet aimed at both an enterprise and consumer audience. In contrast to the Apple iPad and growing legions of Android-based tablets, RIM made the decision to build its own proprietary operating system for the device. Hardware-wise, the PlayBook includes front- and rear-facing cameras for video conferencing, and a dual-core processor for running multiple apps simultaneously. Business users may be attracted to the PlayBook’s ability to tether with their BlackBerry. RIM let eWEEK fiddle with the PlayBook for a few minutes at CES, and the experience was largely a smooth one. The device seems capable of operating a handful of apps and games simultaneously with little slowdown, while loading Websites quickly (with Adobe Flash 10.1 support). RIM is currently tweaking the device’s battery life to provide what executives describe as a full day’s worth of use. The question now is whether third-party app developers—and consumers—will embrace the platform. – …

Windows Phone 7 Will Lack Flash, Multitasking, CDMA at Launch
Windows Phone 7 represents Microsoft’s next best hope for regaining its market share in the highly competitive smartphone space, after several quarters of decline in the face of fierce competition from the likes of the Apple iPhone and Google Android. Windows Phone 7 takes a different approach than those platforms, consolidating its Web apps and content into a series of subject-specific "Hubs" such as "Office" and "People." Microsoft will launch Windows Phone 7 during an Oct. 11 event in New York City. Once the first smartphones with Windows Phone 7 hit the street in coming weeks, users will immediately notice the platform lacks some key features. Among them: Adobe Flash support, a cut-and-paste function, tethering and multitasking. Microsoft has promised that some of these will come later. Along with those, however, Microsoft has also cut some regularly complaint-worthy features that had lingered in its Mobile versions: With the new, user-friendly touch interface, say hello to no more stylus. Microsoft hopes that, certain lacking features aside, users will attach to the early version of Windows Phone 7 and allow the company to again make headway in the mobile space. – …
