Sudhir Mishra is miffed. The filmmaker is losing his mind with the oft repeated buzz that his discovery Chitrangada Singh is his muse. “I don’t like these words. My name is not Maqbool Fida Husain. My name is Sudhir Mishra and I am a film director (not a painter who takes inspirations from a muse). [...]

Jisan Valley Rock Festival:: 07.29.10-08.01.10 :: Jisan Valley Ski
Resort :: Icheon, South
Korea
Crash :: JVRF 2010 |
Having lived in New Orleans for the past seven years, I didn’t realize how spoiled I was
with live music until I moved
to South Korea this past March. Due to the location of the town that I’m teaching in,
I’ve only seen three live bands
in the past five months! So, I was desperately looking forward to this year’s Jisan
Valley Rock Festival,
which takes place on the Jisan Valley Ski Resort grounds, just 40 minutes south of Seoul
in Icheon. Getting there, for
me, involved a three-and-a-half hour train ride, an hour subway ride, and a final hour-
long bus ride. Getting the
right information, in English, about where, when and how to get to the fest was slightly
frustrating. A far cry from
waking up in my own bed and walking a few blocks to Voodoo Music Experience or Jazz Fest
in New Orleans.
Jisan Valley Rock Fest lasts for three days, where you can camp or stay at one of the
local jimjibangs (saunas with
with sleeping quarters). This year’s line up boasted such international acts such as
Belle & Sebastian, Massive Attack, Corinne Bailey Rae,
Muse and New
Orleans’ own
Mute Math.
Some local
acts I was looking forward to seeing were Toe (Japanese progressive rock),
Matzka (Taiwanese
roots reggae), and The Moonshiners (Korean rockabilly), along with Seoul
Electric Sound, Mate, Art of
Parties, Galaxy Express and Taru.
A band that really blew my mind was a Korean thrash metal band called Crash. Little
did I know how
legendary they were. Getting their start in the early 90s, they were the first band here
to inspire moshing and stage
diving, which there was plenty of at this performance. Korean metal is alive and well.
The rock stages ended their
night at 9:30 pm but the entertainment didn’t stop there. It spilled over to the
Electronic Stage, where there were
DJs spinning until 4 am every morning. Another late night option was the fire poi
demonstration area accompanied
by a drum circle, or if you wanted to get down and dirty, another DJ tent had foam spewing
down on you until the
break of dawn.
Food, Drink & Vendors
The food and drink venders were open during all hours the festival operated. Options
included New York hot dogs,
a taco/burrito stand, hamburgers, toasted sandwiches, slow smoked meats, and fresh grilled
chicken boti and
samosas, along with traditional Korean foods like cold kimchee noodle soup, tteokbokki
(rice cakes, meat and
veggies in a red pepper sauce), dried squid, spicy ramon, and beondegi (boiled silk
worms). Yes, I have tried
beondegi, and though it may be high in protein I will never venture that way again.
There was only one beer
option, which was Miller Genuine Draft, though there were plenty of cocktail stands. The
most popular was Vinyl,
which is known for making their drinks in plastic bags. My personal favorite was the
fresh lime margaritas and mint
mojitos from Lazy Heaven. Limes are impossible to find here so to have such a delicacy
was worth every cent of the
5,000 won.
The Indian Village was surrounded by vendors and food stalls. There was an Orange amp
tent, a vintage dress store,
a CD tent, Calvin Klein underwear (really), and a Cosmopolitan Tent, where you could get
makeovers or do your own
touchups. There was even tent full of exercise bikes where they provided you with an iPod
to use.
A Few Things That Might Need Explaining
Korean couples dressing the same: If you’re in love, you match your clothing to
the T. Same T-shirt,
jeans, flip-flops and yes, even knickers. Most underwear stores have male/female models
wearing undies made
from the same material.
The Top 4 Questions Koreans Ask Foreigners: How old are you? Are you married?
What’s your blood
type? and What is your job? This still baffles me as much as it is entertaining.
Jisan Rock Fest is only in its second year, capturing an attendance of roughly 30,000.
For my first festival far, far
away from home it was delightful. Who wouldn’t want to be tucked away in the mountains
of Asia listening to some
of the best bands in the world for a weekend?

Kate Hudson has been spotted kissing Muse rocker Matt Bellamy in public. The two had an early dinner at the Spotted Pig and were seen kissing between courses. “They were making out, rubbing each other”s hands. LATEST STARS, BIG COMEBACKS, AND PROMISING NAMES AT SZIGET FESTIVAL
2010
SzigetFestival 2009 by Walter |
Sziget Festival has announced the first names that include current stars, big comebacks and great
promises. Among
the confirmed names is Muse, one of the world’s most popular rock bands, after three sold out concerts at
Wembley stadium and a wildly successful world tour they will be performing on the main stage at Sziget. Very few
bands have managed as outsiders to infiltrate the incredibly exclusive Madchester rock community. The Gallagher
brothers’ favourite band Kasabian is just one such group, who will bring their latest album – voted “Album of the
Year” both by NME and Q magazines – West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum to Sziget.
Papa Roach, who is
always in training, hence always able to make great leaps will be performing his spectacular rock work out – which
has expanded in 2009 to include his fifth album, Metamorphosis – on the Sziget main stage this year.
Sziget is
offering a real treat to ska fanatics: The Specials, who celebrated their 30th anniversary with a few exclusive concerts in
2009, will be paying Sziget a visit. This summer the Juno award winning Canadian rock band, Billy Talent will be giving a concert
at Sziget. This year Damon Albarn‘s dream factory will be representing with its
most successful product to date, the Gorillaz Sound System DJ set.
Enter Shikari, will be
holding a power demonstration at the 18th Sziget festival too. And last, but not least Infected Mushroom is preparing an
assault on all the senses with their concert at Sziget. The formation was recently named by DJ Mag, the
world’s number one DJ info-port, as the world’s best psy-trance production of all time.
Among the newly discovered performers will be a dozen names that recall the biggest parties in Sziget history.
During its career Iron
Maiden has recorded the most important heavy metal albums, they have the most dedicated fan base and
are one of the most respected metal bands ever. At Sziget this year they will not only play old favourites, but also
present their new album, The Final Frontier. The electro-pop formation Faithless has a huge fan base in
Hungary, and so far have always put on sold out shows at Sziget, and this year is their chance to prove that they’ve
still got it. Also returning after last year’s success is the Canadian Danko Jones. The Hives, one of the most popular
Swedish rock bands are repeat customers at Sziget festival. The audiences have also had the pleasure of The
Toy Dolls, the band lead by singer-guitarist Michael Algar, aka Olga. After their hugely successful
concert on the main stage, the Spanish Ska-P are organizing an international ska convention at Sziget.
Germany’s best reggae artist of Jamaican roots, Tilmann Otto, aka Gentleman will be bringing his
latest studio album Diversity to Sziget this year. The other end will also be there, represented by Bad Religion, perhaps the only
band in the world that can boast a singer who is a doctor in his spare time.
Sziget festival will also host a number of bands who are perhaps not so familiar to the ear, but have a good chance
of becoming the favourites of the future. The Cribs, for example, will be arriving to Sziget festival on top form after the massive
critical and commercial success of their album, Ignore the Ignorant. During Gwar‘s incomparable heavy metal
enhanced visual orgy at Sziget, festival goers might run into George W. Bush or even Michael Jackson, or they can
follow the magical adventures of Phallus in Wonderland presented by the world’s craziest metal band.
A complete list of confirmed artists is available at sziget.hu.

The indie kid’s guide to classical
Chopin has made it on to Radio 1, courtesy of Muse’s latest hit United States of Eurasia. But don’t stop there,
kids: here’s where you and your iPod should venture next
Kids up and down the country are tuning in to Radio 1 and scratching their heads. What’s that weird, long piano section doing at the end of Muse’s new Bohemian Rhapsody-esque single, United States of Eurasia. Isn’t that (whisper it) . . . classical music? Being played on the nation’s favourite youth station? That’s right, kids, it’s Chopin’s Nocturne in E-flat major, Op 9 No 2 to be precise. So now, for all you puzzled young ‘uns out there, here’s how to get in to that classical music vibe . . .
How do you listen?
What you need to do is close the curtains, take your clothes off, lie face down with your teeth sunk deep into the carpet. Then get your butler to sprinkle your buttocks with rose petals and put on the 16-plus hours of Wagner’s operatic tetralogy, The Ring, before he retreats, locking the door on you, until the bloody ordeal is over. Not really: what you need is peace, quiet and concentration.
What am I supposed to be listening for?
Radio 3 helps here. It offers two great entry points to classical music. On Discovering Music (Sunday teatime), leading conductors take you passage by passage through a whole work, explaining what the composer was trying to achieve and what you might enjoy. In Building a Library (Saturday mornings), a critic anatomises different recordings of the same work in a manner that switches between the hilariously pernickety and the genuinely instructive – you can even download it as a weekly podcast.
What should I avoid?
For the time being, avoid anything labelled Salford Toccata by Harrison Birtwistle, explosante fixe . . . by Pierre Boulez, Helikopter-Streichquartett by Karlheinz Stockhausen. Stuff by Alban Berg, Arnold Schoenberg and Olivier Messiaen might well have you calling 999 and shouting hysterically “Fire in the pet shop! Fire in the pet shop!”
What should I try?
Download Thomas Tallis’s Spem in Alium and, if you have functioning ears, prepare to weep. It is a 10-plus minute, 40-part motet written in the late 16th century: a wall of sound more overwhelming than anything in Phil Spector’s philosophy.
Liked that. Now what?
David Mellor is, as we know, wrong about everything, but the name of his Classic FM show, “If you liked that, you’ll like this”, is helpful here. If you liked the Chopin on Muse’s single, then listen to some more Chopin music – say Martha Argerich’s 1965 concert of his sonatas, mazurkas and nocturnes. Or try the andantino from Schubert’s sonata in A – it’s what Isaiah Berlin insisted be played at his funeral. If you like Roy Orbison, Terence Trent d’Arby or – though you really shouldn’t – James Morrison, then you might well like lieder. Lieder is German for songs – helpfully as short as anything on Chris Moyles’s playlist, but more heartfelt than anything that comes from his mouth. Try some lieder cycles: Schubert’s Winterreise or Schumann’s Dichterliebe will shatter your heart. If you like Kraftwerk, you’ll probably dig minimalist music: try Steve Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians or his Different Trains.
Any chance I’ve heard any of this classical stuff before?
Remember Torvill and Dean hurling each other across the ice? Perhaps you weren’t even a twinkle in your dad’s eye then, but if you were, you might enjoy realising that that stuff they were skating to was Ravel’s Bolero and you’d get a kick listening to it properly. And then there was Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries used when Robert Duvall napalmed Vietnam.
Symphonies – they go on and freaking on. Help me over this experiential hump.
Don’t try (yet) the forbiddingly sculptured hours of Bruckner’s symphonies. Plump instead for Beethoven. You’ll know the opening to his fifth (“Da-Da-Da-Dah”) but stick around for its second movement which, if you have heartstrings, will pluck them mercilessly. If you don’t find the first movement of his sixth the perfect accompaniment to a summer walk in the country, then look into my eyes as I give you the frowning of a lifetime. For those of you whose attention spans have been ruined by daytime telly, Haydn symphonies (try his No 94th, the so-called”Surprise”) are often obligingly short.
Five downloads to getyou started
Schubert: the Trout Quintet
Bach: Brandenburg Concertos
Mozart: Clarinet Concerto
Beethoven: Symphony No 9
Puccini: Madame Butterfly
