Wanda Jackson: New Jack White Produced LP

THE QUEEN OF ROCK UNVEILS HER NEW ALBUM JANUARY 25

Wanda Jackson

Third Man and Nonesuch Records announce the release of the new album from Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Wanda Jackson. The Party
Ain’t Over
, produced by her friend Jack White, will be out January 25, 2011.

The two teamed up last year to record a 45rpm single for White’s Third Man Records. The vinyl and iTunes release, a
cover of Amy Winehouse‘s “You Know
I’m No Good” b/w “Shakin All Over” was a big success and the pair hatched a plan to record a full-length album.

The Party Ain’t Over was recorded in Nashville at White’s studio, where he brought together a formidable
band, including himself, Jack Lawrence (The Dead Weather/Raconteurs), Carl Broemel (My
Morning Jacket), Patrick Keeler (Raconteurs), Ashley Monroe, Jackson Smith and
Karen Elson, to name a few, and hand picked the songs – 11 tracks dating in origin from the early 1900′s
to 2007. The result: a retro modern collection of music that showcases Wanda, now in her seventh decade and
sounding as wickedly charismatic as ever.

Check out this review of Wanda Jackson’s performance at
the Goose On The Lake Festival by JamBase Associate Editor Dennis Cook.

Tracklist

1. Shakin All Over

2. Rip It Up
3. Busted

4. Rum and Coca-Cola

5. Thunder on the Mountain

6. You Know I’m No Good
7. Like A Baby
8. Nervous Breakdown

9. Dust on the Bible

Sat Eye Candy: Leo Kottke

HAPPY FREAKIN’ BIRTHDAY, FLEET FINGERS!

There’s not a guitarist worth their salt today that hasn’t been touched in some way by Leo Kottke. Even if not directly influenced by his dazzling approach and command of acoustic guitar, his work has seeped into the infrastructure of all guitar playing since his landmark debut 6- and 12 – String Guitar arrived in 1969. Watch him and the strength in his hands and fevered focus in his eyes make the experience of a dude sitting in a chair picking really bloody riveting, not to mention one’s natural disbelief that one guy is making all that sound by himself with a single instrument. Kottke is also an expert showman and his often bizarre between song rambles and highly unique vocal selections add further layers of cool curiosity to this pro’s pro. Leo Kottke turns 65 today and we hope he gets extra icing on his cake. (Dennis Cook)

This quicksilver pairing seems as fine a place to jump off as one might find.

One of Kottke’s best vocal albums is 1990′s My Father’s Face, which contains this stony lil’ morning jewel full of odd wisdom and dream fragments.

Ancient and modern streams converge in Kottke’s compositions. To wit, this mingling of Renaissance and Nashville vibes in this clip from the Montreux Jazz Festival in 1977.

The fluidity and bounce to his 12-string playing is captured nicely in this 1973 BBC clip.

Another sprightly fave from his vocal arsenal.

It’s easy to understand how Kottke and Phish’s Mike Gordon became pals and collaborators after one watches curious experiments like this one. And yes, we tried to find high quality video of Mike & Leo together but it’s all pretty sub-par. Sorry, kids.

Breathtaking kinda covers it with this selection.

Kottke’s storytelling and easy laughter are essential ingredients to his enduring live success. This tale has been part of his repertoire for ages and it never gets old.

We end with Leo in Germany in the late 70s performing “Up Tempo,” “Hear The Wind Howl” and “Busted Bicycle.”

Infamous Stringdusters and Trampled By Turtles Tour

TWO PREMIERE NEXT GENERATION STRING OUTFITS COLLIDE

“The Infamous Stringdusters epitomizes the ethic of today’s young ‘new-grass’ artists. Their instrumental virtuosity is front and center, but it’s paired with an insouciant curiosity for everything from shiny Nashville harmonies to jam-band wonkery.” – LA Times

“Shooting sparks in the face of folk traditionalism; Trampled by Turtles approaches the banjo and mandolin with a level of brash recklessness hardly heard since the now-mythical reign of Uncle Tupelo. Bill Monroe and Joe Strummer would both be proud.” – SF Bay Guardian

The definition of bluegrass is being challenged. Ever since the Oh Brother bubble burst, string-bands have developed into the mainstream redefining “bluegrass” and shifting the limiting paradigm of acoustic instruments. Divergent string-band worlds collide as thrash-grassers Trampled by Turtles and virtuosic-jammers The Infamous Stringdusters team up to bring you the Fly Palomino Tour in November.

Jerry Douglas: Tut Taylor Tribute Record

A TRIBUTE TO THE DOBRO LEGEND

Southern Filibuster: A Tribute to Tut Taylor

There isn’t a Dobro player alive who doesn’t owe Tut Taylor. Taylor is a towering figure in the world of acoustic music, championed for his flat-picking mastery by generations of fellow musicians and connoisseurs of rural American music.

One of Taylor’s lifelong devotees is Jerry
Douglas
, perhaps the most celebrated Dobro player in the world for more than 30 years. Douglas honors his inspiration with Southern Filibuster: A Tribute to Tut
Taylor
(released July 13 on E1 Music).

For this labor of love, Douglas assembled 14 of the world’s greatest Dobro players to interpret compositions penned
by Taylor. He also enlisted Nashville’s finest backing musicians for the recording including Ronnie
McCoury
(mandolin), Jason Carter (fiddle), Tim O’Brien (mandolin), Russ
Barenberg
(guitar), Barry Bales (bass), Fred Carpenter (fiddle), Stuart Duncan
(fiddle), Chris Jones (guitar), Mike Compton (mandolin), Dennis Crouch (bass),
Bryan Sutton (guitar), and Mike Bub (bass).

All of the proceeds from Southern Filibuster
go directly to Taylor. And even best of all, they didn’t tell Taylor about the project until it was a wrap, giving him
one of the nicest surprises of his 86 years.

Track Listing

1. “Southern Filibuster” – Jerry Douglas
2. “Swampwater” – Billy Cardine
3. “Dobro Country” – Michael Witcher

importantly, the entire album is available for free online at the band’s website Zoogma.net.

Conan O’Brien: Live Album & Spoken Word

OUT NOW ON THIRD MAN RECORDS

Conan O’ Brien

Third Man Records presents a new release from the one and only Conan O’Brien recorded in Nashville at
the Third Man studios this past June. The spoken word 7” entitled And They Call Me Mad? is
available now for pre-order in the Third Man Records online shop.

On June 10, 2010 Conan O’Brien visited Third Man Records for a surprise performance during his “Legally Prohibited
From Being Funny on Television Tour.” Over 1000 people turned up for the last minute show, but only 300 lucky
fans were able to get into the intimate Third Man live venue to see Conan and his band rip through an evening of old
school rockabilly and rock and roll tunes. This special set was recorded direct to analog tape in the Third Man Live 8
track booth, and released as a live album on Third Man Records. Jack White joined Conan for a duet on
the
Eddie Cochran classic “20 Flight Rock” to end the night.

During his stay in Nashville, Conan also recorded a 7” to be released as part of Third Man’s “Green Series” of Spoken
Word/Instructional records, which will also be made available digitally via iTunes early next week. And They Call
Me Mad?
is Conan’s hilarious improvised take on the Frankenstein legend. The B side of the single is an
interview with Conan conducted by friend Jack White.

Both the Conan O’Brien Live at Third Man live 12” LP and the Conan O’Brien And They Call Me Mad?
7” are available now at www.thirdmanrecords.com.

King Sunny Ade is global
groove royalty whose six-hour sets and butt-shaking beats are notorious from his native Nigeria to Nashville and
Nagasaki. And now the master is back with Baba Mo Tunde (IndigeDisc; September 28, 2010), his
first studio album in ten years, a pristine recording and double CD set that captures a vital musician in his prime
with
