Afghan civilians killed during NATO operation

NATO said Saturday one of its operations in Afghanistan has resulted in the deaths of two civilians and the wounding of another.
NATO service members discovered a dead woman and two wounded men who had been caught in the crossfire of a gunbattle to secure a compound in the village of Kalachen in Kandahar district, where the alliance force was looking for a Taliban commander. One of the men later died from his injuries.

NATO forces repel Taliban attack

Militants set off a car bomb and used rocket-propelled grenades to storm the entrance of an airbase outside Jalalabad, near the Pakistani border on Wednesday. The Taliban say six suicide bombers killed dozens of Afghan and foreign forces in the brazen daylight attack. But NATO spokesman Brigadier General Josef Blotz refutes that claim.

NATO: No change in Afghan strategy

30 Nato tankers torched in Capital


ISLAMABAD – More than 30 NATO vehicles, mostly oil tankers, were destroyed completely when terrorists attacked them near Islamabad Toll Plaza on late Tuesday night, while some five persons died and 11 others got injured in the attack.
Police sources informed that the death toll might rise. The sources revealed that a group of around 20 terrorists riding on two double cabins vehicles and motorbikes was involved in this incident.
According to details, the NATO containers were parked near an oil depot when some terrorists at first sprinkled oil and later opened indiscriminate fire on them. The sources revealed that owing to intense firing, trucks caught fire.
The incident took place at Sangjani area, a suburb area of the Federal Capital falling in the jurisdiction of Tarnol Police Station. Police sources informed that 63 NATO trucks loaded with goods and oil were parked on the site of attack. After the attack, thousands of litres of fuel spilled over the road.
Soon after the attack, heavy contingent of police rushed towards the site and launched a massive search operation in nearby areas.
The vehicles of Rescue 115 and CDA fire brigade rushed towards the spot and started rescue operation. Rescue operation was underway till filing of this report.

NATO to discuss troop reduction in Kosovo

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said in Brussels on Monday that the NATO defense ministers will discuss troop reduction in Kosovo. The meeting in scheduled for June 11-12.

10 NATO troops killed in Afghanistan

Ten servicemen with the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) for Afghanistan were killed in separate incidents on Monday, the alliance said. Two foreign civilians working for an American security company contracted to help train Afghan police were also killed in a Taliban suicide raid on a training camp in Kandahar, officials said.

NATO’s door remains open to Ukraine

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has said it will remain open to Ukraine after the country’s decision to shelve its membership bid. Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said NATO’s doors “remain open,” despite the Ukrainian parliament’s approval of a bill preventing the country from joining NATO. The move was widely seen as further evidence the new government in Kyiv is overturning the previous government’s pro-Western policies.

NATO announces decrease in KFOR troops

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that the security situation in Kosovo is steadily improving, according to reports. Rasmussen stated that even though the NATO mission in Kosovo (KFOR) would remain in the province, the number of troops in Kosovo would be decreased to 2,000.

KFOR could reduce troops to 5,000

NATO could speed up its plans to reduce the military presence in Kosovo, said reports this Thursday. The number of KFOR soldiers could go from 15,000 to 5,000 in 2010, announced NATO Allied Commander Europe Admiral James Stavridis.

NATO examines proposals for future

A panel of experts led by former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright has put forward recommendations for NATO’s future strategy.

The military alliance has been examining the proposals ahead of a summit in November when it will adopt a new mission statement.
