19 Sequels That Should Have Never Been Made
Occasionally, a sequel is a good thing. It allows for otherwise floundering plot points to be wrapped up, and for us to revisit cherished characters and friends again. But most of the time, it’s a mercenary grab for cash, without any love for the story or characters, and ends up being a steaming pile of [...]

Sofia Vergara Rape Joke Prompts Laughter On “The Viewâ€

An electoral test
“Mini mid-term” elections get under way in America, with Democrats braced for bad news
VOTERS were at the polls to elect governors in New Jersey and Virginia on Tuesday November 3rd and others were voting in a special election to fill a vacant congressional district in upstate New York. Together, these three races (numerous mayoral contests and state referendums are also taking place) provide the biggest political test for the parties since last year’s presidential election. A year since Barack Obama won that prize, these elections will be studied for clues about the electorate’s mood. Facing what looks likely to be a heavy defeat for the Democrats in Virginia and a fight to keep the governor’s mansion in New Jersey, the president would be wise to remind people of Tip O’Neill’s famous dictum that “all politics is local”. But Mr Obama will not be able to avoid some of the finger-pointing if things go very badly.
At the weekend Mr Obama supported Jon Corzine, the embattled governor of New Jersey, appearing at two rallies. Over the summer polls suggested that Mr Corzine was trailing Chris Christie, his Republican challenger, by large margins. Mr Christie attacked Mr Corzine’s record on the local economy and found some traction on ethics issues. Mr Christie has been embarrassed in the last days of campaigning by a bizarre political advert he made featuring a Monty Python sketch. Michael Palin, who appeared in it, criticised the advert and said he was surprised that Mr Christie, a former federal prosecutor, was not aware about copyright infringement. …
Down Mexico
Brazil envy is rife in Latin America’s other big economy
WHEN Brazil was not only included but named first among the BRICs, the widely used acronym for the leading emerging economies, Mexican business leaders protested that their country should also have been there. Well, maybe. But adding an “M” to the initial letters of Brazil, Russia, India and China would have made the name much less catchy (MBRICs? BRIMCs?). And the man who coined the acronym in 2001, Jim O’Neill of Goldman Sachs, has said that Mexico (along with South Korea) was in fact considered, but did not quite fit.
Mexico’s Brazil-envy is more intense than ever, as this columnist discovered last week in Mexico City. One local business leader said he was optimistic about the economic outlook, but that was because “I choose to be, because I don’t want the alternative—and, besides, next year can’t be any worse than this, can it?” Others mostly seemed worried, predicting several difficult years ahead—except for one bullish entrepreneur who has just started a consulting firm called, appropriately enough, Plan B. …

Film Weekly: Antichrist controversy
In this edition of Film Weekly, Andrew Pulver and Peter Bradshaw discuss Lars von Trier’s Antichrist while Xan Brooks hears from the director himself. Film-maker Anthony Fabian explains why he was drawn to the story of Skin, and the week’s key releases are reviewed.
Lars von Trier’s psychodrama Antichrist caused a commotion in Cannes in May. As filmgoers in the UK finally get a chance this week to see what the fuss was all about, Andrew Pulver and Peter Bradshaw discuss what it is about the film that has provoked this reaction (Clue: it’s not just the genital mutilation and the talking fox.) For good measure, Xan Brooks talks to Von Trier himself, who explains that the film was an extreme form of therapy.
Andrew and Peter also run the rule over some of the week’s releases: the reissue of Sergio Leone’s still hypnotic Once Upon a Time in the West and the “so slow it’s surreal” documentary Charles Dickens’s England.
And finally, Andrew talks to the director Anthony Fabian, whose drama Skin stars Sophie Okonedo and Sam Neill and is based on the true story of Sandra Laing, a black girl who was born to two white Afrikaner parents in apartheid-era South Africa. The director shares how he stumbled across the story, his shock at realising just how the Laing family was torn apart by the system, and why he believes the time is now right for South Africa to confront its past.

Villa complete £12m Downing deal
• Middlesbrough winger signs four-year deal at Villa Park
• Sylvain Distin next on Martin O’Neill’s list of targets
Aston Villa have completed the signing of the Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing for a fee in the region of £12m. The England international has joined Martin O’Neill’s side on a four-year deal after passing a medical.
Downing is O’Neill’s first summer recruit but will be unable to play a part in the Villa first team until October at the earliest and may not be fully fit until December after breaking a foot in the penultimate league game of last season. He will have an operation to remove a steel pin from the fractured bone in September before stepping up his fitness programme.
The 24-year-old felt he had to leave Boro following the club’s relegation to keep alive his hopes of playing at next summer’s World Cup with England. “Leaving Boro feels strange because I have always been at the club,” he said. “I supported them when I was young and I will always be a Boro fan.
“But I hope the fans will understand that I’m ambitious and want to win things. This move gives me a chance of that. Also, I definitely want to play at next year’s World Cup, so that’s my aim – to get back to full fitness, get back playing and get myself in the England team for the World Cup.
“I don’t just want to go there to sit it out this time either. I want to be in the team. I loved the last World Cup, it was brilliant, but I want to play a bigger part this time. I have to be with a good Premier League side if I want to do that.”
Downing had no hesitation in accepting Villa’s offer. “When it became apparent that Villa were interested I was very excited,” he said. “I wanted to come as soon as I met Martin O’Neill so I am delighted it’s now sorted out. As soon as I spoke to the manager at the training ground, I wanted to play for Villa and I wanted to play for him. He has great ambition and wants to build a good squad to take the club forward. I want to be part of that.
“As an outsider looking in, it was obvious that Villa were a club on the up. You can see a chairman and manager who want to build great things. They have done that over the past few seasons, particularly by finishing sixth last time around, which was great. But once you get here and see the stadium, the training ground, the people behind the scenes and the manager with his ambition and hopes for the future, it’s even better than you realised.”
Villa have agreed to pay £10m up front and a further £2m depending on appearances, and the winger’s arrival should spell the end of O’Neill’s interest in Tottenham’s David Bentley.
O’Neill will now turn his attentions to bolstering his back line, with Sylvain Distin a key target. Villa are understood to have made a £3m offer for the Portsmouth centre-half.
