The Low Anthem Tour Dates

LOW ANTHEM CONTINUE WORLD TOUR WITH WEST COAST DEBUT, DATES WITH BLIND PILOT

The Low Anthem

It’s been a banner year for The Low Anthem. In addition to being JamBase’s New Favorite Artist this month, the Rhode Island trio spent the greater part of the year touring with acts such as Elvis Perkins In Dearland, Joe Pug, Ray LaMontagne, Josh Ritter, and Langhorne Slim in support of their highly praised Nonesuch debut, Oh My God, Charlie Darwin, the band is gearing up for yet another stretch on the road, this time with the Portland group Blind Pilot. This run of 21 club and theater dates begins October 15 and continues through November 12 and includes the band’s West coast debut. Additionally, The Low Anthem will return to NYC for a performance at the Bell House at the end of August and travel to Europe for a month-long tour in September, where they’ve already played to much enthusiasm at Glastonbury, sold out a show at Union Chapel in London, and received stellar reviews in Uncut, Q, Mojo, NME, The Guardian, and The Independent.

The very special Avon Cinema in Providence, RI is hosting the first October U.S. tour date. The Cinema is a beautiful old movie theatre, the perfect setting for the band’s anticipated homecoming show and largest performance in Providence to date. The band will also be playing a free show on Block Island, where they recorded Charlie Darwin.

The Low Anthem’s most recent tour has taken them through a number of prestigious festivals, including Bonnaroo, Glastonbury, Lollapalooza, and the recent 50th Anniversary of the Newport Folk Festival, where they had humble beginnings working as recycling crew. This time around they got to share the stage with some of their heroes, including Pete Seeger, Arlo Guthrie, and Gilian Welch during a group sing-along.

THE LOW ANTHEM PRESS:

“Only a band since 2006, the depth of songwriting and ability to cross the dusty Americana landscape from such burdened acoustic folk songs like “To Ohio” to country barnburners, delicate three-part harmonies dripping with reverb, a Tom Waits cover, and soul-saving gospel without loosing continuity makes The Low Anthem worthy of all the hype they are sure to receive…” – JamBase

“Stately… Lyrics contemplating faith, loss, destruction and self-destruction.” – New York Times

“One of the breakthrough albums of 2009… A highly eventful journey into American songcraft, variously echoing Dylan, Springsteen, The Band, and Tom Waits.” – MOJO

“Really beautiful… The great music, it’s not what you play; it’s what you don’t play.” – Billy Bragg (PROJO)

Gerrard pulls out of England game

INTERNATIONAL FRIENDLY: Netherlands v England
Venue: Amsterdam Arena, Amsterdam Date: Wed, 12 August Kick-off: 2045 BST Coverage: Live on BBC Radio 5 Live and ITV1; Live text commentary on BBC Sport website

Ben Foster

Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster has withdrawn from the England squad for Wednesday’s friendly against the Netherlands in Amsterdam.

The 26-year-old picked up a knock during Sunday’s FA Community Shield defeat by Chelsea.

Manchester City’s Joe Hart – currently on loan at Birmingham City – has been called up as a replacement.

First-choice goalkeeper David James was left out of the squad by coach Fabio Capello because of a knee injury.

In James’ absence, Capello selected West Ham United’s Robert Green and Blackburn Rovers’ Paul Robinson, who will now compete with Hart to play at the Amsterdam Arena.

Foster has played twice for England, the first in the 1-0 defeat against Spain in February 2007 and the second as a second-half substitute in the 4-0 win over Slovakia in March this year.

606: DEBATE

"England has no decent keeper. this is an area of concern for our world cup chances"

RockingTheJoint

He is expected to be first-choice goalkeeper for Manchester United in the absence of regular number one Edwin Van der Sar, who will be sidelined for up to eight weeks after undergoing surgery on a broken finger and bone in his left hand.

Foster started the Community Shield match against Chelsea on Sunday, but was unable to prevent United losing 4-1 on penalties.

Following seven successive qualifying wins, England are on the cusp of qualifying for the World Cup next summer in South Africa, while the Dutch, who have also notched up seven victories, are assured of a place in the 2010 finals.

After playing the Netherlands, Capello’s England face Slovenia in a friendly on 5 September, before facing Croatia in a World Cup qualifier at Wembley on 9 September.

England squad for 12 August friendly against the Netherlands:

Goalkeepers: Joe Hart (Manchester City), Robert Green (West Ham United), Paul Robinson (Blackburn Rovers)

Defenders: Wayne Bridge (Manchester City), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United), Glen Johnson (Liverpool), Joleon Lescott (Everton), John Terry (Chelsea), Matthew Upson (West Ham United)

Midfielders: Gareth Barry (Manchester City), David Beckham (LA Galaxy), Michael Carrick (Manchester United), Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), James Milner (Aston Villa), Theo Walcott (Arsenal), Shaun Wright-Phillips (Manchester City), Ashley Young (Aston Villa)

Forwards: Carlton Cole (West Ham United), Jermain Defoe(Tottenham Hotspur), Emile Heskey (Aston Villa), Wayne Rooney (Manchester United)

New Zealand votes on smacking ban

Child on stairs (file image)

New Zealanders are voting on whether parental smacking of children should remain a criminal offence.

The so-called anti-smacking law introduced in 2007 has divided the country, prompting the country’s first citizen-initiated postal referendum.

The referendum asks: "Should a smack as part of good parental correction be a criminal offence in New Zealand"

Supporters say the law gives children the same rights as adults, while opponents say it criminalises parents.

The postal vote is open until 21 August.

Parental discipline

However, the result will not be binding on the government.

The aim of New Zealand’s 2007 law change was to stop people using "parental discipline" as a defence against assault changes.

The move was viewed by many as an important step in combating New Zealand’s high rates of child abuse and murder.

The Vote No campaign said the current law had led to "good families [becoming] victims of unwarranted investigations and even prosecutions by police and… Child Youth and Family [government department]".

It said resources were being wasted on investigations into cases that "simply aren’t abuse".

Supporters of the new law said babies and children have the same legal protection against assault as adults.

The Vote Yes campaigners said that "positive, non-violent, parenting is more effective than corporal punishment, as well as supporting better long-term outcomes for children and for society".

Confusing question

However, critics say the referendum itself is confusing and Prime Minister John Key said the wording was "ambiguous".

But the government believes the current law is working well with police prosecuting only serious cases.

The New Zealand Police reviewed cases of smacking since the 2007 law change.

It said it investigated 13 cases between March 2007 and April 2009 – with one prosecution.

The Vote Yes campaign said such figures showed the law had not led to "mass criminalisation of good parents".

Electoral Enrolment Centre manager Murray Wicks said enrolments were up by 11,600 from November’s general election, just topping the three million mark for the first time, the New Zealand Herald reported.

Phelps coach wades into suit row

Fina World Championships
Date: 17 July-2 August (swimming from 26 July) Venue: Rome
Coverage:Live/highlights on BBC Two, Red Button and BBC Sport website

Michael Phelps’s coach says swimming’s biggest star should not compete again until the sport’s governing body bans the use of controversial new suits.

Phelps lost his first major race since 2005 to Paul Biedermann, who wore a suit Fina will make illegal in 2010.

So far 11 world records have fallen at the World Championships to swimmers in contentious 100% polyurethane outfits.

Bob Bowman said he would tell eight-time Olympic champion Phelps "not to swim until the rules are implemented".

Phelps, whose dominance in the pool at the Beijing Oympics sparked an upsurge of interest in the sport, still wears a Speedo LZR suit, which is 50% polyurethane and has been superseded by a new generation of hi-tech bodysuits.

The 24-year-old American was beaten in the 200m freestyle final in the World Championships in Rome on Tuesday by Germany’s Biedermann, who was wearing an all-polyurethane suit and took Phelps’s world record in the process.

Fina have agreed to ban the performance-enhancing suits next year but this ruling may not come into effect until April or May and Bowman feels this is not soon enough.

"I’m done with this. It has to be implemented immediately. The sport is in shambles right now and they better do something or they’re going to lose their guy who fills these seats," he said.

RECORDS IN ROME

  • Day One (six records):
    M 400m free Paul Biedermann (Arena X-Glide)
    W 200m IM Ariana Kukors (Jaked 01)
W 4x100m free (2) Netherlands AND Britta Steffen broke 100m free on her leg (Adidas Hydrofoil)
    W 100m butterfly Sarah Sjostrom (Arena X-Glide)
    W 400m free Federica Pellegrini (Jaked 01)
  • Day Two (five records):
    W 100m butterfly Sarah Sjostrom (Arena X-Glide)
    W 200m IM Ariana Kukors (Jaked 01)
    W 100m breaststroke Rebecca Soni (Arena X-Glide)
    W 100m backstroke Anastasia Zueva (Arena X-Glide)
    M 100m breaststroke Brenton Rickard (Jaked 01)
  • Day Three (four records):
W 100m backstroke Gemma Spofforth (Speedo LZR)
    W 200m Freestyle Federica Pellegrini (Jaked 01)
M 50m breaststroke Cameron Van Der Burgh (Arena X-Glide)
    M 200m freestyle Paul Biedermann (Arena X-Glide)

"We’ve lost all the history of the sport. Does a 10-year-old boy in Baltimore want to break Paul Biedermann’s record Is that going to make him join swimming

"It took Michael from 2003 to 2008 to go from 1:46 to 1:42.9 and this guy’s done it in 11 months. That’s an amazing training program. I would love to know how that works."

Biedermann clocked one minute 42.00 seconds, which beat Phelps’ world mark of 1:42.96 from the Beijing Olympics.

On Monday, Biedermann also broke the men’s 400m freestyle record, which was held for seven years by Australian Ian Thorpe.

The German has improved on his personal best by almost seven-and-a-half seconds since he started using the suit.

Phelps praised Biedermann’s achievement, but looked forward to a time when the banning of 100% polyurethane suits returns swimming to an even contest.

"Paul is a very strong swimmer and has had an excellent year," said Phelps. "I have not been beaten by the swimsuit but by a great athlete.

"However, a solution needs to be found to the issue of swimsuits as this is not swimming any more.

"Technology has to go forward but I am looking forward to the time when we can go back to pure swimming.

"I will start working as soon as I can and I am confident that I will be in my best shape for the next major competitions, particularly for London [2012 Olympics]."

On Tuesday, a Fina committee upheld last week’s decision by the wider organisation to restrict males to suits that go from the waist to the top of the knees, while female suits cannot go past the shoulders or beyond the knees, from next year.

"What Fina’s top officials have done to the sport, what they have allowed to happen, is an absolute disgrace"

Grant Hackett

In addition, Fina also announced that suit materials will be restricted to "textiles", a definition which will be determined by a scientific committee, and that there will be specific standards for buoyancy, thickness and permeability.

The complete rules will be given to swimsuit companies by 30 September.

"The rules will be applied in 2010. That can be April or May. It depends on the time manufacturers need to pass from polyurethane to textiles," said Fina executive director Cornel Marculescu.

The controversy began at the start of 2008 when swimmers began to wear the part-polyurethane Speedo LZR suits.

At the Beijing Olympics 23 of the 25 world records set were by swimmers wearing the new attire and by the end of the year 108 new world marks had been set by those wearing the suit.

Since swimmers began to wear the 100% polyurethane suits – the Jaked 01, Arena X-Glide and Adidas Hydrofoil to name but a few – 42 world records have fallen up to and including the third day of the World Championships.

"I would be perfectly happy if we adjust all the records starting with the LZR. If we took them all out and went back to 2007," said Bowman.

606: DEBATE
What is your view on the swimsuit debate

"Even those in Beijing. We can have them in a separate list. These were done in polyurethane suits and then these are done in textile suits. Then we can start over in January and make the sport about swimming."

Three-time Olympic champion Grant Hackett has branded Fina an "absolute disgrace" for allowing the polyurethane suits at the World Championships.

The Australian’s 800m and 1500m freestyle marks are the only pre-bodysuit records still standing.

"New leadership is needed to look after the sport. I’m furious at Fina," said the Australian, who retired in 2008.

Speaking about Biedermann’s new mark in the 400m freestyle, Hackett told The Australian Newspaper: "I hate saying this because I sound like a bad sport, but that world record would not have gone without that suit.

"What Fina’s top officials have done to the sport, what they have allowed to happen, is an absolute disgrace."</p

Cavendish wins record ninth stage

• Ninth career win puts Manxman past Barry Hoban’s total
• Alberto Contador retains lead with Lance Armstrong in third

Mark Cavendish has become the most successful British rider in the history of the Tour de France after winning his fifth stage of this year’s Tour, the ninth of his career. He has now broken Barry Hoban’s record of eight stages – set between 1967 and 1975 – in his third year on the Tour.

The Manxman held off green jersey holder, Thor Hushovd, in a sprint for the line to take the 178km 19th stage from Bourgoin-Jallieu to Aubenas. Alberto Contador held on to the yellow jersey, while Lance Armstrong remains in third after finishing in 3hr 50min 35sec, the same time as Cavendish. Britain’s Bradley Wiggins lost four seconds to Armstrong after coming home in the second group.

“I gave everything for the line,” said an exhausted Cavendish, after beginning his dash 300 metres out. “After the disappointment of the last few days, I’m so happy.” He also praised his team for helping to drag him back into contention at the end.

The category two final climb looked like it would put paid to Cavendish’s hopes of victory, but his Columbia team-mates gave him the platform to attack. Cavendish – who is the first man to win five stages in a single Tour since Armstrong in 2004 – now stands on 235 points, 25 behind Hushovd, in the race for the green jersey.

Amsterdam: Gartine – breakfast from the owner’s garden

By Maarten-Jan Meyer zu Schlochtern

Gartine is one of my favourites for a unique breakfast, excellent lunch and English high tea – all served on antique chinaware, which has been collected by the owners with loving care over the years. The atmosphere is easy and pleasant.

All ingredients come from the owner’s vegetable garden, so the dishes are always super fresh and of good quality. On top of that, Gartine adopted 58 chickens at the foundation ‘Adopt a Chicken’ and these provide farm-fresh eggs. They also use products of the ‘Ark van Smaak’ from Slow Food Netherlands. So when you eat there, you eat ‘eco and green’.

Gartine is in a small alley called ‘Taksteeg’ in the old centre of Amsterdam, between Rokin and Spui.

Rome: Bar-a-book – drinking while reading

By Mariaceleste de Martino

Fabiola is the woman who runs it. She prepares excellent aperitifs served on a large wooden table in the middle of the room, so it feels like being at a friend’s party.

There is a list of wines by the glass – not a great variety, I must admit, but they are good at least. The food is homemade: cous cous, vegetable quiches and pies, tarts and little pizzas, sandwiches (mostly vegetarian) and many other snacks, including cakes at times. I like it here because it is located in one of my neighbourhoods, so it really makes me feel at home.

The furniture is totally random – you are surrounded by shelves of books that you can buy – vintage like the neighbourhood. Post second world war kind of design, just like most of the buildings that have been either rebuilt or restored after the area was completely shelled by US aircraft during the war. Now, it is considered one of the trendy-bohemian areas in town.

If you want to do as the Romans do, this is one of the real Roman places to pick.

Lisbon: Miradouro da Graça – the perfect viewpoint

by Maureen Moore

A picture is worth … oh it’s such a cliché I am not even going to finish the sentence, but this is one picture opportunity that shouldn’t be missed. (The photo is looking up towards the tree-canopied viewpoint, not from it.)

From the top of a hillside, hugging the historic and picturesque castle neighbourhood, you can see a maze of red tiled rooftops below, the Baixa district, a river to the south and the red 25th of April bridge beyond that – there is not much that this view doesn’t take in. Just take the 28 tram to one of its end destinations – Graça – and walk left towards the cliff.

A pleasant terrace lined with trees and a small kiosk café serving hot and cold drinks makes it an ideal spot to recharge your batteries. All of Lisbon’s beauty lays below you in her haphazard and slightly dishevelled, but charming, manner. It’s these views that bring the romance to the city.

Brussels: Recyclart – the sound of the underground

By Wouter Spitters

If you’re not interested in spots where you have to be hip and trendy but want something more ‘underground’, then Recyclart is the place for you.

Literally because of its location beneath the railway track, and even more so because this former railway station is an alternative artistic hotspot. Meet your cultural soulmates in the bar, or have a look at the art exhibitions, photography expositions or architecture projects.

Want to move your feet? Go the the frequently organised parties or concerts and shake your body to the rhythms of dubstep, electro, worldbeat or guitar noise. Disko disko partizani!

Hamburg: Alsterwanderweg – away from civilisation and back

By Ute Kreitz

The “Alsterwanderweg” is a hiking trail that runs along the Alster River for about 56km. The southern section of the trail (22km) leads through the ‘Alstertal’ (Alster valley) with wonderful parks and villas, along the outer and the inner Alster, and terminates directly in the heart of Hamburg: at the harbour where the Alster runs into the Elbe River. The trail is very popular with locals year-round as every season brings its own charm to this scenic route.

Take public transport up north to Poppenbüttel to begin your five-hour adventure, either on foot or by bicycle. As you head south, you’ll sometimes follow the meandering river on its right then on its left again.

There are some sections where you’ll need to cross or walk along a street. Some of the many rowing clubs and locks on your way down to Winterhude have restaurants with gorgeous views of the river.

After passing through Eppendorf, you’ll reach the spacious Alsterpark on the outer Alster, a very wide section of the river with a beautiful view of the inner city’s skyline. Finally, you’ll know you’re on the last stretch of the path when you pass under Kennedy – and Lombardsbrücke to arrive at the inner Alster and the city centre.

Leave the Alsterarkaden behind you and terminate this exciting hike at the “Baumwall” or “Landungsbrücken” metro stop. Although the direction of trail is marked by signs, be sure to bring a map with you.

Bosnia buries Srebrenica victims

Bosniak Muslim women weep over shrouded coffins at Potocari cemetery outside Srebrenica, 11 July

The remains of 534 newly-identified Bosniak Muslim victims of the Srebrenica massacre have been buried 14 years after the event.

Some 8,000 Bosniak Muslims, mainly men and boys, were killed by Bosnian Serbs near the town of Srebrenica in 1995 and buried in mass graves.

About 5,000 of the victims have been identified to date.

Thousands of mourners attended the ceremony, an annual reminder of the Bosniak Muslims’ suffering in the war.

At the Potocari memorial cemetery just outside Srebrenica, in eastern Bosnia, victims’ names were read out as coffins wrapped in green cloth were passed through the crowd.

"Although we were desperately searching for his remains for years, it was so hard to receive a telephone call telling us that my father had been identified," Nurveta Guster, 27, told AFP news agency.

"I saw him for the last time at our house in Srebrenica. He left with other men through the woods trying to escape."

Fugitive general

Srebrenica was attacked by Bosnian Serb forces on 11 July 1995, virtually ignoring Dutch UN troops who were stationed by the town, which had been designated a UN "safe haven".

The troops, operating under a restrictive UN mandate allowed Bosnian Serb forces into the town. Relatives of those killed have brought unsuccessful claims against the government of the Netherlands in an effort to claim compensation.

A woman weeps at Srebrenica, 11 July 2009

Speaking at the latest burial ceremony, Charles English, US Ambassador Bosnia-Hercegovina, said: "The world failed to act, failed to protect the innocent of Srebrenica."

Ranging in age from 14 to 72, most of latest victims to be buried were found in secondary mass graves where they had been moved from initial burial sites in a bid by Serb troops to cover up war crimes.

The International Court of Justice in The Hague, Netherlands, has ruled that the Srebrenica massacre was an act of genocide.

The court is currently trying former Bosnian Serb political leader Radovan Karadzic on genocide charges. He was arrested in 2008, but denies his guilt.

Gen Ratko Mladic, who led the Bosnian Serb troops involved in the killings, remains in hiding. He is said to be in Serbia.

Serbian President Boris Tadic has said his country is doing all it can to track him down and send him to The Hague.
