Facebook, Twitter Security Tips: Don’t Fall Victim to Identity Thieves
Not all news is fit to print—particularly when it comes to social networks. It can be hard to know which is which for some people. After all, it is not uncommon for people to use Twitter, Facebook or other sites to pass on mundane details of their day. But sometimes details thought to be mundane can actually be a gold mine for identity thieves, scammers and other criminals savvy enough or perhaps opportunistic enough to mine social networks for details they can use. Some information, security specialists warn, can be used to target you. This was brought home recently in New Hampshire, where three men were arrested and accused of choosing homes to break into based on Facebook status updates. So just what type of information should you avoid putting online? Here, eWEEK, with the help of several different security experts, has pulled together seven security tips and recommendations to help users of Facebook, Twitter and other social networking sites protect their identity and other personal information. – …

Selling luxury goods online: The chic learn to click
Luxury firms are digital laggards, but some are catching up
WHEN Oscar de la Renta, an American fashion house, launched a transactional website some years ago, it expected people to buy mostly smaller items such as belts and perfume. The firm was stunned when it received an online order last spring for an $80,000 sable coat from a new customer in New Hampshire. He couldn’t get to New York, apparently. Online customers have been snapping up the firm’s core product: $4,000 cocktail dresses. “We could not have been more wrong in our expectations of the internet,” says Alex Bolen, the firm’s chief executive. Online purchases are still a small proportion of total sales, but growing rapidly.
Most luxury-goods firms are less open-minded. Many scorn the internet as a plaything for plebs. A product sold online, wrote Jean-Noel Kapferer, a French branding guru, in “The Luxury Strategy”, published last year, ceases to be a luxury item. In early 2008, of 178 luxury firms around the world surveyed by Forrester Research, only a third sold their products on the internet. That figure has risen, but still about half of firms don’t sell online at all, estimates Federico Marchetti, the founder of Yoox Group, owner of Yoox.com, a luxury-goods website. …
May 19, 1780: Darkness at Noon Enshrouds New England
1780: In the midst of the Revolutionary War, darkness descends on New England at midday. Many people think Judgment Day is at hand. It will be remembered as New England’s Dark Day.

The limits to verbiage
The president’s speech was underwhelming, which was probably better than the alternative
ONE thing you can generally count on when the lanky figure of Barack Obama approaches a podium is that you will hear a good speech; and the more trouble he is in, the better the speech is likely to be. He has never spoken more powerfully than just after losing the New Hampshire primary back in January 2008, or when the eruption of his pastor, Jeremiah Wright, threatened to derail him later that year. For his first state-of-the-union message on January 27th, the president needed something extra-special. His ratings are down below 50%, and the loss of a crucial Senate seat in Massachusetts a week earlier means that much of his domestic agenda, notably his efforts to reform health care, is stalled if not dead. But in place of the mighty oratory one might have expected, the president delivered an inordinately long, unrepentant but ultimately rather cautious speech that eschewed the tub-thumping and delivered a little bit to everyone.
There were alternatives to the middle course he chose. He might have tacked to the right, in the hope of winning over Republicans, but he would probably have failed. He might have lurched to the left, embracing the sort of populism that seemed presaged by his post-Massachusetts declaration that he was “ready for a fight” with the banks, but that would have alienated the centre. So he chose to remain, just about, the pragmatist whom this newspaper endorsed back in November 2008. But he gave no sign of how he plans to pursue his agenda or solve the problems that are piling up around him. …
The week ahead
New figures show Chinese exports growing, and other news of the coming days
• FIGURES due out on Monday January 11th are expected to show that China’s exports in December were higher than a year ago, after 13 months of year-on-year declines. China’s exports fell by around 17% in 2009 as a whole, but other countries’ slumped by even more. Foreigners insist that the main reason for China’s growing market share is that the government has kept its currency weak. But lower incomes encouraged consumers to switch to the sort of cheaper goods that China produces, and the elimination of global textile quotas in January 2009 allowed China to increase its slice of that market.
• A DECISION on the issue of gay marriage in America takes a step towards the Supreme Court on Monday January 11th. A federal court will consider a lawsuit questioning the constitutionality of California’s voter-approved ban against same-sex marriage. Proposition 8, a ballot-box initiative passed in November 2008, ended California’s short stint as a state that allowed same-sex marriages. The trial will be the first to consider whether bans on gay marriage violate federal civil rights and anti-discrimination laws. Elsewhere, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Iowa, Vermont and Connecticut have all legalised gay weddings and Washington, DC, may well do so soon. …
