Schumpeter: Ahead of the curve

Daniel Bell, who died on January 25th, was one of the great sociologists of capitalism

ASKED what he specialised in, Daniel Bell replied: “generalisations”. Mr Bell lived a varied life. He grew up in New York City, so poor that he sometimes had to scavenge for food. Yet he ended his days in bourgeois comfort in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He spent 20 years as a journalist, mostly as Fortune’s labour editor, before decamping to academia. His boss, Henry Luce, desperate to keep his star writer, asked him why he was leaving. He gave four reasons: June, July, August and September.

His taste for generalisations grew with the eating. He produced three of the great works of post-war sociology: “The End of Ideology” (1960), “The Coming of Post-Industrial Society” (1973) and “The Cultural Contradictions of Capitalism” (1978). On the Times Literary Supplement’s list of the 100 most influential books since the second world war, two were by Mr Bell. …

Tony Williams Lifetime Tribute Vernon Reid, Medeski, Jack Bruce

FOUR MONSTER TALENTS GATHER TO SALUTE VISIONARY MUSICIAN & BAND

Tony Williams Lifetime Tribute featuring legendary bassist of Cream and one-time Lifetime member Jack Bruce, guitarist Vernon Reid (Living Colour), organist John Medeski (Medeski Martin & Wood), and ace drummer Cindy Blackman brings their unique take on Williams’ revolutionary music to The Blue Note in New York City (Jan. 27-30), Yoshi’s in Oakland (Feb. 2-5) and Jazz Alley in Seattle (Feb. 7 & 8).

Lifetime was founded as a trio in 1969 by Tony Williams who featured electric guitarist John McLaughlin and organist Larry Young. Lifetime’s first album, titled Emergency!, was rejected by many jazz fans who came to know Williams’ music from his work with the Miles Davis Quintet in the ‘60s, but many now consider it a fusion classic. Jack Bruce joined Lifetime on their second recording Turn It Over, providing bass and vocals, making the group a quartet. But Lifetime was short-lived, and Williams took the concept through various iterations, starting with the New Tony Williams Lifetime 1975. The last New Lifetime recording, Play or Die, was released in 1980. Williams, widely considered one of the greatest drummers of all time, continued to perform and record extensively until his untimely death in 1997.

The idea of a tribute band “really started a long time ago with the tragic death of Mr. Williams,” Vernon Reid wrote in his blog at livingcolourmusic.com on the eve of the Japan dates. “I’ve had the great fortune to work with the extraordinary bassist Jack Bruce of Cream, and during a tour with him started to chat about Tony Williams and Lifetime and their close personal relationship. I thought of Cindy Blackman, a true devotee of Mr. Williams whose work in that regard is not as well known as her long association with the rock star Lenny Kravitz. John Medeski’s organ work evokes the mysterious power of the vastly under-appreciated Larry Young.” Reid went on to cite John McLaughlin of the original Lifetime band as a major influence on his guitar playing, “mainly from the later Mahavishnu period, the seeds of which were sown in Tony Williams Lifetime.”

Cindy Blackman also expressed her excitement at being involved in the group, exclaiming “Tony Williams is my drum hero! The Tony Williams Lifetime influenced not only Miles Davis but Mahavishnu, Return to Forever and the next three decades of electric music to the present.”

For Jack Bruce, paying tribute to Williams is a homecoming that is more than welcome. “One of the greatest highlights of my musical career was playing with Tony’s amazing band,” he said. “Together I believe we can rekindle the spirit of a more joyous and optimistic era.”

EMC Launches 41 SMB Storage Products in Splashy Transatlantic Event

There was a lot of storage product information to present all at once, but EMC was bound and determined to do its first product launch of 2011 in a huge way on Jan. 18. In concurrent New York City and London events, the world’s largest independent storage company took the wraps off 41 new enterprise storage products for all markets. The new items, which become available in the current quarter, include a line of low-end storage servers aimed at SMBs called VNX and VNXe, which eventually will replace the company’s standard Clariion and Celerra products; an upgraded version of the Data Domain backup packages; a new Data Domain archiving array; its first branded Isilon "big data" array; and new software for its Symmetrix VMAX systems. The entry-level VNX and VNXe storage systems feature a starting price of about $10,000, so the traditionally large-enterprise company is making a concerted effort to move downstream in the market. Oh, yes, a splashy event like this wouldn’t be complete with photo opportunities, and there were a couple of nonsensical stunts involved. – …

Grateful Dead: Europe Â’72 Tour Box Set

INDIVIDUALLY NUMBERED, LIMITED EDITION COLLECTION

AVAILABLE EXCLUSIVELY AT DEAD.NET AND SHIPS IN SEPTEMBER

sketch of new box set

Grateful Dead slipped the
shores of America and crossed the pond for its first-ever major European tour in April 1972. The legendary 22-
show run spawned Europe ’72, a live triple album that remains one of the band’s best-selling and most
beloved releases. A tour this momentous deserves a boxed set of historic proportions and Dead.net has stamped your passport to relive every note from the European tour
with Europe ’72: The Complete Recordings, an individually numbered, limited edition collection
that includes more than 60 discs with over 70 hours of music featuring every show from what is arguably the
Grateful Dead’s greatest tour. The box set ships in September.

Europe ’72: The Complete Recordings is housed in a replica steamer trunk reminiscent of the ones
prevalently used at the time. The travel
chest contains tour memorabilia, a coffee-table book with never-before-seen photos, and a comprehensive essay
by noted Dead author Blair Jackson. Each performance will also be accompanied by an essay specific to
the show written by top Dead scholars including David Gans, Gary Lambert, Nicholas Meriwether, and
Steve Silberman.

Jeffrey Norman, the primary mixer of the Dead’s archival multi-track material for the past 15 years, is
mixing each
show from the original 16-track recordings.

Due to ship in September, the boxed set is available exclusively from Dead.net, which is taking orders now. The
price of the collection is $450, which works out to the remarkably low price of about $20 for each show, or roughly
the cost of a transatlantic flight from New York City to London in 1972 (price of time machine not included).

The first 3,000 fans to order will have
their copy personalized with a name requested by the purchaser. Once the 3,000 order goal is reached by April 1,
Dead.net will continue to take orders through the summer but will limit production of the collection to a maximum
of 7,200 pieces, all of which will be individually numbered. Orders will no longer be taken at some date (to be
determined) later in the summer.

The tour offers a snapshot of a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums—
Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty, and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a
year since
the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been
broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as
a member of the touring band.

There was a ton of new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 and during the spring of
’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble On Rose,” “One More
Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen‘s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger
(Two
Souls In Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were
interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar
Magnolia,” “Bertha,” and “Not Fade Away”—and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers—the Europe
’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One,” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat
Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight,” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.”
