The 14 Best Zombie Flicks

The last few years have seen a resurgence in the zombie genre, to the point where zombie film rarely stand on their own weight, instead acting as flavoring to other stories — be they documentaries (World War Z), romantic comedies (Zombieland) or historical dramas (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies). Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Band | NYE | Review

Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi :: 12.31.10 :: Florida Theatre :: Jacksonville, Florida

Derek & Susan by Ray Proetto

Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi put their solo acts on hold in 2010 to write and make music together with a fresh new band. In April they began playing new songs, trying to find their identity. Ten months later they have evolved into a cohesive unit, putting out sets of music that flow as majestically as the nearby St. Johns River into the Atlantic Ocean. Their New Year’s Eve celebration took place near the river banks of Jacksonville, Florida.

After an opening set from Scrapmatic, the Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Band began their NYE set with “Don’t Let Me Slide” followed by my personal favorite “Midnight in Harlem,” a hopeful tune with a comforting and familiar feel. Derek & The Dominoes tune “Anyday” saw Trucks sliding up and down his guitar, evoking cheers from the attentive audience. The show took a turn down Funky Street with “Love Has Something Else to Say.” Brothers Oteil (bass, Allman Brothers Band) and Kofi Burbridge (keyboards, Derek Trucks Band) emanated fun-loving grooves from their corner of the stage all night long, making way for some patrons to sashay in their New Year’s attire up the aisles of the Florida Theatre (until being told to sit down by security).

Horn section by Ray Proetto

Kebbi Williams flowed through his saxophone across the stage, inspiring impressive leads from Oteil. Though this marked only the second show with the horn section, put together specifically for this New Year’s run, it seemed as if they had been in the band since April. Joining Williams, on trombone, was Saunders “Service” Sermons and Maurice “Mo’ Betta” Brown on trumpet.

The execution of the Eric Clapton arrangement of “Presence of the Lord” had more and more people finding their way to their feet. However, most in the audience remained unsure of what to do with themselves physically, most remaining seated and grooving cerebrally. Mike Mattison took lead vocal duties on Taj Mahal‘s “Leaving Trunk,” which made way for new blues number “That Did It”. The verses have Mattison and Mark Rivers laying down playful background vocal harmonies with Motown-esque Aah-ooh’s while Susan sings a soulful tale of heartache.

It is no secret that Susan is a world class vocalist, but on “That Did It” her guitar skills were front and center. She laid into her instrument with enough soul and power to make the ghost of Sister Rosetta Tharpe proud. Her approach to the six-string is a no-gimmick, loud and subtle reminder that she is the mother of Derek Trucks’ children.

Derek Trucks’ role as bandleader is performed perfectly. He gives everyone else onstage the space they need to become who they are musically. At times, when all eyes turn to him for a solo, he will defer the moment to someone else. Once everybody has found themselves in their given space, Trucks’ bright red Gibson SG is implied. With a meditative expression on his face, Derek tears sonic holes in the universe; each one providing grist for the mill of his spiritual journey with a guitar.

“Learn How to Love” is a thick swamp-fueled song that Derek and Susan wrote with Eric Krasno. Max Roach’s “Garvey’s Ghost” made an appearance late in the set featuring a powerful, tribal and lyrical drum solo which started with Tyler “The Falcon” Greenwell on groove duty while JJ Johnson took lead until handing it off to Greenwell, which led to both drummers playing off of each other with brilliant melody. The other band members gave the drummers their full, conscious attention during the drum solo, including Trucks, who took a knee center-stage as if to show respect for the most ancient form of musical expression.

Derek & Susan Band by Ray Proetto

The best, and rarest, quality of a good drummer is selflessness. Johnson and Greenwell pull selflessness out of each other creating a huge seamless rhythmic foundation on which the rest of the band rests upon. The end of “Garvey’s Ghost” began a cover of Joe Cocker’s “Space Captain.” which Derek and Susan recorded earlier in the year with Herbie Hancock at their backyard home studio.

The triumphant vocals at the beginning of Delany & Bonnie’s “Coming Home” started the countdown to midnight. Smiles, hugs, and kisses welcomed in the New Year as the band celebrated with Ray Charles’ “Night Time is The Right Time” and Mattison’s song “Bound for Glory”. Aretha Franklin’s “Spirit in The Dark” encored the evening and sent the North Florida faithful strutting into the night.

The band is due to release their first album in June of 2011 and has dates booked in April for Australia and New Zealand.

May the best of last year be the worst of this year.

SIA’s new CEO may shed Virgin Atlantic stake

Singapore Airlines’ Goh Choon Phong, who takes over as chief executive officer tomorrow, may shed the last major remains of the carrier’s global expansion strategy as he confronts rising competition in Asia.

Goh, 47, may get offers for the airline’s 49% stake in Virgin Atlantic after the UK carrier said this month it had received tie-up inquiries. Outgoing CEO Chew Choon Seng called the investment “underperforming” two years ago and has said the airline would consider a sale.

In Asia, Goh faces low-fare competition on long-haul routes from Jetstar and AirAsia X Sdn., as well as renewed efforts by Cathay Pacific Airways and Korean Air Lines Co. to lure lucrative business-class travellers. Middle East carriers Emirates Airline, Qatar Airways and Etihad Airways have also ordered close to 300 planes since 2007 as they build hubs linking Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.

“Goh has a tough job ahead of him,” said K. Ajith, a UOB-Kay Hian Research Pte analyst in Singapore. “The environment is drastically different from five or 10 years ago, when SIA managed to fend off competition by focusing on its branding.”

Virgin, 51% owned by billionaire Richard Branson, hired Deutsche Bank AG to explore options as British Airways Plc boosts cooperation with American Airlines across the Atlantic and completes a merger with Madrid-based Iberia Lineas Aereas de Espana SAtigert. Singapore Air bought its stake in a 600 million-pound ($1.2 billion) investment concluded in 2000.

SIA would consider “interesting opportunities” for the stake, Nicholas Ionides, a spokesman, said in an e-mail. Goh, who joined the carrier as a cadet administrative officer in 1990 after graduating from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, declined interview requests, he said.

Virgin Offer
Whether SIA will sell the Virgin stake will largely depend on what price is offered since the carrier isn’t short of funds, said Rohan Suppiah, an analyst at Kim Eng Securities Pte in Singapore.

“SIA isn’t in a hurry to sell, but if they get a fair price they will,” he said. “Virgin hasn’t provided any significant synergies over the years.”

Delta Air Lines Inc. and Middle East airlines are among carriers exploring a Virgin tie-up, Sky News reported this month, without saying where it got the information from. Singapore Air’s stake complicates a deal as local ownership rules limit non-European investors to minority stakes.

“Either SIA sells or Branson loses effective control by selling part of his stake,” said Andrew Miller, chief executive officer of CAPA Consulting LLC, which advises airlines.

Very Supportive
SIA is “very supportive of our business strategy including the review by Deutsche Bank,” Greg Dawson, a Virgin spokesman, said without elaborating. Virgin operates 38 twin-aisle planes, according to its website.

Chew, who has spent almost four decades at SIA, sold a leasing arm and spun off a ground-handling unit while CEO to focus on the carrier’s main flying business. He will take over as Singapore Exchange’s chairman on Jan 1.

Chew’s predecessor, Cheong Choong Kong, bought stakes in Virgin and Air New Zealand to expand overseas. The value of the Air New Zealand investment was written down in 2001, and the remaining holdings were sold off three years later. Virgin was expected to hold an initial public offering within three to five years of SIA’s investment, Chew said in 2006.

Shares Trailing
SIA, which operates 110 planes, was unchanged at $15.54 as of 11:04 a.m. in the city-state. The carrier has trailed the 15-stock Bloomberg Asia Pacific Airlines Index this year amid rising competition for premium and low-cost travellers. The shares have climbed 4% this year, compared with the index’s 27% advance.

Competition is intensifying in the premium market, which accounts for about 40% of SIA’s sales. Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific is working on a HK$1 billion ($165 million) business-class upgrade to lure executive travellers.

Korean Air, which aims to get 50% of passenger sales from premium classes by 2019, will receive its first five Airbus SAS A380s next year. The superjumbos will each be fitted with 94 business-class seats, compared with the 60 found in SIA’s A380s. Emirates is building a fleet of 90 A380s.

“SIA needs to think about how to position for the longer-term given the competitive landscape,” said Christopher Wong, who oversees $45 billion of assets, including SIA shares, at Aberdeen Asset Management.

Budget Competition
SIA has responded to budget competition through a 33% stake in Tiger Airways Holdings. The low-cost affiliate, which operates from Singapore and Australia, plans to form a budget airline in Bangkok next year with Thai Airways International Pcl.

Tiger, Qantas Airways’s Jetstar and AirAsia Bhd. are leading discount carriers’ market share gains in Asia as they add new planes. Budget airlines accounted for about 22% of passengers in the first 10 months of the year at Singapore’s Changi airport. That compares with 12% in 2008, according to data from operator Changi Airport Group.

Low-fare carriers are also adding intercontinental routes. Jetstar started flights to Melbourne from Singapore this month, touting fares 30% cheaper than full-service airlines. It plans to add more long-haul services next year. AirAsia’s long- haul affiliate is offering flights to Australia, London and Japan from its base in Kuala Lumpur.

SIA’s corporate travel base and reputation will be an asset as Goh faces the new competition, said Steven Lim, who manages about $257 million at Daiwa SB Investments in Singapore. The carrier, among six airlines with Skytrax’s highest five-star rating, has also been profitable every year since going public in 1985.

“As a business hub, SIA does enjoy the advantage of business travel,” Lim said. “Goh’s immediate challenge is to continue Chew’s good work, keep the company’s profit record intact and maintain the reputation SIA has as a premium airline.”

JamBase Questionnaire: Roots of Creation

Welcome back to JamBase’s baker’s dozen to the bright lights of the music world. Last time we heard from The Steepwater Band.

new live album

Southern New Hampshire isn’t the first spot folks start looking for high-octane modern reggae, which is too bad since Roots of Creation are one of the most exhilarating, rules breaking units blowing up right now. With of ample dousing of gnarly, rock-flavored guitars and a healthy blip logic that shows more than a passing familiarity with contemporary electronica, RoC join the shortlist of young bands – UK-based Soothsayers, New Zealand’s The Black Seeds and fellow U.S. acts John Brown’s Body and Groundation – moving reggae forward into the 21st century.

You can hear their highly engaging, forward pushing sound in action on RoC Live, Vol. 2 (released on October 26 on Harmonized Records). Culled from performances from 2009 and 2010, including songs recorded during sets at the Wormtown and Nateva Music Festivals, The Paradise Rock Club in Boston and more, Live Vol. 2, the band’s fourth album, features the engaging single “Policy, ” a bouncing cover of Talking Heads’ “This Must Be The Place” and a barnstorming finale take on Tom Petty’s “You Don’t Know How It Feels,” that reinvents the tune. Elsewhere, unpredictable, heavy duty instrumental “Mammoth” and originals “Dubby Conqueror” and “Searchin’” hint at good things to come from RoC. The album was mixed by engineer Pete Peloquin (Pixies, Dave Matthews, OAR) and co-mixed by the group’s live sound engineer Cooper Leafe, giving the set an immediacy and clarity that mixes the best traits of home listening and live sound.

Roots of Creation formed in 2000 while attending college together and began touring seriously in 2004. Today the band is comprised of original members Brett Wilson (lead vocals, guitar), Tal Pearson (keyboards) and Mike Chadinha (drums), and they are currently touring with bassist Brandon Downs and second guitarist Jay McGuinness. Based on the evidence of Live Vol. 2, this is a lethal live act with a promising drive and open minds. Can’t ask for more than that, particularly in a genre that often plays too heavily to tradition. In RoC’s hands, reggae is both relevant and exciting. (Dennis Cook)

Roots of Creation will play New Year’s Eve at Middle East Upstairs in Cambridge, MA, followed by a January 1st show at Crotched Mountain in Bennington, NH.

Here’s what Brett Wilson and Tal Pearson had to say to our inquiries.

Brett Wilson of RoC

Instrument(s) of choice:

Brett: Vocals / Guitar – DeArmond Starfire & Ibanez Artcore Hollowbody through a Fender Amp with lots of pedals

Tal: Keys. Right now having lots of fun with my Roland SH-201. It’s good for Whomping.

Nicknames:

Brett: “Bdubs” & “Wilson”

Tal: “The mantis”

1. Great music rarely happens withoutÂ…
Brett: Inspiration, originality, chemistry, passion, pain, and my buddies Sauza and Mary Jane.

Tal: Inspiration. Vibes. A feeling in the room.

2. The first album I bought wasÂ…
Brett: Ten cassette tapes for a penny from Columbia House. Favorite one was the Grateful Dead.

Tal: Dookie by Green Day

3. The last song or album to really flip my wig wasÂ…
Brett: Rebelution’s “Feelin’ Alright”

Tal: Mumford and Sons’ Sigh No More

4. When I was a kid I wanted to grow up to beÂ…
Brett: A movie reviewer or comic book illustrator.

Tal: Still not really sure.

5. My favorite sort of gig isÂ…
Brett: When we turn a club into an arena and a late night festival slot into a house party.

Tal: When you can feel the venue shaking because everyone is dancing so much! And I love it when the crowd is responsive to different things, like the music changing or the lights getting intense.

6. One thing I wish people knew about me isÂ…
Brett: Gingers DO have soul!

Tal: I really do have good taste in music!

7. I love the sound ofÂ…
Brett: Wookies WHOMPing

Tal: HUGE bass in the speakers!

8. One day I hope to make an album as fantastic asÂ…
Brett: Beck’s Midnight Vultures

Tal: Band of Horses’ Everything All The Time

9. The best meal I ever had on tour was atÂ…
Brett: Green Mountain College, all the vegetarian food and breakfast cereal you could ever want. Plus they recycle, compost, and are super nice.

Tal: Probably a giant breakfast somewhere with everything – eggs, bacon, French toast, sausage, home fries, soda, andÂ…American Cheese! Don’t remember where exactly.

10. I always find the coolest audiences inÂ…
Brett: Smaller cities, festivals and colleges, especially in MI, NC, CO, NH, and the West Coast

Tal: Music festivals.

11. The worst habit I’ve picked up being on the road all the time isÂ…
Brett: Pizza and a Smartphone addiction.

Tal: Sleeping til 1 pm.

12. The Beatles or the Stones? Por que?
Brett: The Stones. Beatles = great songs, but the Stones were bad ass and have raw energy – the epitome of rock ‘n’ roll. Plus, Mike Jagger kicked it with Peter Tosh and Keith Richard’s new roots reggae albums are great!

Tal: I’ve always gone with The Beatles on this one. I think their music is much more interesting, and that they had a greater influence on the sounds of rock and roll to come.

13. The craziest thing I ever saw wasÂ…
Brett: Tie between playing a guerilla set at Rothbury on shakedown to a literal sea of people and my picture in High Times – January 2011 issue on page 108 of the 420th issue – playing at Nateva with a SSDP shirt on.

Tal: The catering areas of big music festivals are always sort of surreal to me because you’re eating lunch next to people you’ve listened to and watched for a long time! I remember at Rothbury in 2009, casually eating some delicious food next to the guys from Soulive and then Willie Nelson happened to wander by. Surreal.
