Tea Leaf Green: Summer Shows Looking West Out June 8

NEW ALBUM OUT IN JUNE
APPEARANCES AT WAKARUSA, OYSTERFEST, ALL GOOD AND ROCKS OFF

Tea Leaf Green by Josh Miller

Tea Leaf Green has announced the release of their first studio album since 2008. Set to be released on June 8, Looking West will be available on iTunes, in the band’s online store, and at all of their upcoming shows.

“We’ve been waiting a long time to make this record,” says Trevor Garrod. “It’s almost as if we’ve loved these songs too much and were afraid to encase them forever in a studio album. These songs are messages in bottles washed up on foreign shores, alien transmissions from distant worlds, memories from our fading youth, and reminders of our endless and repetitious search for love and freedom.”

A special pre-order of the album is available now at the band’s online store. Everyone that pre-orders the album will automatically be registered to win a signed copy of the CD and one grand prize winner will receive a 4-pack of tickets to the headlining show of their choice and a private meet & greet with the band. They are also offering a special bundle sale option of a copy of the CD and one of the new TLG shirts for $25, or $22 for a digital download and t-shirt.

Tea Leaf Green will celebrate the release of Looking West on June 16th at Cafe du Nord in San Francisco. To mark the occasion, the band will be performing the album in its entirety with a stripped down acoustic set. Every ticket purchase will also include a free copy of the CD. For more info or to purchase your tickets to this special show, visit tealeafgreen.com.

Tea Leaf Green has also announced several new dates this summer, with more dates to be announced soon.

Nels Cline Singers Tour

HIGH SIERRA, PHILLY, NYC AND WILCO’S OWN FEST ON AGENDA

Nels Cline Singers

The Nels Cline Singers first planned tour dates to support their new release, Initiate (arriving April 13). These dates include the band’s first ever South American tour, an appearance at the High Sierra Music Festival, a full night at New York City’s (le) poisson rouge, a night in Philadelphia at Johnny Brenda’s, the Singers’ first ever Washington, D.C. date at The Black Cat, and finally, an appearance in August in Western Massachusetts at Mass MoCA as part of the Wilco-curated Solid Sound Festival. More tour dates, including a West Coast run will be announced at a later date.

Initiate, the Singers’ fourth release and Cline’s seventh as a leader for Cryptogramophone, approaches the concept of Yin and Yang with a series of firsts for both the group and its intrepid leader, slyly dubbed by JazzTimes as “The World’s Most Dangerous Guitarist.” Initiate, in a beautifully designed, six-panel digipak featuring Simon Norfolk’s gorgeous photographs of the world’s largest machine (the Large Hadron Collider at CERN) is Cline’s first double album, with its second disc culled from a September 2009 performance at Cafe du Nord in San Francisco, the Singers’ first live recording. Nels Cline Singers are Nels Cline (guitar), Scott Amendola (drums, electronics) and Devin Hoff (bass). Guests on the live disc include Yuka Honda (Cibo Matto), Greg Saunier (Deerhoof), John Dieterich (Deerhoof) and Satomi Matsuzaki (Deerhoof).

Nels will also make his Village Vanguard debut as a sideman with his longtime friend and musical associate violinist Jenny Scheinman [a JamBase fave along with Nels and his Singers] with her band Mischief and Mayhem July 13-18.

Construction of N. Stream gas pipeline begins

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev attended a ceremony near the Finnish border to celebrate the beginning of construction work on the Nord Stream gas pipeline. The 7.4-billion-euro (9.9 billion dollars) pipeline will from 2011 transport Russian gas to Europe, which the European Union hopes will help to ensure the bloc’s future energy security.

Patrick Watson Embarks On Longest U.S. Tour To Date

PATRICK WATSON & THE WOODEN ARMS’ MAY U.S. TOUR IS LONGEST TO DATE

Patrick Watson

This May, Patrick Watson &
The Wooden Arms – frontman Patrick Watson, guitarist Simon Angell, drummer
Robbie Kuster and bassist Mishka Stein – will set off on their longest U.S. tour to date, starting in
Brooklyn, ending at the Sasquatch! Festival, and playing their largest U.S. venues so far.

The Montreal-based band, whose 2009 album Wooden Arms (Secret City) set the stage for
breakout success, are, says Entertainment Weekly, “a beguiling, bewitching treat, like absinthe-laced
gumdrops: part rickety graveyard waltz, part hand-over-heart chamber pop, part avant-garde piano theater.”

“If Jeff Buckley, Syd
Barrett
, Bertolt Brecht, and Erik Satie were all to rise from the grave and team up with
Tom Waits, the results
might sound something like Patrick Watson & the Wooden Arms,” raves Guitar Player.

Those wanting to see what NPR calls “a brilliant band… performing vibrant, thoughtful and textured pop
music” will have 12 opportunities in May. But beware: as CNN warns, ” At a Patrick Watson concert, no
kitchen utensil is safe, no car parts are off limits, and nowhere is out of bounds.”

Nord Stream construction to start April 9

Construction of the long-anticipated Nord Stream gas pipeline from Russia to Germany via the Baltic will officially get underway on April 9. A spokeswoman for the Nord Stream consortium told the German Press Agency dpa there would be an official ceremony at the Russian town of Wyborg, on the border with Finland, to mark the construction start.

Nord Stream secures funding for Baltic pipeline

Nord Stream has secured 3.9 billion euros in financing allowing it to start building a pipeline to pump Russian natural gas to Europe under the Baltic Sea. The Financial Times reported on Tuesday that the funds will come from 26 banks with loan guarantees secured for 80% of the financing from the Italian and German credit agencies Sace and Hermes.

Alec Ounsworth Headline Tour

ALEC OUNSWORTH ANNOUNCES FIRST HEADLINING TOUR

Alec Ounsworth

Anti-Records is proud to announce Alec Ounsworth‘s first headlining tour ever. The dates will be in support of his critically acclaimed new albums: Mo Beauty and Flashy Python’s Skin and Bones. The tour begins with five shows opening for Cold War Kids and then Ounsworth and his band will do 18 headlining dates across the country.

About the band’s debut performance at 2009′s CMJ, Jon Pareles of the New York Times wrote that they “set aside the brittle Talking Heads tinges of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah for slightly more old-school approaches – meaty electric-piano funk with a New Orleans mambo flavor, bounding Rolling Stone guitar rock, and, from his band, guitar solos straddling blues jabs and post-punk dissonance.”

Ounsworth’s band is Matt Sutton, Peter Modavis, Brian Ashby and Jonas Oesterle. They will be playing songs from Mo Beauty, Skin and Bones, as well as Clap Your Hands Say Yeah’s catalog. Mo Beauty was recorded deep in the heart of musical New Orleans with an ensemble of local heavyweights including George Porter Jr. of The Meters and drummer Stanton Moore of Galactic, and was guided by veteran producer Steve Berlin (Los Lobos, Replacements). The album is a stunning union of powerful rhythms and imaginative arrangements in the service of evocative literary songwriting.

Surrounded By Ninjas: Disassociation Association

By: Dennis Cook

Electronic music can often have a disinfected, un-human tang to it, but some gifted hands are able to massage lifeblood into machines, merging technology and flesh & bone personality. Surrounded By Ninjas carry one back to the undulating roots of today’s electronica, finding the pulse inside the wires in the same artful way as the switched-on best of Jean-Michel Jarre, Tangerine Dream, and more contemporary blip manipulators like Morcheeba and Morgan Geist. Disassociation Association (Artdamaged Records) finds the Ninjas – Asher Fulero (Moog, Nord Piano, Ableton Live and more) and Joel Barber (turntables, samples) – stealthily refining their sound, where each piece rolls with a seductive forward motion and skin warming heat. Put more simply, stripping away the references, Disassociation Association is deeply pleasurable music, a bubble bath for your ears that makes the rest of you splash about.

From go this gets your head bobbing like a slightly stoned parakeet. Groove comes in many forms and SBN revels in exploring the vast corridors of rhythm, seasoning each stretch with artful scratching and smartly selected samples. One big aspect they have over many of their peers is a strong musical core. These aren’t just randomly selected boops ‘n’ blinks, these are real musicians who get the value of quality melodies, tone, and phrasing. Mostly instrumental, aside from a bookending pair of shoulda-been-trip-hop hits sung by Minda Stiles, the album flows so smoothly one might miss all the care put into each segment, including subtle, effective guest spots from Matt Butler (djembe), Scott Law (guitar) and Julee Avalone (flute). As Lisa once asked Wendy, “Is the water warm enough?” The answer with Disassociation Association is most assuredly, and one should find much to love inside these computer blue waters.

Trevor Hall 2010 Tour

TREVOR HALL TO EMBARK ON CROSS-COUNTRY HEADLINING TOUR IN 2010

Trevor Hall

After a series of sold out tours with Matisyahu, Colbie Caillat, and Michael Franti & Spearhead in 2009, Trevor Hall is hitting the road again – this time on his own six week headline run beginning January 27, 2010 in San Francisco.

Trevor’s self-titled debut on Vanguard Records was released last July and debuted on Billboard’s Heatseeker chart at #7. He toured the country three times over, was named one of the Top 20 New Artists in 2009 by Music Connection magazine, and received rave reviews for his intense live performances including this from Seattle Weekly: “I was blown away when he proceeded to perform chilling songs that sounded somewhere between Jack Johnson and Bob Marley,” and this from Metromix: “If you’ve never heard him, you need to. If you’ve seen him perform, come again. My heart is not so easily swayed, and Trevor Hall accomplished that feat in a matter of seconds. Imagine what he can do for a whole concert.”

Hall is a breath of fresh air in today’s music scene. His latest album, produced by Marshall Altman (Matt Nathanson, Kate Voegel, Marc Broussard), embodies a soulfulness, depth, and passion far beyond his 23 years. Trevor combines a unique musical mix of reggae and acoustic rock that serve as a landscape for his thought-provoking, inspiring lyrics.

Trevor infuses his songs with a deep sense of spirituality and social responsibility, as evidenced in the lead single “Unity,” written and performed with his friend Matisyahu. The two artists were on tour together when news of the Mumbai terrorist attacks hit the media. Trevor had made two trips to India, one a pilgrimage with two monks from a Southern California temple (whom he continues to live with), the second on his own in celebration of his 21st birthday. But the sectarian violence hit close to home for Matisyahu, who knew some of those who’d been murdered in a synagogue that had been targeted by the terrorists.

“We read about it, talked about it, meditated about it, and we started writing lyrics back and forth,” Trevor recalls. “On the external level, it’s obviously about the unity of all beliefs. We call it by many names, but there’s only one truth. But on a much deeper, internal level, it’s about the mystical place in your own heart where all these things merge into one thing. So the song works both ways.” Trevor also performed and co-wrote four songs that appear on Matisyahu’s new album, Light.

Amongst Trevor’s many charitable affiliations, he recently aligned himself with The Hunger Site, the Rainforest Action Network, and recently performed at an event for the Homeless Not Toothless Organization in Santa Monica, CA honoring Sharon Stone and Antwone Fisher.

Originally from South Carolina, Trevor Hall is most known for his songs “The Lime Tree” and “Other Ways,” which was featured on the Shrek the Third Soundtrack. He has been writing and performing since his early teens and touring since he was 17. Besides Trevor’s current Vanguard release, he also has released several independent recordings – This Is Blue, Alive & on the Road, Lace up Your Shoes, along with EP The Rascals Have Returned.

Renaissance for the Renaissance

The first in a summer series on hidden-gem museums

PARIS, London, Amsterdam and New York are only some of the cities that house treasure-filled museums that deserve to be higher up on any “must see” list. Over the course of the summer, this column will highlight more of these gems, beginning with one of France’s best-kept secrets: the National Museum of the Renaissance at the Chateau d’Ecouen.

The museum is only 20 minutes from the Gare du Nord in Paris; entry is included in that city’s museum pass. Even so, it remains obscure, as attendance figures suggest: in 2005, Ecouen had only 5,000 visitors. The number last year reached 85,000, but this remains a low figure for a museum of Ecouen’s calibre. The Musee de Cluny in Paris, for example, which is France’s National Museum of the Middle Ages, had almost 400,000 last year. (New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art drew 4m.) …
