Lollapalooza Chile: The Killers, JaneÂ’s, Kanye, Fatboy

CHICAGO FEST GOES TO SOUTH AMERICA

The Killers

The lineup for the inaugural Lollapalooze Chile has been announced. 50-plus acts will perform on five stages at the two-day festival set to happen Saturday, April 2 and Sunday, April 3 in O’Higgins Park, Santiago, Chile.

“The job we did to gather these artists for 2011 was remarkable,” says fest co-organizer Perry Farrell. “Imagine gathering 60 artists while the contract ink is still wet. We put it together at a record pace as we had four months. We did not want to come to Chile with a lineup that was anything other than world-class, and my partners Marc Geiger of WME and Charles Attal of C3 have been absolutely integral to Lollapalooza Chile launching in 2011. Our selections are very animated, with much diversity. There is Chilean talent in the mix. Now that the lineup is announced here, we are going back to Chile to work on the other aspects of the festival. Our ambition is to plant a very strong seed in Chile, one that will grow over the years, and provide Santiago with an event for the ages.”

Available now for the festival are general two-day passes for $110 presale, $136 then $152; Lolla Lounge two-day VIP passes for $320 presale then $380; And beginning February 11, general admission single day tickets for $72 presale then $84 and VIP passes for $240. One Ford, two VWs

Post-Detroit, a question arises. On one hand we have Alan Mulally and his One Ford policy otherwise known as ‘if it’s been designed right overseas (see Fiesta, Focus, C-Max) don’t tinker with it for the US (see Gen 1 Focus and successors on same platform; Mondeo-based Contour/Mystique)’.

We’ll also see this applied in reverse to larger cars when the Australian Falcon switches to front-drive and shares a platform with the bigger cars designed in and for North America.

On the other hand, there’s VW, which has shunned its new European Passat for a unique, larger model for, and built in, the US.

So, whose approach is right?

We’ve been here before, of course, with Japanese Toyota Camrys widened for the US and quite different Honda Accords for Japan, Europe and the US. VW is only the latest to make a mid-size car unique for the US though Toyota and Honda also sold their ‘wide’ Camry and Accords in other markets.

Promoters Promise Cheaper Tickets in 2011

PROMOTERS TO SELL MORE MERCHANDISE TO MAKE UP FOR LOST REVENUE

ZZ Top

Pollstar is reporting
that concert promoters are planning to make shows more affordable in 2011, after high ticket prices caused low
attendance throughout the past year. Promoters say they will push the sale of t-shirts and other merchandise to
make up for the lost revenue.

Acts such as ZZ Top plan on selling
tickets for as little as $10. “It’s time to give the value back,” said band manager Carl Stubner, “We’ll find
other
ways to make money.”

Meanwhile, not everybody will bring down their prices. Neil Diamond, for example, says that his
large scale
production prevents him from doing so. “As the shows get bigger, the expenses get
bigger, so it’s got to be translated somehow to the ticket price. If I just used the guitar it’d be a lot simpler, but then
I’d
have to put 50 people out of work.”

According to Pollstar, ticket prices in North America rose from an average of $26 in 1996 to $67 in 2008. That
number does not include order processing and convenience charges. When
promoters raised prices again, concert attendance dropped by 12% in the first half of 2010, in comparison to the
same period of time a year ago.

Promoters have promised that cheaper options will be available in 2011. “We know that if you lower the price, they’ll
come,” Live Nation CEO Michael Rapino told investors in November.

Here is the official message from the band:

Happy Holidays!

2010 has been a great year, but it has not been without its challenges. And no matter what gets dealt to us at this
point, we know that we are going to get through it, in no small part due to the support our fans have shown us.
Throughout the year, we have been forced to respond to adversity with calm and strength. We always try to take
lemons and make lemonade. In the process, we have made new friends, and found out how much we are capable of
during times of duress.

Well if we hadn’t been through enough, last night we received a call from Allen’s father. Yesterday, Allen suffered a
serious asthma attack and was hospitalized. He will be fine, but unfortunately will not be released from the hospital
until Tuesday. Fortunately, his doctors have cleared him to play on December 30 and 31. Our thoughts are with Allen
and his family.

For tomorrow, Tuesday, and Wednesday, we are putting together an amazing line-up with drummers that we have
played with in other projects throughout the years. We are blessed to have such a strong network of amazing
drummers to call on. Check it out:

Tomorrow, we are honored to welcome Mike Greenfield from Lotus. This will be the fourth time Mike plays a show
with us, and they are always classic sets.

On Tuesday, we’ll be joined by two of the hottest drummers in North America. We are proud to welcome Adam Deitch
from Break Science and Pretty Lights. As well we are excited to be joined by Darren Shearer from the New Deal.

On Wednesday we are being joined by our old friend, Dr. Sam Altman.

We’re not sure what else to really say, other than to keep Allen in your thoughts and prayers and we promise to
deliver you wonderful, well thought-out shows while we are waiting for our brother to get back up here and join us
for the new year.

Thank you so much for your support. We can’t wait to see you all tomorrow.
