SMRT cut to Underperform by CIMB with $1.95 target

CIMB downgrades SMRT (S53.SG) to Underperform from Neutral, cuts target price to $1.95 from $2.31 after lowering FY12-13 EPS estimates by 3%-4%, factoring in higher capex assumptions, according to Dow Jones.

“We remain wary of losses on the Circle Line with the opening of more stations in 2011, and margin pressure from rising fuel and electricity costs,” says CIMB.

Research house says Circle Line may take four years to break even vs three years for North-East Line, run by rival ComfortDelgro’s (C52.SG) SBS Transit (S61.SG) unit.

Notes North-East Line ridership supported by large population catchment, giving it edge over Circle Line. Shares off 1.0% at $2.07.

Scaring The Children :: 10.09.09 :: Brooklyn

Scaring the Children, the trio formed by Bob Weir in the mid ’90s right after Jerry Garcia passed, consisted of Rob Wasserman on bass and Jay Lane on drums. This trio evolved into what is now Weir’s current band, RatDog. Jay Lane stayed with RatDog, while Wasserman continued on to do work with the likes of Lou Reed, Van Morrison and Elvis Costello. This reunion at Brooklyn Bowl, one of the nation’s best new music venues, was another shot of high grade American rock into the heart of Williamsburg.

The shirts on the security guards read “welcome,” and the acoustics are exceptional. The sound is loud and clear, while it is still possible to hear the person next to you speak. The venue is directly next door to Brooklyn Brewery and has all of their beer on tap. I had their Belgian wheat beer, which was so good I will never be able to drink Blue Moon again. As the Dead fans descended upon the posh neighborhood of Williamsburg, the locals were certainly in the minority. Shady behavior was kept to a minimum, partly due to proper planning in the venue’s layout. There is an outside area were the community can meet up, talk and share but no reentry once someone leaves. This lets people enjoy being outside in front of the venue, while limiting certain forms of questionable profiteering that can go on in the street.

The trio took the stage a little late due to the Yankees game. Weir came out with an acoustic and Wasserman with his upright bass. They opened with Bob Dylan‘s “Maggie’s Farm,” and then nailed The Beatles’ “Blackbird.” “Desolation Row” was the second Dylan song of the night and lent itself well to Weir’s dramatic vocals. Weir then switched from his acoustic to a hollow body, tobacco sunburst and sang Dylan’s classic “When I Paint My Masterpiece.” Though this is an old favorite, this version seemed special and sent a strong emotional feeling throughout the crowd.

Bob Weir – Scaring The Children :: 10.09

The second set included another Beatles cover and the trio was joined by Joe Russo on the drums for the rest of the night. Russo is a Brooklyn local and the man behind some of the best collaborations in live music right now. An energetic, jazz powerhouse, Russo is the backbeat of Weir’s Furthur project, where he plays with Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh. The musicians closed with the Dead’s rocking version of the traditional “Going Down the Road Feeling Bad.” The jam was high energy, as usual, and had the entire crowd singing along. Weir played his signature bluesy licks and pulled off a solid solo during the climax. Taking a full throttle solo is rare for the largely rhythm guitarist, but he nailed it on this occasion.

Photographer Robert Chapman is a machine. He can go for hours without sleep to serve the music. After the show Chapman suggested we go to Sullivan Hall to hear Bonerama, who are in the midst of a Friday residency. There were some interesting guests on the bill, including Eric Krasno, Nigel Hall and The Colin Brown Band. I only first heard of Bonerama this year from a flier for the Bear Creek Music Festival. They are a New Orleans band who have actually been around for some time and are currently touring the North East.

Krasno was playing out of a Marshal Stack on a Gibson that looked very similar to Weir’s semi-acoustic, but it was a solid body. I arrived just in time to see Nigel Hall and Krasno sitting in with Bonerama, along with members of the Colin Brown Band and RatDog’s saxophonist Kenny Brooks, who was playing a tiny saxophone. They played an instrumental of The Beatles’ “Get Back,” one of Krasno’s signature tunes, and a rendition of The Allman Brothers‘ “Whipping Post.” The four horns from Bonerama played the part of what would be Gregg Allman’s passionate vocals, with the brass set loose in the New Orleans style.

Heading out of Sullivan Hall with a peace sign and star stamped on my hand, I pondered the evening and how I got into this mess. The arrival of Brooklyn Bowl on the scene is certainly a game changer for the musical topography of Brooklyn, and as goes NYC so does the country. Perhaps with The Bowl fortifying good music in the city, improvisational rock will regain its proper place in the hearts and minds of urban Americans everywhere.

Government welcomes Nissan jobs

Sunderland visit comes as government names north-east as Britain’s second low-carbon economic area

Carmaker Nissan has pledged to invest more than £200m in a new rechargeable battery factory in Sunderland boosting the north-east of England’s drive to become a leading centre for green technology.

The region hopes to swap a legacy of shipbuilding, steam engines and coalmining for a pioneering role in the manufacture of electric cars and lorries.

Nissan’s announcement of plans for a rechargeable lithium-ion battery plant was accompanied by Gordon Brown’s confirmation that the government is making the north-east the UK’s Low Carbon Economic Area specialising in “ultra-low carbon vehicles.”

Against a backdrop of job losses and unrelenting uncertainty for workers at UK car factories, the prime minister hailed Nissan’s new battery plant as a step towards economic recovery.

He sought to raise hopes the Japanese company could choose its north-east base for a new European green car operation over a rival facility in Spain.

“Nissan’s investment in a new battery plant and its hope to start producing electric vehicles here in Sunderland is great news for the local economy, creating up to 350 direct jobs and creating and safeguarding hundreds more in the associated supply chain,” said Brown.

“Sunderland could now be a strong contender to produce electric vehicles for Nissan in Europe, and we will continue to work with Nissan to ensure this happens.”

Visiting Nissan’s Sunderland plant, Business Secretary Peter Mandelson said the north-east was already a specialised region for green cars.

The region’s designation as a Low Carbon Economic Area will mean establishing a training centre to teach the manufacture and repair of green cars, creating a research and development hub which collates work from five universities on using low carbon cars and opening a test track to try out new vehicles.

The north-east is the second such “economic area” to be created by the government after the South West of England – a centre of marine and tidal energy schemes.

Mandelson hopes the north-east green cars project will attract foreign investment and secure the UK’s place as “a global leader in high-tech manufacturing and automotive industries.”

Local government officials hailed the Low Carbon initiative as potentially creating 10,000 jobs over five years – a huge morale boost to an area hit by the rapid decline of its manufacturing industry and wider economic turmoil.

Margaret Fay, chairman of the One North East regional development agency drew parallels with the north-east’s industrial heyday.

“The first steam engines came from the north-east, we are good at firsts. We were the centre of excellence all those years ago with Stephenson and the Rocket. It’s like history repeating itself for the next generation.”

“We see this as the next iteration of the north-east economy. We have been through the very heavy industries of shipbuilding, steel, coalmining etc… Clearly manufacturing is at the heart of what we have always done in the region and this takes us back into what really are our core competencies. But this is manufacturing for the future.”

The agency has aspirations to turn the north-east into Britain’s green car training centre as demand rises for mechanics able to fix a new breed of electric vehicles.

“The training centre will go right from basic training, through apprenticeships, right up to masters and PhD’s,” said Fay.

The planned research and development centre will look into aspects of electric cars such as how far they can travel between charges.

AA president Edmund King says his group will feed its research into both the training and research centres.

“It was important to get a motoring organisation involved because electric vehicles will only be successful if consumers use them, understand them and trust them,” said King.

He quotes AA research suggesting almost two-thirds of drivers would consider buying a more fuel efficient car. Drivers in the North East and Northern Ireland were most likely to consider buying a green car.

But others are more sceptical that electric cars are worthy of such “green” government investment. Stephen Glaister director of the RAC Foundation points out the power to charge batteries will most likely be generated from coal or gas. “I think it is entirely unclear whether electric cars have anything to offer.”

“This may be about being seen to do something, it may be about creating new jobs, but I imagine it’s very risky in terms of the particular technology they are going into. There’s a long history of governments supporting different bits of the motor industry and having them fail.”

North-eastern company Smith Electric Vehicles, the world’s largest manufacturer of electric commercial vehicles, has questions about the government’s green car plans for other reasons.

Managing director Geoff Allison was puzzled as to why the government was not looking at manufacturers’ more urgent needs.

“Here today, now, we need investment. We have got electric vehicles, we need volume orders, we need subsidies. We need incentive from the government to help us get commercial vehicles on the road quicker. “In Europe they are all way ahead of us in terms of acceptability of electric vehicles.”

If we aren’t given support, the French will overtake us. You won’t be buying a British built electric vehicle, you’ll be buying a French one,” he says

Green light given for four ecotowns

Towns to tackle Britain’s housing shortage while minimising damage to the environment by showcasing energy efficient homes and green transport

The government today gave the go-ahead for the construction of four eco-towns, offering 10,000 homes overall, which, it hopes, will showcase environmentally friendly living in the UK.

The settlements, to be built by 2016, will include the latest in energy efficiency measures, streets with charging points for electric cars and numerous cycle routes as well as easy access to public transport.

The locations are Whitehill Borden in Hampshire, the China Clay Community at St Austell, Cornwall, Rackheath in Norfolk and north-west Bicester, in Oxfordshire. Each site will be allocated a share of £60m for their “green” infrastructure.

The towns are designed to tackle Britain’s housing shortage while minimising damage to the environment – more than a quarter of the UK’s CO2 emissions come from energy use in houses.

Launching the initiative Gordon Brown said earlier today: “Eco-towns will help to relieve the shortage of affordable homes to rent and buy, and minimise the effects of climate change on a major scale. They will provide modern homes with lower energy bills, energy efficient offices and brand-new schools, community centres and services.”

But eco-towns have been criticised ever since Brown announced his plan to build up to 100,000 homes in five green towns, soon after succeeding Tony Blair as prime minister in 2007.

The Campaign to Protect Rural England wanted the government to scale back the programme to one or two showcase towns, arguing that officials should concentrate on refurbishing existing properties and redeveloping derelict brownfield sites as well as bring 800,000 empty homes in England back to use.

The eco-towns will still require planning permission and could face opposition from residents anxious about the impact on rural areas.

The housing minister John Healey said: “I recognise that the proposals can raise strong opinions, but climate change threatens us all and with our commitment to the eco-towns we are taking steps to meet this challenge and help build more affordable housing.”

He said Britain was leading the world in designing zero-carbon buildings. “One in three of Britain’s homes in 2050 will be built between now and then, so we have to set clear, green, standards for the future. I am confirming that all new homes from 2016 will have to meet a tough zero-carbon standard, so they are cleaner, greener and cheaper to run.”

In addition to the four eco-towns, a further two, Rossington, in South Yorkshire and North-East Elsenham, Essex, are on the cards for the scheme’s second wave. The government wants up to 10 eco-towns completed or under way by 2020.

Friends of the Earth’s executive director, Andy Atkins, welcomed the plans. But he said: “The bigger challenge is to ensure that all new housing is built to the highest environmental standards. Ministers must ensure that all the two million homes that they plan to build across the country are truly green and help meet UK targets for tackling climate change.”

Grant Shapps, the Tories’ housing spokesperson and MP for Welwyn Hatfield, dismissed eco-towns as a gimmick. “Underneath the thick layers of greenwash many of these schemes are unsustainable, unviable and unpopular, but Gordon Brown wants to impose them from Whitehall irrespective of local opinion.”

John Alker, of the UK Green Building Council, said that although eco-towns had had a rough ride, the idea behind them was sound. “The current economic climate is very challenging for new house building in the short-term, but zero carbon homes, sustainable transport, a robust local economy and access to green space are all vital ingredients of new places fit for the 21st century.

He added: “The eco-towns brand has taken a battering, but if these developments go through the interrogation of a proper planning process, are linked to existing communities, have local support and are built to the very highest environmental standards, then it can only be a good thing. Building green homes on a large scale … will also reduce the green cost premium and help provide a blueprint for the homes of the future.”

Inside an eco town…

• Community-scale heat sources, possibly using combined heat and power plants
• Charging points for electric cars
• All homes within 10 minutes walk of frequent public transport and everyday services
• Parks, playgrounds and gardens to make up 40% of towns
• Individual homes must achieve 70% carbon savings above current building regulations in terms of heating, hot water and lighting
• Zero-carbon buildings including shops, restaurants and schools
• Ensuring a minimum of one job per house can be reached by walking, cycling or public transport to reduce dependence on the car
• Car journeys to make up less than half of all journeys
• Locating homes within ten minutes walk of frequent public transport and everyday neighbourhood services
• Homes fitted with smart meters and solar and wind generation. Residents will be able to control the heat and ventilation of their homes at the touch of a button and sell their surplus energy into the grid

Jill Sobule: My Funeral and Memorial Service

Michael Jackson’s memorial made me realize that not only do I need to write up a will, but I also need to plan my own memorial service and tribute for when that inevitable time comes.
