UN SG on “delicate north”

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon says the situation in Kosovo is overall relatively peaceful, but that the political situation in the north is very delicate. In his latest report to the UN Security Council, available for download here, Ban added that he had called on EU Security and Foreign Policies Chief Catherine Ashton to investigate all the remaining challenges related to Kosovo.

The north of Kosovo has been in focus lately, this time because of contradictory statements, rather than ethnic tensions.
This week, media in PriÅ¡tina and Belgrade quoted the top U.S. diplomatic envoy in Kosovo, Christopher Dell, as saying that the north could be granted “autonomy”.

Kosovo Albanian PM Hashim Thaci’s advisor Dukadjin Gorani said that they were “ready to offer a special status to Serbs in the north”.
Gorani said that PriÅ¡tina wants to talk with Belgrade in order to find a “solution of the Serbs in northern Kosovo, but within the borders of Kosovoâ€.

North Korea warns of nuclear “sacred war”

North Korea says it will use its “nuclear deterrent” in response to joint US-South Korean military exercises this weekend. Pyongyang was ready to launch a “retaliatory sacred war” at any time, the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said.

FALL TOUR KICKS OFF AUGUST 6 IN VANCOUVER
Australia’s Karnivool are
currently wrapping up their sold out “New Day Tour” in Australia and are thrilled to announce that they’ll be
returning stateside next month for the North American leg. Named after the eight-minute epic from their recently
released full-length Sound Awake, the “New Day Tour” will commence August 6 in Vancouver
before looping the U.S. and ending in Los Angeles on September 13. Tampa’s Tides of Man will open for most of
the dates.
“It’s time for a good ol’ North American road trip again,” attests guitarist Drew Goddard. “Look for a big white van
full of weird Aussies with bad hair and guitars pulling up at a town near you.”

The U.S. believes that the Kosovo Albanian government has a “sovereign right” to extend its jurisdiction to the north, says a former UN official.
U.S. diplomat Gerard Gallucci, who served in the volatile, predominantly Serb part of the province as UNMIK regional chief, told Belgrade daily Politika that his country” thus gives the green light to the Kosovo institutions and Albanian extremists to take a unilateral action in northern Kosovo”.

EULEX deputy chief Roy Reeve stated that EULEX will not send its special forces to northern Kosovo, Belgrade-based daily VeÄernje Novosti reported on Monday. Kosovo Albanian interim government representatives said previously that they would send “special police units” to northern, Serb parts of Kosovo, and that they had an agreement with the EU mission that enabled them to do so.
NATO commander: Isolated incidents in north

U.S. Admiral Mark Fitzgerald says that recent violent acts in northern Kosovska Mitrovica were all “isolated incidents”. The incidents included an explosion during a peaceful Serb protest in which one person was killed and 11 injured, as well as the shooting of a Kosovo assembly member that followed.

K. Ministry official on situation in north

Ministry for Kosovo State Secretary Oliver Ivanović says the situation in northern Kosovska Mitrovica is now stable.
However he added that the people were “distraught” after Kosovo Albanian government Interior Minister Bajram Rexhepi made his “threats”, which Ivanović believes should neither be dismissed nor overemphasized.

Officials in northern Afghanistan say at least 11 police and a district governor have been killed in three separate attacks across the region. Authorities said Sunday that at least six police officers died late Saturday when Taliban militants stormed a police post in northern Kunduz province.

KFOR Commander Markus Bentler has stated that NATO is very concerned over the situation in northern Kosovo. “There is no positive development and we call upon all citizens to show restraint from any violent acts,” Bentler said.
U.S. envoy denies north comments
The ambassador of the United States to PriÅ¡tina has denied that he said Hashim Thaci was “prepared to offer to the north of Kosovo a kind of autonomy”.
According to the Albanian language media reports in Priština earlier today, Christopher Dell said this could be modeled after autonomies implemented in regions of Belgium, Austria and other Western European countries.
