EULEX says north is “dangerous zone”

Kosovo Albanian Interior Minister Bajram Redzepi urged the EULEX mission to withdraw from northern Kosovo, after EULEX declared this area a dangerous zone.
“The situation in (Kosovska) Mitrovica has not changed, and EULEX is not able to operate effectively. Therefore, it should withdraw and let KFOR and the Kosovo police (KPS) safeguard the security,” said Redzepi, according to Albanian language media reports in PriÅ¡tina.

Suspension lifted for Serb KPS member

A Serb man employed by the Kosovo police, KPS, in Zvečan, northern Kosovo, will return to work, said reports. Nenad Đurić was suspended after he failed to carry out a decision made by the Kosovo Albanian authorities in Priština to confiscate MUP-issued license plates for towns in Kosovo.

Serb officials in message to local KPS

Serbian officials in northern Kosovo have called on members of the Kosovo police, KPS, not to carry out “warped decisions of the Kosovo (Albanian) government”. They were also asked to “decide to which nation and which state they belong”.

K. Serbs in warning over license plates

The head of the Kosovska Mitrovica District and president of Serb municipalities in northern Kosovo met on Monday in Kosovska Mitrovica. They announced they would terminate all kinds of cooperation with the Kosovo police, KPS, if the police in the province kept seizing new Serbian vehicle registration plates.

Kosovo police seize new license plates

Members of the Kosovo police (KPS) in northern Kosovo on Thursday seized a pair of new license plates issued by authorities in Belgrade. Thus, they “began implementing a regulation of the Kosovo Ministry of Internal Affairs prohibiting movement of vehicles with new license plates issued by the Serbian Interior Ministry (MUP) which have the first letters of Kosovo cities inscribed on them”, said reports.

Christmas marked in towns in Kosovo

The central celebration of Christmas Eve in Kosovo and Metohija was held in the St. Demetrios Church in Kosovska Mitrovica, northern Kosovo. Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Božidar Đelić, who attended the celebration, pointed out that 2011 will be the year of Serbia’s strong efforts aimed at European integration and fight for Kosovo.

An 18-year-old girl was hit by a stray bullet in Zvečan, northern Kosovo, on Thursday night. She is currently receiving treatment in Kosovska Mitrovica.

EULEX prepares “special unit in for north”

EULEX Spokesman Hanns-Christian Klasing said on Tuesday that the mission had formed a special police unit to be in charge of northern Kosovo. Klasing told Tanjug that, although the unit had been formed in November, the recruiting of the staff was still underway.

An explosive device was thrown at the house of a Serb family in Zvečan, northern Kosovo, early on Monday. There were no injuries in the incident, Kosovo police, KPS, regional spokesperson Besim Hoti told Tanjug.

“EULEX will not take north by force”

EULEX head Xavier Bout de Marnhac has said that the EU mission in Kosovo does not plan to take control over northern Kosovo by force. He however reiterated that the rule of law and more visible presence of international institutions has to be established in the predominantly Serb area.
