Kosovo Albanian killed in northern Mitrovica

Kosovo Albanian Hakif Mehmeti was shot dead in the northern part of Kosovska Mitrovica late on Tuesday. Regional spokesman of the Kosovo Police Service Besim Hoti told the Tanjug news agency that Mehmeti was shot near his house in the Mikronaselje district and that he had died in the hospital in northern Mitrovica from the sustained injuries.

Serbs reiterate opposition to “strategy for north”

Kosovo Serb officials oppose the Kosovo Albanian government’s plan for integrating the northern part of Kosovo. At the same time, in PriÅ¡tina, preparations are under way to create a new municipality, that of “Northern Mitrovica”, where Serbs are predominant.

Kosovo Albanian government, international missions and diplomats are considering local elections in the northern part of Kosovska Mitrovica in September 2010. Albanian language daily Koha Ditore wrote on Tuesday that ambassadors of the U.S., France, Germany, Great Britain and Italy, the International Civilian Office (ICO) and the EU mission have yet to reach an agreement on the date of the local elections for the setting up of the “new municipality of northern Mitrovica”.

Thaci on strategy in north Kosovo

Hashim Thaci said that the goal of the government’s new strategy is to improve the economic situation in northern Kosovo and strengthen its sovereignty. “The strategy has four main fields: strengthening the rule of law on the entire territory of Kosovo, decentralization and the formation of new municipalities in northern Mitrovica, the issue of municipal governments in the three northern municipalities (Leposavić, Zvečane and Zubin Potok), improving the social-economic situation in this part of Kosovo,” he said.
