Best Buy will begin selling a new line of Samsung notebooks March 7. Different options for the three models include a variety of screen sizes, Intel iCore 5 processors, Nvidia GeForce graphics cards and Blu-ray drives.

HP Unveils New ProBook Notebooks and EliteBook Business Tablets

Hewlett-Packard on March 1 introduced its new ProBook S-series (for Standard) of notebook computers, aimed at the price-conscious midrange and SMB markets. The new machines, which come in display size choices of 12.1-inch, 13.3-inch, 14-inch, 15.6-inch and 17.3-inch, are all powered by Intel dual core processors and are preinstalled with Windows 7, Vista or FreeDOS. The 12.1-inch EliteBook 2540p notebook starts at $719 with a basic feature set, but the prices can be as much as twice that depending upon which options you pick. In addition to high-performance options of 4GB to 8GB of RAM and 250GB to 320GB storage, the new HP laptops feature new matte-brushed aluminum shells with color descriptions that include Bordeaux for a faintly garnet-colored model and Caviar, which looks an awful lot like charcoal black. Lenovo is rolling out its newest PCs at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, demonstrating in the process that the company is expanding its customer scope in 2010. Lenovo executives suggested that more and more enterprise workers are using their workplace laptops and netbooks for more personal, everyday functions; in keeping with that idea, many of Lenovo’s latest devices embrace a more consumer-oriented style, with an emphasis on sleek design, color choice and optimized access to Web widgets such as Amazon.com’s MP3 store.

Lenovo’s 2010 lineup focuses on both powerful workstation devices and netbooks. Lenovo Adds Multitouch Features to its ThinkPad X200, T400s Notebooks

On Sept. 15, Lenovo began detailing the new multitouch capabilities of its ThinkPad X200 tablet PC and its ThinkPad T400s laptop. The multitouch screens of both machines are the work of Lenovo engineers and the manufacturers that make the displays. In addition, Lenovo is looking to take advantage of some of the features of Microsoft’s Windows 7 OS with a new application called Simple Tap. This technology lets users create shortcuts on the screen that can help turn the laptops off or quickly launch an application. Worldwide shipments of netbook PCs are expected to reach nearly 33 million units in 2009, according to a new report. While netbooks year-to-year growth is likely to be just shy of 100 percent, predicted year-to-year growth for full-sized notebooks is likely to fall flat.
