President Tadić visits town of Novi Pazar

Serbian President Boris Tadić is today visiting the town of Novi Pazar in Serbia’s RaÅ¡ka District (Sandžak region).
He arrived there accompanied by two Bosniak ministers in the Serbian government, Rasim Ljajić and Sulejman Ugljanin.

Novi Pazar not to be underestimated

The Serbian Army (VS) Chief of General Staff Lt. Gen. Miloje Miletić said that the situation in Novi Pazar should not be underestimated or exaggerated. “Individual incidents cannot endanger the stability of the state, it is only a warning that the problem needs to be solved in a way that we want to solve it in,” Miletić said.

IM for reasonable solution in Novi Pazar

Interior Minister Ivica Dačić that a reasonable solution must be found for the tense situation among Bosniaks in Novi Pazar. He said that a solution is needed that does not require police involvement.

Violence at protest in Novi Pazar

Several people were injured as Bosniak protesters in Novi Pazar through stones at police officers securing the 1,500 strong protest on Saturday. The general council of the Islamic Community in Serbia, led by Muamer Zukorlić, announced Saturday that the confiscation of a plot of land in Novi Pazar, southwestern Serbia, which was supposedly received as endowment represented a “culmination of violence, discrimination and disrespect for basic Muslim rights,” and demanded a police withdrawal.

Mufti’s security man assaults school principal

Police in the town of Novi Pazar have arrested a man identified as Elvedin T., suspected of assaulting an elementary school principal. The suspect, who will face charges of attacking an official person while they were performing their duties, has been described as a member of the “first ring of security” for Islamic Community in Serbia leader Mufti Muamer Zukorlić.

Gendarmes intervene in land dispute

Officers of MUP’s Gendarmerie unit intervened today to reclaim a disputed plot of land in the town of Novi Pazar, in southwestern Serbia. The city administration plans to build a preschool facility there, but members of the Islamic Community in Serbia were at the site yesterday to block the works.

Serbian flag torched in Novi Pazar

Police in Novi Pazar have arrested three persons suspected of torching the state flag of Serbia. The suspects were identified as 18 year-old Enes K., and Almir L. and Ferid S., both 19 years old.

Minors arrested in Novi Pazar bus attack

Novi Pazar police arrested four minors suspected of throwing rocks at a bus full of tourists passing through the city on Sunday.

The suspects are all between the ages of 13 and 16.

Drug abuse on rise in south

Police stated that there are several thousand young people using drugs regularly in the southern city of Novi Pazar. Police added that the number of people using drugs on a less regular basis is much larger.

Turkish cultural center opens in N. Pazar

Serbian President Boris Tadić and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Erdogan opened a Turkish cultural center in Novi Pazar on Monday. Novi Pazar is the largest town in Serba’s southwestern Sandžak region, that has a majority Muslim population.

Ambassador opens pedestrian zone in Novi Pazar

U.S. Ambassador to Serbia Mary Warlick opened a pedestrian zone in the center of the southwestern city of Novi Pazar on Friday. The construction of the zone was supported by USAID, which provided around USD 100,000 for the project.

Striker hammers nail into own hand

A striking worker of the Iskra Metal company from the town of Novi Pazar has hammered a nail into his own hand in order to bring attention to his protest. The man was identified as Halko DruÅ¡tinac. He was involved in a strike of the company’s disabled workers which started 115 days ago.

EU ambassadors visit Novi Sad

Ambassadors from EU countries and the EU Delegation to Serbia expressed their support in Novi Sad today for Serbia’s EU integration. They also voiced support for further investments in the country.

Novi Sad prison protests held

Novi Sad prisoners protested on Saturday, demanding to talk with Prison Administration officials and representatives of the Appeals Court. According to Zorana Vučićević, the media relations advisor of the Administration for Criminal Sanctions, the prisoners were promised that their case processes will be work on more quickly.

Anniversary of WW2 Novi Sad massacre

The 68th anniversary of the Novi Sad Raid was marked today, remembering more than 1,300 Serbs, Jews and Romas massacred by Hungarian fascists. Delegations of the Vojvodina assembly, the city of Novi Sad and several political parties placed wreaths at the memorial on the banks of the Danube River.

Three injured in botched robbery

Three persons were shot and injured in Novi Pazar last night during an attempt to rob a jewelry store in this southwestern Serbian town. Serbian police (MUP) in Novi Pazar confirmed that the store’s owner, a passer-by and a policeman were wounded.

Slovak President visits Novi Sad

Slovak President Ivan Gašparovič will be in Novi Sad during the second day of his visit to Serbia. He was greeted by the President of the Vojvodina Executive Council Bojan Pajtić, after which they held a half-hour meeting behind closed doors.

Body found on side of road

Serbian police (MUP) in Novi Pazar say that they found a dead body on the side of the Novi Pazar-Sjenica road. The victim was identified as 62-year-old H.K.

Novi Pazar mayor dismissed

Mirsad Đerlek was dismissed yesterday as Novi Pazar mayor by the local assembly, and replaced by Meho Mahmutović. The Novi Pazar City Council called on the Finance Ministry to order an investigation of Đerlek’s activitie while mayor, on suspicion that he committed a “series of serious financial abuses.”

N. Pazar man causes panic in Montenegro

A Novi Pazar, southwestern Serbia, native has brought panic to the Montenegrin towns of Podgorica and Rožaje, reports say. The man, identified as Seid Š., is a fugitive from Serbian police.
