Adventus unit terminates acquisition of New Zealand coal mine

Adventus Holdings unit Adventus NZ says it is terminating a sale and purchase agreement signed with Medha International.

This was because less than 8 million tonnes of recoverable coal reserves were found by its geologists as agreed upon under the deal.

Adventus says it is taking steps to recover the deposit of US$1 million ($1.3 million).

Stamford Land’s 1H net profit after tax soars to $44.3m on favourable forex rate

Stamford Land Corporation, the operator of luxury hotels and developer of residential and commercial properties, says profit after tax increased 329.8% to $44.3 million for the half year ended 30 September 2010 (1HFY2011) from $10.3 million in 1HFY2010.

This was due to the favourable exchange rate for FY 2011 and fair value gains on investment properties. Hotels in Australia continue to perform strongly, with operating results for 2HFY2011 expected to be better than 1HFY2011.

Revenue fell slightly to $110.7 million in 1H11 from $111.0 million in 1H10.

NTA per share increased to $0.53 due to stronger A$ and NZ$ for investments in hotels and properties, with hotels conservatively valued at historical cost less depreciation.

A fair value gain of $47.3 million was recognised for the completion of Dynons Plaza in Perth.

GPS voices don’t sound as “Kiwi” as they should

As a native of New Zealand, this story in an email today caught my eye. Apparently some Kiwis don’t think TomTom’s current ‘NZ’ voices sound as authentic as they should.

Neither do I; I have one of TT’s earliest ‘Go’ models and, though it has guided me flawlessly to many destinations in the UK, Europe and Canada, I don’t reckon the Kiwi accent on it is genuine, nor is the Australian version. So I stick to the UK or US voices while resisting regular pleas from the company to pay to download Homer Simpson.

TomTom announced a competition this week to find “the voice of New Zealand” for its vehicle navigation tool and some of the entries so far are classic, if almost incomprehensible to foreign ears in some cases.

A little Friday afternoon entertainment awaits.

Sept 27: Olam, Hor Kew, Transcu, China XLX Fertiliser, China Dairy Group

Singapore shares may open higher on Monday after Wall Street notched its fourth week of gains, as a rise in August business spending was seen as the latest sign the recovery is on firmer ground. Singapore’s benchmark Straits Times Index <.FTSTI> was up 0.31% on Friday to 3,092.68 points.

Here are some stocks and factors to watch:

Commodities firm Olam International (OLAM.SI) may be in focus after it said that it has raised its stake in dairy farmer NZ Farming Systems Uruguay to 78% for NZ$101.8 million ($98.8 million), bringing its total investment to NZ$120.3 million. Olam shares rose as much as 9.2% on Friday on news that it is in merger talks with larger rival Louis Dreyfus.

Last night at Town Hall in Auckland, NZ, Pavement played their first show in over 10 years. The band busted out a 25-song set that began with “In the Mouth a Desert,” from 1992′s full-length debut, Slanted and Enchanted and went on to include “Grounded,” “Cut Your Hair,” “Gold Soundz,” “Shady Lane,” “Rattled by the Rush,” “Range Life,” “Stereo,” and “Spit on a Stranger” amongst others.

Following the show, guitarist Scott “Spiral Stairs” Kannberg hit up his blog where he reported: “We were seriously nervous! The show was great. The fans were unreal. Whew… all those Pavement anxiety dreams can now go away!”

There are a bunch of YouTube videos posted here. We’ve pulled a few for your enjoyment:
