From anon at Old Trafford on 81111: "Big changes at Old Trafford for the new season. Popcorn is on offer, and also giant chocolate buttons. "

1257: I don’t need to tell Arsenal or Everton fans who the big winners and losers were on Saturday but one statistic that stood out was the number of away wins – out of eight games, Chelsea and Stoke were the only home teams to collect three points. Can you see Birmingham and Liverpool winning on their travels today too It’s a big ask for both of them…1255: TEAMS Manchester United v Birmingham City
Man Utd: Foster, Fabio Da Silva, O’Shea, Jonathan Evans, Evra, Valencia, Fletcher, Scholes, Nani, Berbatov, Rooney. Subs: Kuszczak, Brown, Owen, Anderson, Giggs, Gibson, De Laet.
Birmingham: Hart, Carr, Roger Johnson, Queudrue, Vignal, Larsson, Ferguson, Carsley, Fahey, McFadden, Jerome. Subs: Maik Taylor, O’Connor, Phillips, Benitez, McSheffrey, Parnaby, O’Shea. From Sukh at Old Trafford on 81111: "Good atmosphere here in the stands – everyone looking forward to the first game of the season in the Premier League. My prediction – 3-0 to Utd!"

From Webby on 606:"Newcastle and Reading both drew with Man Utd at Old Trafford on the opening day in previous seasons… needless to say we all know what happened then to those clubs…Birmingham beware the draw."

1249: Some early team news from Old Trafford – Rio Ferdinand, who was already doubtful because of a back injury, has been ruled out by a calf injury sustained in training. John O’Shea will captain Manchester United in his absence and partner Jonny Evans in the centre of defence. Full line-ups to follow.1246 I’m expecting plenty of chat from you lot too of course. Get involved on606,via text on 81111 or, if you’re feeling adventurous, give me a tweet onTwitter.Basically, you’ve got no excuse for not getting in touch.

1243: Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson on his side’s bid to become the first side to win the Premier League four years on the trot: "We have more experience because of winning the titles but it doesn’t make that much difference in terms of the competition we are going to get into. To win four in a row would be fantastic. But this is a difficult league to win and, rather than look to May, I am looking at Sunday."

1240: By the way, if you haven’t seen it yet, I recommend you check out‘the goal that wasn’t’ in Crystal Palace’s defeat by Bristol City on Saturday. If you’re in the UK and have got access to iPlayer then you can watch it now. If you have seen it, you can kind of see why Eagles boss Neil Warnock is a teeny bit aggrieved, can’t youBBC Sport’s Phil McNulty:"Off to White Hart Lane soon. Will Liverpool justify my prediction that they will be Premier League champions Tough start."

1236: If you’re a Birmingham fan then your confidence ahead of the new campaign is hardly likely to have been boosted by thecomments of your manager Alex McLeish this week.Bemoaning the lack of funds to strengthen his squad, the Scot said: "We are not equipped for the Premier League as things stand now. If this team is to stay up, we need more quality. We still need at least three more players."From We all agree, Manchester United are Magic! on 606:"The Champions are finally here. Now witness the magic that is Manchester United."

1234: Reigning champions Manchester United join the party today, kicking off the defence of their title against newly-promoted Birmingham at 1330 BST. That match is followed by a humdinger at White Hart Lane between Tottenham and Liverpool at 1600 BST – not a bad way to test the Reds’ title credentials that…1232 BST: Blimey, yesterday was a bit of a cracker wasn’t it And I’ve got good news – the opening weekend of the 2009/10 Premier League is not over yet…

An intimate display of masterworks

IN A city bursting with free museums, a gallery must provide something special to merit an entry fee. The Phillips Collection, a modest art museum in a leafy neighbourhood of Washington, DC, does so. It affords viewers a rare opportunity to marvel at Impressionist, modern and contemporary masterworks in the intimacy of a once-private home.

Navigating the small rooms of this mansion in Dupont Circle feels like a treasure hunt. Works by Klee, O’Keeffe and Bonnard mix with Braque, Goya and El Greco around fireplaces and winding staircases. The effect is refreshingly humane, and entirely unlike the dwarfing, take-your-medicine feel of many galleries. At the Phillips, paintings can be read closely, like personal missives, often without the bother of anyone else in the room (except for the watchful security guards, many of whom have the desultory look of freshly minted art-school graduates). …

Vodafone interested in iPhone deal

• Operator hints it could challenge O2′s exclusive deal with Apple
• Growth in emerging markets offsets slide in European revenues

Vodafone has added to speculation that O2′s exclusive deal to supply the iPhone in the UK may soon be up for grabs by suggesting that it would like to offer Apple’s smartphone to more of its own customers.

Andy Halford, chief financial officer of the world’s largest mobile phone operator, told reporters this morning that Vodafone was keen to supply the iPhone across more of its empire. It currently sells the device in 11 countries but not in the key European markets of Germany, where it is stocked exclusively by T-Mobile, or the UK.

“It’s a good product and we would love to have it in the portfolio in more countries,” said Halford, speaking after Vodafone published first-quarter results that showed the continuing impact of the recession and intense competition in its core European markets.

There has been intense speculation in recent weeks that T-Mobile, Orange and Vodafone are trying to muscle in on O2′s exclusive deal with Apple in the UK. T-Mobile is going so far as to buy the device in other markets where it is freely available without being tied to one operator and shipping it back to the UK in order to sell it to customers who are considering defecting to O2.

Halford also said Vodafone likes the idea of merging its businesses in underperforming markets with other players in order to reduce costs. The company, which last month merged its Australian business with local rival 3, is understood to have been approached by bankers at JP Morgan about the possibility of a merger in the UK with fourth-placed T-Mobile.

Asked about Vodafone’s attitude to so-called in-market consolidation, Halford said: “The concept of putting two business together with very obvious cost synergies … is one that we like.”

“There are other markets where we think more consolidation would be a good thing,” he added, alluding to the UK.

Much of Vodafone’s recent acquisition activity, however, has been in emerging markets such as India and Africa. In the latter, Vivendi recently halted talks about a potential $10bn (£6bn) acquisition of Zain, which has operations across the continent. Asked whether Vodafone would be interested in Zain, Halford said: “Our primary focus is on squeezing all the pips we can out of the existing business.”

Recession takes its toll

Vodafone announced today that first-quarter revenues rose 9.3% to £10.7bn, roughly in line with analysts’ projections. Splitting out currency effects and acquisitions, organic service revenue was down 2.1% due to weakness across most of Europe as a result of the continuing economic recession. That poor performance was offset somewhat by solid results in Italy and continued growth in emerging markets, especially India.

Overall, the company achieved first-quarter free cash flow of just under £1.9bn, up 21.2%, as it continued to rein in costs. It added a total of 8 million new customers in the quarter – taking its base to 315.3 million – although most of that growth was in India, where is gained almost 7.7 million.

Revenues in Europe were £7bn, down 4.4% on an organic basis, and the only growth markets for the company were Italy and the Netherlands. The company, which flagged at its full-year results in May that the recession would hit the business, admitted that revenue in the second quarter will be affected by regulatory price cuts in the UK and a drop in the money it makes from international roaming as fewer people go on holiday. In some European markets, such as the UK, it has abolished roaming rates altogether.

Within its core European business, Spain continued to be a major problem with revenues down 8.1%, while in the UK revenues of just under £1.2bn were down 4.7% on an organic basis. The firm said this was due to “intense competition and economic pressures; the latter resulted in reduced discretionary spend which led to customers optimising bundle usage, higher prepaid inactivity and lower roaming revenue”.

Vodafone lost customers across three of its four main European markets – Germany, Italy and the UK – with its British operation seeing 159,000 defect. It now has 18.6 million UK customers, making it number two behind O2.

Reports overnight suggested that Vodafone plans to charge people who call the swine flu hotline set up yesterday for NHS patients in England. A spokesman for the company, however, stressed this morning that it is not charging for calls to the 0800 number, in line with rivals Orange, O2 and T-Mobile.

Meanwhile, Vodafone’s Turkish business, which has taken far longer to turn around than the company had hoped, continued to struggle, with service revenues down 11.2% at constant exchange rates, driven by a 26.8% decline in outgoing voice revenues.

Mobile broadband holes logged

Woman using laptop on Primrose Hill

There are still significant notspots when it comes to 3G mobile coverage in the UK, regulator Ofcom has revealed.

It has pledged to investigate why some places, particularly in rural areas, are still failing to get any coverage.

It also said it will investigate mobile broadband speeds, which vary tremendously in different areas and at different times of day.

Between February 2008 and February 2009 there were two million new connections to mobile broadband, said Ofcom.

3G (or Third Generation) services allow people to connect to the web via a wireless network, either using a phone, a dongle or datacard which can be plugged into a PC or a laptop.

In the UK such services are offered by operators such as Vodafone, Orange, O2, T-Mobile and 3.

But there are questions about how reliable these services are and whether they can provide the speeds needed by consumers.

More spectrum

Research from broadband communications firm Epitiro recently found that the average download speed achieved with mobile broadband was just under 1Mbps (megabit per second).

"if mobile networks are going to become one of the key routes to the internet for million of users, they’re going to need to build more six-lane highways to replace those B-roads where the traffic keeps getting stuck."

Rory Cellan-Jones
BBC technology correspondent

Read the dot.life blog in full

At 0300 this average rose to 1.8Mbps, illustrating that contention issues – how many people use the service at any given time – plays a big role in limiting speed.

On average mobile broadband users were only getting a quarter of advertised speeds, found Epitiro’s study.

Increasingly consumers are dropping their fixed line phones in favour of mobile. While mobile calls increased by 11 billion minutes during 2008, the number of minutes on fixed lines fell by 8 billion.

Consumers are getting increasingly data-hungry. In 2003, just 1% of revenue per mobile connection came from data but by 2008 that rose to 6%, according to Ofcom.

The Digital Britain report pledged to free up more 3G spectrum, which should improve coverage.

Consumer Focus, an organisation dedicated to campaigning for a fair deal for consumers, welcomed Ofcom’s review of the mobile market.

"Some consumers find themselves excluded from mobile communications due to gaps in 3G coverage or the market’s failure to make new technology accessible to all," said Audrey Gallacher, telecoms expert at Consumer Focus.

She felt that Ofcom could do more to make it easier for consumers to sign up to mobile broadband.

"Accessing the best deal in a market where mobile operators offer a bewildering array of over 200,000 different tariffs is a real challenge," she said.

"With mobiles now treated as an essential service rather than a luxury, there is more pressure than ever before on mobile companies to give consumers a fair deal and make mobile services accessible to all," she added.
