The Mother Hips: New Album/Tour

THE MOTHER HIPS ANNOUNCE NEW ALBUM PACIFIC DUST TO BE RELEASED OCTOBER 27, 2009

NEW RECORD MIXES PURE AMERICANA STORYTELLING WITH PSYCHEDELIC POWER POP

BAND ANNOUNCES FALL TOUR DATES

The Mother Hips

The Mother Hips have flown under the radar as true indie music pioneers for almost two decades. With the release of their new album Pacific Dust (available October 27 on Camera Records), California’s unsung psych-pop heroes tell their story. Hailed by critics for their “rootsy mix of ’70s rock and power pop” (Pitchfork) and for their unflinching ability to “sing it sweet and play it dirty” (New Yorker), on Pacific Dust The Hips’ signature sound rings more genuine and relevant than ever before.

The Hips – led by co-founders Tim Bluhm (vocals/guitar) and Greg Loiacono (guitar/vocals) – have been playing music for nearly 18 years, and in the process, have had the luxury of exploring and refining their craft. For the band’s seventh full-length studio album, The Mother Hips have never been more primed to share their well-traveled tales – the long days and nights on the road, the gritty politics, the smart inward reflections and the music! – all delivered with a most appealing balance of Americana storytelling and their California-burnished rock.

Pacific Dust‘s compositions about penning a song in your kitchen at 3:00 a.m. (the thundering album opener “White Falcon Fuzz”), record company politics (garage-rock boogie “Third Floor Story”), and a father and son’s relationship through music (on the ballad “Young Charles Ives”) indeed tell the story of many American rock bands. But here’s why it matters: The Mother Hips have survived, and in fact thrived, throughout the journey – and Pacific Dust, with its bittersweet melodies, poignant lyrics, and strong and gritty musicianship, is a perfect example of why.

The Mother Hips owe most of their success to their large and loyal fan base. Earlier releases such as Part-Timer Goes Full, Green Hills of Earth, and Red Tandy have become almost cult classics among indie music buffs, and the band’s most recent 2007 album, Kiss the Crystal Flake, offered proof that the band still continues to attract new supporters. Over the years, the band has worked with and played alongside a slew of renowned/respected colleagues including super-producer Rick Rubin, Wilco, Johnny Cash, and many others.

Today, armed with their newest release Pacific Dust, The Hips are poised to take their experience and talent to another level for this next leg of their already epic journey.

BT raises call prices again

12 million customers to be hit in October as call costs go up 34% since January

BT is putting up its prices for the second time this year, making calls 34% more expensive than they were six months ago.

The company put up the cost of calls in April and will do the same again at the beginning of October. From then, calls will be 5.25p per minute, up from 3.91p at the beginning of the year. The set-up fee – the cost of connecting a call – will rise to 9p. It was 6.85p in January.

The move will hit 12 million of BT’s 14 million customers. Only those on its Anytime package, which costs £4.95 a month, will not be affected.

The latest increases will come into effect on 1 October. Customers were told of the change in the magazine that BT sends out with its bills.

“We have been quite generous to customers over the years, offering things like free calls to 0845 and 0870 numbers. Telephony costs have come down,” a spokesman for BT said. “We advise customers to consider whether they would be better off moving to the Anytime calls package in order to avoid increases in daytime call prices and the set up fee. BT’s Unlimited Anytime Plan costs just £4.95 a month, or 17p a day, and includes all your UK calls and calls to 0870 and 0845 numbers at any time.”

BT’s latest price rises may be the final straw for customers who have also endured a line rental increase in April from £11.50 to £12.50 a month.

“Today’s price increase announcement isn’t likely to improve BT’s popularity in the eyes of cash strapped consumers,” said Steve Weller of price comparison website uswitch.com.

At the moment the Post Office is offering a plan that is nearly 17% cheaper than BT for day time calls and 13% cheaper for call set-up fees and includes evenings and weekends without a 12-month contract, he adds. Similarly TalkTalk is offering calls at 4.50p per minute.

Villa agree £12m Downing fee

• Downing had been promised he could move to a big club
• England man likely to be out until October after foot surgery

Aston Villa have agreed a fee of around £12m with Middlesbrough for their winger Stewart Downing. Downing is currently recovering from surgery on a fractured bone in his foot, and is unlikely to be ready for competitive football before October at the earliest, but it appears the Villa manager Martin O’Neill is now keen to complete a deal this summer, rather than waiting until January as had previously been suggested.

Downing, for his part, did not relish the prospect of playing Championship football as he looks to press his claim for a place in Fabio Capello’s England squad ahead of next summer’s World Cup. He had been promised by Middlesbrough’s chairman, Steve Gibson, that he could leave if a big club came in at the right price and the Boro manager Gareth Southgate is resigned to losing the player.

Downing was given clearance to start gym work following a visit to a specialist last week and is due to have a pin inserted in his foot, which he fractured during a game against Aston Villa last season, removed during September. His surgeon is said to be “very pleased” with Downing’s progress and is confident he will make a full recovery.

Martin O’Neill regards Downing as a partial replacement for Gareth Barry, and is also understood to have expressed an interest in Boro’s Tuncay Sanli. Middlesbrough are reportedly demanding a fee of close to £8m for the Turkey international.

The contenders for Uruguay’s presidency emerge

Primary elections were held in Uruguay on June 28th and confirmed what opinion polls have long suggested—that the presidential candidates for the October 25th election will be Jose Mujica, from the ruling centre-left Frente Amplio (FA) coalition, Luis Alberto Lacalle, from the right-wing Partido Nacional (PN, also known as the Blancos), Pedro Bordaberry from the centre-right Partido Colorado (PC) and an independent, Pablo Mieres. The only two candidates with a realistic chance of winning the presidency are Mr Mujica and Mr Lacalle, which some fear brings the possibility of a polarised campaign. However, the need to attract centrist voters is important for both candidates, who are likely to focus their presidential campaigns on the centre ground.

Both Mr Mujica and Mr Lacalle won convincing victories: Mr Mujica beat the former finance minister, Danilo Astori, by 53% to 38% with a third FA candidate, Marcos Carambula, polling 9% of the votes; within the PN, Mr Lacalle beat Jorge Larranaga by 57% to 43%. According to exit polls, the PN obtained the largest share of the vote (43.1%) against 42.2% for the FA. Although the figures do not reflect the overall level of support for the parties, the FA had been expected to top the polls and the turnout has been interpreted as a boost for the opposition. …

Blow to Japan’s PM in Tokyo poll

By Roland Buerk
BBC News, Tokyo

Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso campaigning in Tokyo (3 July 2009)

People in Tokyo are preparing to vote in local polls considered a key test of popularity for Prime Minister Taro Aso.

The polls in the capital come ahead of a general election which must be held by October.

Taro Aso, whose Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has governed for almost all the past half-century, has approval hovering around 20%.

The opposition Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) is hoping to break the LDP’s grip on power.

Voters are deciding who will sit on Tokyo’s metropolitan assembly, but the stakes could be higher than that for Mr Aso.

If his LDP does badly, moves to oust him from the leadership could intensify.

In the run up to the vote in Tokyo candidates, wearing white gloves and sashes, toured the streets in vans using loudspeakers to campaign.

But many voters appeared largely indifferent.

Some candidates resorted to making speeches in front of deserted city car parks, their words echoing off the surrounding apartment blocks.

The LDP has governed Japan for the past half century, except for a break of less than a year in the 1990s.

But Mr Aso, who is the fourth prime minister since the last election to the more powerful lower house in 2005, has dismal approval ratings.

The opposition DPJ hopes to take power in the next general election, which must be held by October.

It is promising to break the grip of the bureaucracy on policy making, and increase social welfare measures.

But the opposition’s support has been eroded by fund raising scandals.</p
