A UN refugee agency official has been shot dead during a failed kidnap attempt in north-west Pakistan.

The man, a Pakistani, died in hospital after the shooting at the Katcha Garhi camp near Peshawar, the UN said.

Police say a second UN official was also killed and another injured when four armed men tried to abduct them.

More than 200,000 people have been staying in camps near Peshawar since being displaced by recent fighting between troops and the Taliban. </p

S Korean ex-leader on respirator

Kim Dae-jung attended the funeral of former President Roh Moo-hyun in a wheelchair - 29 May 2009

Former South Korean President Kim Dae-jung is in an intensive care unit in a Seoul hospital being treated for pneumonia, medical officials have said.

Mr Kim, 85, was put on a respirator after complications arose, but is not in a critical condition, hospital official Park Chang-il said.

He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2000 for brokering the first summit of leaders from divided Korea.

He served as South Korean president from 1998-2003.

"He became short of breath on Wednesday night and was put on a respirator around 0300 this morning," an official at Yonsei Severance Hospital was quoted as saying by Yonhap news agency.

"His condition has improved since. He is conscious, and his pulse, breathing and body temperature are normal."

Mr Kim was taken to the hospital on Monday with a fever and cold symptoms.

He dedicated his career to promoting democracy and human rights during the decades of authoritarian rule in South Korea.

His Sunshine Policy improved ties with the North during his presidency, but successors have taken a tougher line with Pyongyang and North-South relations have since soured.

Orissa map

At least seven people have been killed after a bus they were travelling in was swept away by a flash flood in the Indian state of Orissa, police said.

The bus was crossing a small bridge in the Nayagarh district when the gushing waters engulfed it late on Monday, the police added.

A local official said rescuers were looking for 15 people who were missing following the incident.

There have been heavy monsoon rains in Orissa since Sunday.

Local official KC Jena told the Associated Press news agency that 20 people, who had been travelling in the bus, had been rescued from the Besalia river in Nayagarh, some 75 miles (120km) west of the state capital, Bhubaneshwar.

The official quoted passengers as saying that the driver of the passenger bus had ignored warnings from passengers not to cross the bridge.

Monsoon rains in India usually begin in June and end in September.</p
