Grateful Dead: Europe Â’72 Tour Box Set

INDIVIDUALLY NUMBERED, LIMITED EDITION COLLECTION

AVAILABLE EXCLUSIVELY AT DEAD.NET AND SHIPS IN SEPTEMBER

sketch of new box set

Grateful Dead slipped the
shores of America and crossed the pond for its first-ever major European tour in April 1972. The legendary 22-
show run spawned Europe ’72, a live triple album that remains one of the band’s best-selling and most
beloved releases. A tour this momentous deserves a boxed set of historic proportions and Dead.net has stamped your passport to relive every note from the European tour
with Europe ’72: The Complete Recordings, an individually numbered, limited edition collection
that includes more than 60 discs with over 70 hours of music featuring every show from what is arguably the
Grateful Dead’s greatest tour. The box set ships in September.

Europe ’72: The Complete Recordings is housed in a replica steamer trunk reminiscent of the ones
prevalently used at the time. The travel
chest contains tour memorabilia, a coffee-table book with never-before-seen photos, and a comprehensive essay
by noted Dead author Blair Jackson. Each performance will also be accompanied by an essay specific to
the show written by top Dead scholars including David Gans, Gary Lambert, Nicholas Meriwether, and
Steve Silberman.

Jeffrey Norman, the primary mixer of the Dead’s archival multi-track material for the past 15 years, is
mixing each
show from the original 16-track recordings.

Due to ship in September, the boxed set is available exclusively from Dead.net, which is taking orders now. The
price of the collection is $450, which works out to the remarkably low price of about $20 for each show, or roughly
the cost of a transatlantic flight from New York City to London in 1972 (price of time machine not included).

The first 3,000 fans to order will have
their copy personalized with a name requested by the purchaser. Once the 3,000 order goal is reached by April 1,
Dead.net will continue to take orders through the summer but will limit production of the collection to a maximum
of 7,200 pieces, all of which will be individually numbered. Orders will no longer be taken at some date (to be
determined) later in the summer.

The tour offers a snapshot of a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums—
Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty, and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a
year since
the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been
broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as
a member of the touring band.

There was a ton of new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 and during the spring of
’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble On Rose,” “One More
Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen‘s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger
(Two
Souls In Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were
interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar
Magnolia,” “Bertha,” and “Not Fade Away”—and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers—the Europe
’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One,” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat
Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight,” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.”

…And You Will Know Us: New Album in 2011

NEW ALBUM IN 2011, NEW SINGLE THIS MONTH

new single

The core members of …And You Will Know us By The Trail of DeadConrad Keely and Jason Reece – return with their seventh longplayer titled Tao of the Dead on February 8th, 2011 in North America, February 7th in the UK and Europe and February 4th in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

The new album pays faithful homage to Pink Floyd, Rush, Steppenwolf, and Neu!, and in order to retrace their musical steps, the band enlisted long-time friend Chris “Frenchie” Smith (producer of the band’s seminal 1998 self-titled LP). The band also experimented with celebrated indie producer Chris Coady (Beach House, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Blonde Redhead) on a 15 minute opus titled “Tao of the Dead Part 2.”

To kick things off Â…And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead are releasing the first single off the album, “Summer Of All Dead Souls,” on November 29.

Formed in late 1994 by singers/guitarists/drummers Conrad Keely and Jason Reece, Trail of Dead has evolved over the years, expanding their line-up while still being creatively driven by the founding members. Friends since childhood, Keely and Reece started playing music in the indie rock town of Olympia, WA and eventually relocated to Austin, TX where they started Â…And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead.

The band will of course be touring in support of the new album, kicking things off in Europe at the end of March on a co-headlining tour with Rival Schools and then heading out in the US at the end of April – dates to be announced shortly.

Carl-Peter Forster at Tata

The announcement that Carl-Peter Forster has taken a senior job at Tata Motors (TM) isn’t exactly surprising. It was rumoured to be on the cards last year after he had left GM in the immediate GM/Opel/Magna fallout. Ratan Tata is clearly looking for someone with the relevant experience and ability to take TM to the next level – essentially a major presence on the international stage. He has got his man.

Forster is in many ways the ideal candidate. He knows the European automotive market and industry intimately. He also comes with knowledge of how a big car company like General Motors, with diverse operations and an international footprint, actually works.

He also knows a bit about cost management from his ‘Project Olympia’ GM Europe experience. And he ought to be able to offer some insights on industrial relations (which might be particularly helpful to JLR).

Forster comes with a Rolodex full of contacts and a level of strategic know-how that is informed by his high-level industry experience. He is much respected in the industry, especially in Europe. Home grown managers are great, but sometimes the mix at the highest level benefits from a fresh perspective.

The big project is taking Tata Motors to a new level. Forster will have to have a vision that chimes with what Ratan Tata wants and – crucially – a plan on how to realise that vision in the long-term. Many of the building blocks are already in place: Tata Motors is a considerable industrial force based in one of the world’s high-growth emerging markets that also boasts low manufacturing costs. Tata Motors is no one-trick pony – it makes cars and trucks and is part of a conglomerate which can also bring further, less obvious, benefits to bear.

I wouldn’t mind betting that one of the first things Forster will want to do is review the whole Tata Nano project, top to bottom. It has not been an unqualified success so far and he will want to get to the bottom of where the problems have been, what has worked well and what hasn’t. And then there’s the small matter of turning a car like the Indica into something that would work in overseas markets. The trucks? They may be a nice little earner in India, but is there more potential for overseas sales?

Jaguar Land Rover is probably something he will want to take some time over. Sales have looked better recently and there is already a plan in place to consolidate on facilities (with a plant to go after 2014) which will save on cost. Can some JLR activity or some models – old ones perhaps – be made in India? That, as Mr Forster will be well aware, is a suggestion to be handled with the utmost sensitivity. Getting JLR back in the black is the immediate priority as the business model is retuned – especially at Jaguar where the dash for volume growth under Ford ultimately failed.

Ratan Tata will want Tata Motors in 5-10 years’ time to look different from the Tata Motors of today – with a bigger spread of products (and better ones) and much more international market presence. Getting an industry heavyweight like Forster on board – and basing him in Mumbai – sends out a message to the industry that Tata is serious about growing outside of India.

INDIA: Carl-Peter Forster appointed CEO of Tata Motors

John Hiatt: The Open Road

JOHN HIATT TO RELEASE THE OPEN ROAD MARCH 2

John Hiatt

Looking at life through the rearview mirror was the inspiration for John Hiatt‘s brand new album, The Open Road, due out March 2 via New West Records. The legendary songwriter’s 19th studio album is classic Hiatt, picking up the tempo and returning to rock following his previous critically acclaimed Same Old Man.

Backed by his touring band, (Kenny Blevins on drums, Patrick O’Hearn on bass and Doug Lancio on guitars), the songs are inspired by life on the road, without looking back. “All the other years, my songs are about coming home,” Hiatt says.

Hiatt will take the new songs on the road beginning with a run of international dates with Lyle Lovett. Upon returning to the states, he will appear on the 3rd annual Cayamo Cruise, on which he’s played since the first voyage. Tour dates in North America will follow in March, with stops in New York City on March 10 followed by Pittsburgh, DC and Annapolis, which is already sold out.

Hiatt has written songs covered by a multitude of artists in a wide variety of genres including Bob Dylan, Rosanne Cash, Willie Nelson, Jewel and Bonnie Raitt, who most famously recorded “Thing Called Love.” On The Open Road he showcases both his lyrical and musical talent with his blues driven, rock songs including the title track and “Haulin’.” Hiatt produced The Open Road himself after recording with his band in his garage-turned-studio.

They spent seven days in December tracking at acclaimed engineer/musician David Teegarden‘s Natura Digital Recording Studios just outside of Tulsa.

The album, tentatively scheduled for a June release, will reflect JFJO’s first year of touring and writing together since founding member and pianist Brian Haas and drummer Josh Raymer revamped the lineup last January with the addition of lap steel guitarist Chris Combs and upright bassist Matt Hayes.

Dave Rawlings Machine Dates

DAVE RAWLINGS MACHINE TO HIT THE ROAD AGAIN FOR WINTER WEST COAST TOUR

Dave Rawlings

Acony Records is proud to announce Dave Rawlings Machine West Coast tour dates. Fresh off a hugely successful and highly regarded national tour that ended at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry with Emmylou Harris, the Machine is ready to get back on the road in support of its critically acclaimed debut record, A Friend of a Friend.

Released in November 2009, this is the first record by Dave Rawlings, the guitarist, producer, singer and songwriter best known for his work with Gillian Welch and Old Crow Medicine Show. These long time compatriots made the record with Rawlings as did newer friends Benmont Tench from the Heartbreakers, Karl Himmel, and Nate Walcott of Bright Eyes. The touring Machine will include Rawlings and Welch along with Ketch Secor, Willie Watson and Morgan Jahnig of Old Crow Medicine Show.

The fall 2009 tour saw the band focusing on the Southern and Midwestern parts of the country. Reviews were stellar across the board, most notably the Chicago Tribune, which said, “The Dave Rawlings Machine allowed Rawlings and Welch to focus not on the message or the mood, but the sheer joy of the music,” and the Wisconsin State Journal which exclaimed, “The band flew through the set with that elusive combination of abandon and precision… it was hard to miss the big smiles on the faces onstage as the almost overwhelming energy from the crowd poured over them.”
