SIA’s operating profit rises 58% to $509m in 3Q

Singapore Air says it made an operating profit of $509 million in the third quarter of the 2010-11 financial year, a 58% increase over the same quarter last year.

The parent airline company earned an operating profit of $378 million in the third quarter, $147 million more than in the same three months of the previous year. All the main companies in the group were profitable, with improved operating performance.

SIA Cargo posted an operating profit of $48 million (+18%), SilkAir’s operating profit was $45 million (+93%) while SIA Engineering made an operating profit of $34 million (+58%)

Group revenue at $3,841 million grew 12% year-on-year, supported by continued improvement in carriage and yields.

On the cost side, group expenditure rose $237 million (+8%) to $3,332 million. Expenditure on fuel before hedging increased $154 million owing to higher jet fuel prices.

Group net profit for the third quarter was $288 million, a decline of $116 million from the corresponding period a year earlier. In the quarter, a $199 million provision was made in accordance with the Singapore Financial Reporting Standards for fines imposed. While SIA Cargo has accepted the plea offer made by the United States Department of Justice, it has filed appeals against fines imposed by the European Commission and the South Korean Fair Trade Commission, and intends to contest these fines. Excluding the fines, group net profit improved by 21%.

 

M1′s 4Q net profit tad up on higher operating revenue

M1 (MONE.SI), Singapore’s smallest mobile phone operator, said its fourth quarter net profit rose 0.7%, as higher operating revenue was offset by a rise in operating expenses.
 
M1 had a net profit of $37.5 million for the three months ended Dec 31, up from$37.2 million in the year-ago period, it said in a statement.
 
The company’s operating revenue rose 20.9% to $261.4 million in the fourth quarter from $216.2 million a year ago, due to higher service revenue and handset sales.

Microsoft’s mobile operating system: Windows or curtains

The software giant is desperate to make a splash in the smart-phone business

AT A company meeting last year, Steve Ballmer, Microsoft’s pugnacious boss, spied an employee taking a photo on an Apple iPhone. He promptly grabbed the offending device and pretended to stamp on it. Microsoft would love to crush competitors in the smart-phone market, but it has repeatedly failed to come up with compelling offerings of its own. Now the software firm is gearing up for another assault on a business that is crucial to its future.

On October 11th Microsoft is due to unveil phones from manufacturers such as HTC and Samsung that incorporate its new operating system, Windows Phone 7 (WP7). An accompanying media blitz will seek to position it as an attractive alternative to Apple’s iPhone, Google’s Android and Symbian, which powers many Nokia phones (see chart). The stakes are high for Microsoft and for Mr Ballmer, whose stewardship of the firm is the subject of intense debate. Microsoft’s share price has fallen by almost 20% since the beginning of this year, while the S&P 500 stockmarket index has risen by 4%. …

SGX-Chi-X jt venture to start operating this quarter

Chi-East, a dark pool joint venture between Nomura’s (8604.T) Chi-X Global and Singapore Exchange (SGXL.SI), has obtained central bank approval to start operations sometime this quarter, the firm said on Monday.

Dark pools, which have become increasingly popular in the West, are alternative trading platforms that allow brokers and fund managers to place and match large “buy” and “sell” orders anonymously so as to not to influence the share price.

Parkway operating profit gains 25% as admissions rise: Update

Parkway Holdings, the target of a $3.5 billion buyout bid by Khazanah Nasional Bhd., posted a 25% gain in second-quarter operating profit after admissions at its hospitals increased.

Profit rose to $37.5 million in the three months ended June 30, from $30.1 million a year earlier, Parkway, Asia’s biggest hospital operator, said today. Net income fell 9% because a $17.2 million write-back in the second quarter of 2009 inflated earnings in that period.

Keppel’s operating profit rises 25% on offshore, property units

Keppel Corp., the world’s largest oil-rig maker, reported a 25% increase in second-quarter operating profit, helped by higher earnings at its offshore and real-estate units.

The profit totaled $444.6 million in the three months ended June compared with $356.8 million a year earlier, the Singapore-based company said in a statement to the stock exchange today. Net income dropped 53% to $347.3 million after year-earlier one-time gains
