State-owned Chinese steel mills mull ore swaps: SGX

The Singapore Exchange (SGX) said on Wednesday it is only a matter of time before state-owned steel mills in China start using its iron ore swaps contracts to hedge risk.

SGX, whose iron ore swap volumes reached a record 5.3 million tonnes in the second quarter as traditional pricing arrangements in China collapsed, added that it expected its business to expand strongly.

Singapore bourse clears about 90% of global iron ore swap trade

Singapore Exchange, operator of the city’s securities and derivatives markets, represents as much as 90% of global over-the-counter clearing of iron ore swaps, said the chief executive of its commodity unit.

More than 200 counterparties, which are producers, users and traders of the steel-making ingredient, are using the service, Chief Executive Officer Jeremy Ang of the Singapore Commodity Exchange said in an interview today.

Noble 1Q profit rises 28% on coal, ore: Update

Noble Group, the commodities supplier part-owned by China Investment Corp., said first quarter profit rose 28% as demand and prices of coal, iron ore and aluminum improved with the economic recovery.

Net income increased to US$115 million ($160 million), or 2.86 cents a share, for the three months ended March 31, from US$90.2 million, or 2.77 cents, in the year-earlier period, Hong Kong-based Noble said in a statement to the Singapore Exchange. Sales surged 87% to a quarterly record of US$11.4 billion.

Courage Marine Group, the dry-bulk shipper, has successfully launched its newly acquired pre-owned 130,000 dwt vessel.

This new vessel, MV Cape Ore (ex-MV Constantinoupolis), joined the fleet yesterday in servicing the Asia region, mainly delivering coal, iron ore and bauxite. With its larger capacity, this vessel will bring greater cost efficiency to the group, says Courage Marine.

SGX iron ore swaps volume at record in November as demand gains

Singapore Exchange’s iron ore swaps volumes jumped to a record last month on increased demand from steel mills, traders and shipping companies in Asia.
Cleared contract volumes rose to almost 1.5 million metric tons in November, SGX AsiaClear said yesterday in an e-mailed statement. The value of the contracts was a record US$140 million ($193 million), SGX told Bloomberg News in an e-mail today.

AusGroup awarded $127m BHP Billiton Iron Ore contract

AusGroup says its unit AGC Industries won a A$100 million ($127 million) contract by BHP Billiton Iron Ore.

Under the deal, Australian subsidiary AGC Industries will construct an ore handling plant and the stockpile and conveyor systems.

HP, SGI, Cray and Dell Show Off New Systems at Supercomputing 2009

Industry-standard technology, GPUs and energy efficiency were among the key themes running throughout the Supercomputing 2009 show in Portland, Ore. At the show, which wraps up Nov. 20, a number of vendors, including Cray, Dell, HP and SGI showed off new and enhanced high-end systems, many of which are designed to enable businesses and HPC (high-performance computing) environments to ramp up performance and density while driving down operational, capital and power costs. In addition, Intel unveiled that it will offer a Nehalem EX Xeon processor optimized for supercomputing, while the chip maker boasted that 402 of the top 500 fastest supercomputers in the world are powered by its processors. Rival AMD took the number-one spot, with the Opteron-powered Jaguar computer from Cray knocking off IBM’s RoadRunner at the top of the list. Chip Shot: Intel and SGI Break Supercomputing Boundaries

Intel and SGI are scaling the extreme heights of supercomputing with a shared memory supercomputer called Altix UV. The system will lead the industry in maximizing bandwidth and minimizing latency on cluster and HPC applications. The system, which is being unveiled at Supercomputing 2009 in Portland, Ore., uses quad-, six-, or eight-core Nehalem-EX processors, and will deliver exceptional performance and scalability. Nvidia Unveils Fermi-Based Tesla GPUs

Nvidia is giving attendees at the Supercomputing 2009 show a look at the upcoming Tesla GPUs that will be based on the companys upcoming “Fermi” CUDA architecture. Nvidia is continuing to push GPUs into the general-purpose computing space, an effort begun two years ago when the company first introduced the CUDA architecture for massively parallel-processing workloads. Chip makers Intel and AMD are now working to integrate more graphics capabilities into their CPUs, and OEMs are beginning to build systems powered by GPUs.

Chip Shot: New HPC Optimized Intel Processor Planned

At Supercomputing 2009 in Portland, Ore., Intel unveiled a future High Performance Computing (HPC) optimized version of its forthcoming processor codenamed “Nehalem-EX.” The six-core chip will run at higher frequencies than eight-core versions of the Nehalem-EX processors and will offer advantages on some HPC workloads. Customers will benefit from greater memory bandwidth and capacity and will be able to build single computers or “nodes” with up to 256 such chips. Cray Jaguar Takes Top Supercomputer Spot from IBM Roadrunner

After more than a year as the worlds fastest supercomputer, IBMs Roadrunner system was knocked down to the second spot by Crays Jaguar. Crays XT5 system got a boost when the computer maker swapped out the quad-core AMD Opterons for the six-core “Istanbul” chips, ramping up the power to more than 224,000 processing cores. Sun and SGI also were represented in the top 10 of the Top500 list of the fastest systems.
