Intel Increases Renewable Energy Credit Purchase to 2.5 Billion Kilowatt Hours

NEWS HIGHLIGHTS
  • Intel increased its renewable energy credit purchase to 2.5 billion kilowatt hours, a 75 percent increase over its 2010 commitment.
  • Intel has completed nine solar electric installations at Intel locations in four U.S. states and Israel, collectively generating approximately 3.8 million kilowatt hours per year of clean solar energy.
  • Intel, whose renewable energy credit purchase will exceed 85 percent of its estimated U.S. electricity use, was again named the largest voluntary purchaser of green power by the EPA.

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Feb. 1, 2011 – Building on years of support for renewable energy generation, Intel Corporation today announced that it will purchase 2.5 billion kilowatt hours of renewable energy credits (RECs) in 2011. This commitment is a 75 percent increase over its 2010 commitment of 1.43 billion kilowatt hours and equates to more than 85 percent of Intel’s estimated purchased electricity needs in the United States for 2011. In addition, Intel has completed nine solar electric installations at Intel locations in Arizona, California, New Mexico, Oregon and Israel, collectively generating more than 3.8 million kilowatt hours per year of clean solar energy.

“Intel’s renewable energy efforts are meant to spur the market and make renewables cheaper and more accessible, in turn helping to reduce the overall carbon emissions from electric generation,” said Brian Krzanich, senior vice president and general manager of Manufacturing and Supply Chain for Intel. “Intel’s REC purchases, support for solar installations and other clean energy investments will continue to be priorities for us as we search for effective sustainability opportunities around the globe.”

Intel first purchased RECs, the “currency” of renewable energy markets, and became the largest purchaser of green power in the United States1 with a 1.3 billion kilowatt hour commitment in 2008. Its 2011 purchase corresponds to the carbon dioxide emissions from the electricity use of nearly 218,000 average American homes or nearly 202 million gallons of gasoline consumed.2 As a result of Intel’s continued commitment to purchase RECs, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) again placed Intel at the top of its Green Power Partner List for 2011 as the largest voluntary, single purchaser of green power in the country. Intel was previously honored with the EPA’s Green Power Leadership Award.

In January 2010, Intel first announced its plans to construct eight solar projects across four states. Along with Intel’s first international solar electric project – a 50 kilowatt roof installation in Jerusalem – these projects are now complete and generating clean power for use at Intel facilities. The projects are a variety of types, including a massive 1-megawatt solar field that spans nearly six acres of land on Intel’s Folsom, Calif. campus, four rooftop installations and four solar support structures in Intel parking lots. Each of the U.S. installations, which were completed and are operated by Foster City, Calif.-based SolarCity, currently ranks among the 10 largest solar installations in its respective utility territory. The RECs generated by these installations are typically transferred to the local utility to support their regulatory obligations and programs.

Intel’s reaffirmed commitment to purchasing RECs and facilitating the nine solar electric installations is just the latest in Intel’s energy portfolio, which includes wind, solar, geo-thermal, small hydro-electric and biomass sources. Since 2001, Intel has invested over $45 million and completed approximately 1,500 projects to improve energy efficiency and resource conservation, saving roughly 790 million kilowatt hours of energy — enough to power nearly 69,000 average American homes for a year.3 Other highlights include:

Investments: Intel is dedicated to clean technology innovation and development.
  • As part of Intel’s broader objective to spur market demand for renewable energy, smart grid, home energy management and energy efficiency in enterprise, commercial, industrial and residential applications, Intel Capital, Intel’s global investment arm, has invested more than $150 million in approximately 20 clean technology businesses.

Operations: Intel continues to look for renewable energy and energy efficiency opportunities across its many locations.

Employee Engagement: Intel believes that employee engagement and empowerment are critical to its objective of embedding sustainability more deeply into the business.
  • Since 2008, Intel has linked a portion of every employee’s variable compensation — from front-line employees to the CEO — to the achievement of environmental sustainability metrics in three areas: energy efficiency of products, reductions in carbon footprint and energy use and improvements in environmental leadership reputation metrics.
  • As a key element of the solar installations at Intel’s facilities, awareness kiosks are set up in each site lobby to educate and engage employees in the company’s energy efforts.

Intel’s REC purchase will be handled by Sterling Planet, a national supplier of renewable energy, energy efficiency and low-carbon solutions. All purchases will be certified by the non-profit Center for Resource Solutions’ Green-e® program, which certifies and verifies green power products, and meet the requirements of the EPA Green Power Purchasing Program.

Is Unemployment as Bad as During the Great Depression?

October 25th, 2010 | No Comments

It is difficult to compare current unemployment with that during the Great Depression. In the Depression, unemployment numbers weren’t tracked very consistently, and the U-3 and U-6 statistics we use today weren’t used back then. And statistical “ad…

Daimler’s innovation unit: Thinking outside the car

October 21st, 2010 | No Comments

After its disastrous American foray, Daimler is thinking more radically

IT WAS July 4th 2007 and Jerome Guillen had spent America’s independence day climbing Mount Hood in Oregon. Back at his car, he found a voice-mail message: Dieter Zetsche, the head of Daimler, wanted to meet him urgently. When the Frenchman, then in charge of the design of a new American truck for the German carmaker, saw his boss, he was asked his thoughts on setting up an innovation unit to generate additional growth. A few days later he was given the job.

The meeting came at an important time for Daimler, which had just extracted itself from a disastrous merger with Chrysler that had sapped its creativity and damaged its Mercedes-Benz brand. Before long, recession would add to its troubles. But adversity made the company more willing to embrace some of the odder ideas that Mr Guillen and his team came up with—especially those that ran against the longstanding conventional wisdom that the way for carmakers to grow is to encourage people to buy more cars. …

Intel Announces Multi-Billion-Dollar Investment in Next-Generation Manufacturing in U.S.

October 19th, 2010 | No Comments

NEWS HIGHLIGHTS

  • Intel will spend $6-8 billion in manufacturing to support future technology advancements in Arizona and Oregon.
  • The investment supports the creation of 6,000-8,000 construction jobs and 800-1,000 permanent high-tech jobs, and also allows Intel to maintain its current manufacturing employment base at these U.S. sites.
  • The investment will fund a new development fab in Oregon, as well as upgrades to four existing fabs to manufacture the next-generation 22-nanometer (nm) process technology.
  • Intel’s next-generation, 22nm microprocessors will enable sleeker device designs, higher performance and longer battery life at lower costs.

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Oct. 19, 2010 – Intel Corporation announced today that the company will invest between $6 billion and $8 billion on future generations of manufacturing technology in its American facilities. The action will fund deployment of Intel’s next-generation 22- nanometer (nm) manufacturing process across several existing U.S. factories, along with construction of a new development fabrication plant (commonly called a “fab”) in Oregon. The projects will support 6,000 to 8,000 construction jobs and result in 800 to 1,000 new permanent high-tech jobs.

“Today’s announcement reflects the next tranche of the continued advancement of Moore’s Law and a further commitment to invest in the future of Intel and America,” said Intel President and CEO Paul Otellini.  “The most immediate impact of our multi-billion-dollar investment will be the thousands of jobs associated with building a new fab and upgrading four others, and the high-wage, high-tech manufacturing jobs that follow.”

The PC industry is achieving a significant milestone this year with 1 million PCs shipping per day. The upgraded fabs create the capacity for the continued growth of the PC market segment and additional computing markets Intel is addressing, such as mobile and embedded computing.

The new investments reinforce Intel’s leadership in the most advanced semiconductor manufacturing in the world. Intel’s brand-new development fab in Oregon – to be called “D1X” – is scheduled for R&D startup in 2013. Upgrades are also planned for a total of four existing factories in Arizona (known as Fab 12 and Fab 32) and Oregon (known as D1C and D1D).

“Intel makes approximately 10 billion transistors per second. Our factories produce the most advanced computer technology in the world and these investments will create capacity for innovation we haven’t yet imagined,” said Brian Krzanich, senior vice president and general manager of Intel’s Manufacturing and Supply Chain. “Intel and the world of technology lie at the heart of this future. Contrary to conventional wisdom, we can retain a vibrant manufacturing economy here in the United States by focusing on the industries of the future.”

While Intel generates approximately three-fourths of its revenues overseas, it maintains three-fourths of its microprocessor manufacturing in the United States. This new investment commitment also allows the company to maintain its existing manufacturing employment base at these sites.

This new capital expenditure follows a U.S. investment announcement made in February 2009 to support state-of-the-art upgrades to its manufacturing process. Those upgrades resulted in 32nm process technology which has already produced computer chips being used today in PCs, servers, embedded and mobile devices around the world. Intel’s first 22nm microprocessors, codenamed “Ivy Bridge,” will be in production in late 2011 and will boost further levels of performance and power efficiency. By continuing to advance manufacturing process technology, additional features and functions can be integrated and enable devices with sleeker designs, higher performance and longer battery life at lower costs for users.

JamBase Questionnaire: Greensky Bluegrass

September 30th, 2010 | No Comments

Welcome back to JamBase’s baker’s dozen to the bright lights of the music world. Last time we heard from Ryan Montbleau
Band
.

Without a lot of fanfare – as is the way of guys comfortable picking in parking lots, open fields and the back of
overstuffed vans – Greensky
Bluegrass
have released a strong contender for String Band Album of the Year. All Access, Vol. 1 (released May 4) is as pure
and satisfying an example of quality songwriting, strong, interlocking musicianship and savvy cover selection as any
group of pickers are likely produce in 2010.

Captured in a single night last Thanksgiving weekend at The Riviera Theatre in Three Rivers, Michigan, All
Access, Vol. 1
flows like a delighted river over the listener, the immediacy of the moment accentuated by the
intimacy of the unfussy production, which makes one feel present enough to inspire no small amount of involuntary
shufflin’ & swayin’. Their picks from others’ songbooks are choice – Dylan’s “When I Paint My Masterpiece,” The
Beatles’ “A Day In The Life,” Pink Floyd’s “Time > Breathe Reprise,” Bruce Hornsby’s “King of the Hill,” Townes Van
Zandt’s “White Freight Liner Blues” – but what really sticks are the fabulously sculpted, sharply honest originals, many
tinged with a shadowy truthfulness that sets them apart from many in the too-damn-chipper acoustic crowd. The
fast ones fly wonderfully but it’s when Greensky nestles into a ballad or exploratory simmer that one hears all their
carefully honed strengths emerge. And numbers like “Just To Lie,” “200 Miles From Montana,” “Nine Days,”
“Reverend” and lengthy but never dull ramble “All Four” more than hold their own against the top gun cover material,
and their vocal blend cheerfully suggests a streamlined descendent of The Band’s rough ‘n’ ready rightness. All
Access, Vol. 1
is the ideal handshake for listeners yet to explore this reliably excellent, hard working string
band. (Dennis Cook)

Greensky Bluegrass returns to the road in October, starting with a headlining performance at the Fox Theatre in
Boulder, CO on October 13, followed by more Colorado dates (10/14-10-16) and then onto Arizona, California,
Oregon, Washington and back towards Midwest. Find full tour dates here.

Here’s what Paul Hoffman, Greensky Bluegrass’ mandolinist, vocalist and lead songwriter, had to say to our
inquiries.

Paul Hoffman by Eric Kinnally

Instrument of choice: Mandolin, words
Nicknames: Noodle, Big City, phoffman

1. Great music rarely happens withoutÂ…
Inspiration. From other music. From Pain. From the audience.

2. The first album I bought wasÂ…
HmmÂ…probably a tape. Simpsons Sing the Blues? New Kids on the Block? Beatles? The Beatles were
probably more inspiration than the others, but who didn’t want to be bad ass like Bart? I even wore a spike for
awhile.

3. The last song or album to really flip my wig wasÂ…
Not an album or song, but the David
Rawlings Machine
in concert totally flipped me. Love the way he phrases songs and builds solos. Check
out the free
podcast
from NPR’s Tiny Desk. Maybe Eisenhower by The Slip, too. The song arrangements are
sweet and the lyrics are real unique.

4. When I was a kid I wanted to grow up to beÂ…
Who wants to grow up? A screen actor, maybe, Big Hollywood or something. Don’t think that would work now. I
really just wanted to get paid to entertain. If only I’d known. My dad always says, “A big lottery winner.” I like that,
too. Now sometimes I say, “Retired and free.”

5. My favorite sort of gig isÂ…
The fun ones. Aren’t they all? Sort of. Sometimes there’s those factors though – great and less than great; long
drive; no fans; no dinner. The gigs that surprise me are my favorite sorts of gigs, like when we threw an
unannounced show at home and a great crowd showed up. Or when we drove from San Fran to San Diego and 13
hours later we loaded into the packed club while the opener was finishing. We just decided
to go for it and it worked out. All good at 10 am? Whew. Or maybe 6am?

6. One thing I wish people knew about me isÂ…
That I’m not afraid of sentence fragments. If they’re reading. Still. The people. After all this.

7. I love the sound ofÂ…
Music. Is this a trick question? And feedback, of course. Why else would I keep trying to use delay with distortion
and an envelope filter?

8. One day I hope to make an album as fantastic asÂ…
I can. The people I admire are out of reach to me. Not in a bleak way. Records are timeless and unique in a way
that I admire more than the music itself. The idea of documenting music in a breath of its development, it’s like a
musician’s truest commitment. So, I hope mine can be as genuine as possible.

9. The best meal I ever had on tour was atÂ…
Until recently, The Red Iguana has been a tour favorite. Salt Lake City mole. I know people who take it home on dry
ice. Recently, we were able to eat at home on tour. Weird, right? Food Dance in Kalamazoo, MI has got to be my
new favorite – breakfast lunch or dinner – although, SLC, if you’re reading, have me back. I need some mole!

10. I always find the coolest audiences inÂ…
The most unexpected places. I wouldn’t alienate any of our dedicated fans, who are spread all over, by being
specific. And I couldn’t. The places where I had no idea it would go off are always the coolest. Those surprise gigs.
Something so organic about them. No expectations.

11. The worst habit I’ve picked up being on the road all the time isÂ…
What was your name again?

12. The Beatles or the Stones? Por que?
The Beatles all the way. I was raised that way and I’m backing it fully now. Guess I couldn’t get into the Stones’
songs. Being named after Paul didn’t hurt.

13. The craziest thing I ever saw wasÂ…
Ughh? Really? Who is reading this?
