IBM`s Social Business Play: 15 Reasons Why the Time Is Right

IBM announced its Social Business strategy at its Lotusphere 2011 conference in Orlando, Fla., Jan. 31. IBM introduced software, services and programs that will help organizations integrate social-networking concepts into business processes to accelerate collaboration, deepen customer relationships, generate ideas faster and enable a more effective workforce. Whether accessing applications on premise, from a mobile device or in the cloud, businesses of all sizes need to communicate and collaborate on the fly across a global network of clients, partners and employees. To fully enable a social business, IBM announced new software to help organizations socially enable their business processes using the most successful mobile devices&#151including tablets&#151such as RIM’s BlackBerry and PlayBook, Apples iPad and iPhone, the multitude of Google Android-based devices and Nokia handsets. IBM also rolled out software and services to help businesses embrace the social business models through cloud computing, including a technology preview of IBM’s cloud-based office-productivity suite. And IBM shared plans for the next release of its social software portfolio to enable social business, including a social business framework for software developers. Solid-state batteries: The power of the press

A new process will make solid-state rechargeable batteries that should greatly outperform existing ones

ELECTRONICS made a huge leap forward when the delicate and temperamental vacuum tube was replaced by the robust, reliable transistor. That change led to the now ubiquitous silicon chip. As a consequence, electronic devices have become vastly more powerful and, at the same time, have shrunk in both size and cost. Some people believe that a similar change would happen if rechargeable batteries could likewise be made into thin, solid devices. Researchers are working on various ways to do this and now one of these efforts is coming to fruition. That promises smaller, cheaper, more powerful batteries for consumer electronics and, eventually, for electric cars.

The new development is the work of Planar Energy of Orlando, Florida—a company spun out of America’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory in 2007. The firm is about to complete a pilot production line that will print lithium-ion batteries onto sheets of metal or plastic, like printing a newspaper. …

Quintron & Miss Pussycat: New Album & Tour Dates

NEW ALBUM OUT APRIL 12 VIA GONER RECORDS

Quintron and Miss Pussycat
will release their new album, Sucre Du Sauvage on April 12 via Goner Records. The album was
recorded From January 29th through May 2nd of 2010, where Quintron punched a time clock and reported to work
at the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) to write and record the album in a public gallery space. Quintron’s intent
behind the museum recording studio was not to entertain visiting museum goers with any kind of performance, but
to completely ignore them and go about the business of making this record. When needed, viewers would be pulled
into the process and used for backing vocals, hand claps, grunting, etc.

During the final seven days of recording, Quintron chose to imprison himself within the museum and its surrounding
grounds – a beautiful swampy nature preserve called Â“New Orleans City Park.Â” He would roam the park by night
making field recordings and then weave them into the final mixes of the album by day.

The NOMA sessions produced literally thousands of hours of tape. The album is the cream of that crop – the
Sucre Du Sauvage. There was no post production or overdubs. When the exhibit closed, the album was

A little-known chemical may provide a new way to clean water

IRON in water is normally regarded a pollutant. Luke Daly, the boss of Ferrate Treatment Technologies of Orlando, Florida, however, plans to turn that thought on its head. He intends to use a chemically unusual form of iron to clean water up, not make it dirty.

Iron is found in the part of the periodic table known as the transition metals. Like all metals, these react with other elements by giving up electrons to form positively charged ions. Transition metals, though, give up different numbers of electrons in different circumstances, and thus have ions of various charges. Usually, iron loses two or three electrons. But in ferrates, which are compounds of iron and oxygen with non-transition metals like sodium and calcium, it loses six. That makes ferrates extremely reactive, and it is this reactivity which Mr Daly hopes to exploit. …
