Smoking habits transmit from mom to daughter, dad to son

Smoking and drinkingFathers transmit their smoking habits to their sons, while mothers do the same for daughters. However, if a mother smokes it does not seem to induce the son to smoke, and similarly a father who smokes does not affect his daughter, says a new study. The research is based on information from the British Household [...]

Face value: John Quelch: Teaching case studies in China

The Western dean of a business school in Shanghai

AS HE left Rupert Murdoch’s office at the Sun newspaper clutching a fat cheque, John Quelch realised he was interested in business. He was a history student at Oxford and had not previously given the subject much thought. But in 1972 he stepped in to help Cherwell, the student rag, after cocky editors (for such people can occasionally be found at that university) had driven it, in his view, into the river after which it was named.

The young Mr Quelch displayed a certain chutzpah, too. He turned up at Mr Murdoch’s office with a rudimentary business plan “which wouldn’t have passed muster with any accountant”, and walked out with a sizeable sum. Cherwell’s editors were duly dispatched. One, Peter Stothard, went on to edit the Times. The other, Howard Davies, became chairman of Britain’s Financial Services Authority. Mr Quelch took over at Cherwell. …

Michelle Williams speaks about playing Marilyn Monroe in new movie

‘Brokeback Mountain’ star Michelle Williams has spoken out about her role as late actress Marilyn Monroe in a new movie. Williams, 30, is portraying the iconic blonde in ‘My Week With Marilyn’, which has just completed filming at Pinewood Studios. “I feel like we live together,” the Daily Mail quoted her as saying. She explained [...]

Artificial intelligence: No command, and control

Chaos fills battlefields and disaster zones. Artificial intelligence may be better than the natural sort at coping with it

ARMIES have always been divided into officers and grunts. The officers give the orders. The grunts carry them out. But what if the grunts took over and tried to decide among themselves on the best course of action? The limits of human psychology, battlefield communications and (cynics might suggest) the brainpower of the average grunt mean this probably would not work in an army of people. It might, though, work in an army of robots.

Handing battlefield decisions to the collective intelligence of robot soldiers sounds risky, but it is the essence of a research project called ALADDIN. Autonomous Learning Agents for Decentralised Data and Information Networks, to give its full name, is a five-year-old collaboration between BAE Systems, a British defence contractor, the universities of Bristol, Oxford and Southampton, and Imperial College, London. In it, the grunts act as agents, collecting and exchanging information. They then bargain with each other over the best course of action, make a decision and carry it out. …

SMMT jamboree

It was the SMMT’s annual dinner last night. It was held at the Hilton, Park Lane, and was the usual agreeable occasion – a few new people to meet, a few to catch up with, and the wheels of social interaction well lubricated with some quality alcohol.

There was nothing too unexpected on the business side. Outgoing SMMT president Joe Greenwell delivered a speech that highlighted the things that you would expect him to highlight: the industry in the UK hasn’t been performing too badly in the circumstances; there are some interesting technology initiatives; the SMMT has been effectively lobbying on behalf of the industry and so on. He was polished.  And it will be interesting to see how GKN’s Nigel Stein shapes up in the president’s role; GKN is a very successful British engineering company and one that has built up a solid business over many decades (not just the Constant Velocity Joints – CVJs – it is well known in this industry for; it was pretty brave to take on Airbus wings business a few years ago).

The guest speaker from outside the industry was John Humphrys – a well known journalist and broadcaster with the BBC. I have a lot of respect for the guy, who is perhaps best known for his tenacious and dogged interviewing style, which has upset more than a few slightly precious and/or slippery politicians over the years. I thought we might get something good given the circles he mixes in, the people he has interviewed and we’d hopefully get an interesting perspective on the industry from someone like him. It should be thoughtful, provocative even…

I have to say it was slightly disappointing. I’m not sure how much after dinner speaking he does, but I got the feeling it might be quite a bit; there was a formulaic feel to the anecdotes and some of them weren’t really all that funny – oddly distasteful even – and fell a bit flat. And then he dredged up some of the UK auto industry’s unhappy history, which I don’t think we really wanted to hear about for the umpteen millionth time on an occasion such as this. I also don’t quite believe that today’s ten-year-olds are more interested in average CO2 than top speed, supercars, 0-60 and so on. Have ‘Top Trumps’ cards changed much lately? I doubt it. Lighten up John! And ‘know your audience’ – easy to say I know, but he was not quite coming across as the sure-footed cerebral operator many of us would have expected. Maybe I set my expectations too high.

Anyway, well done to SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt for wrapping up the proceedings very succinctly afterwards (no over-the-top presentation about how great the SMMT is) and giving everyone plenty of time to mingle. And I should say thanks again to my table hosts at xchanging – a business process services company that is into outsourcing. They are also big into sponsoring the annual ‘boat race’ we have here (a quaint and slightly eccentric sporting affair, two rowing teams from Cambridge and Oxford universities head-to-head in rowing gigs, racing down the Thames – it gets huge national media coverage considering what it is; long may this wonderful example of British daftness continue).

UK: Next SMMT president is GKN’s Nigel Stein

A picture of automotive Britain

Pictures have been released from the UK’s Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT),which has teamed up with professional and student photographers.

“From design and development, to manufacture and retail across components, cars, buses and commercial vehicles, the UK has one of the world’s most diverse automotive sectors,” said SMMT chief executive, Paul Everitt.

“These unique images give an up-to-date view of the work and people involved in one of the UK’s most important industries.”

Photographs include shots of the finishing line at the Mini Plant in Oxford, Vauxhall’s body-in-white plant at Ellesmere Port near Liverpool, Nissan’s ultra-modern Rotunda design studio in Paddington, the new climatic wind tunnel of the MIRA vehicle test facility near Nuneaton, as well as visuals of Ford’s wind turbines that power the Dagenham Diesel Centre (DDC) in Essex.

A history of parcel bombs: Going postal

Sending explosives through the post has a long and murky history

PRINTER cartridges and air freight may be new, but lethal missives are not. The Bandbox Plot of November 4th 1712, foiled by Jonathan Swift (author of “Gulliver’s Travels”), was an attempt to kill Robert Harley, Earl of Oxford and Lord Treasurer. A hatbox left at his door was configured to fire cocked pistols when the lid was lifted.

On January 19th 1764 a Danish diarist, Bolle Willum Luxdorph, described perhaps the first successful parcel bomb. A Colonel Poulsen received a box by post. “When he opens it, therein is to be found gunpowder and a firelock which sets fire unto it, so he became very injured.” …

Nov. 1, 1909: ‘The Machine Stops’

1909: E.M. Forster publishes “The Machine Stops,” a chilling tale of a futuristic information-oriented society that grinds to a bloody halt, literally. Some aspects of the story no longer seem so distant in the future.
“The Machine Stops” appeared in the November issue of The Oxford and Cambridge Review. At 12,000-plus words, it’s sometimes called [...]

Is Unemployment as Bad as During the Great Depression?

It is difficult to compare current unemployment with that during the Great Depression. In the Depression, unemployment numbers weren’t tracked very consistently, and the U-3 and U-6 statistics we use today weren’t used back then. And statistical “ad…
