PA resolution evokes countrywide protests

LAHORE/KARACHI/QUETTA – Journalists staged protest demonstrations and observed Black Day across the country on Saturday to condemn the resolution passed by the Punjab Assembly against media.
Forceful rallies were taken out by journalists in almost all cities and towns including Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, Karachi, Sukkur, Peshawar, Quetta, Sargodha, Jhelum, Taxila, Attock, Hafizabad, Gujranwala, Sheikhupura, Chiniot, Rehim Yar Khan, Bahawalpur, Bhakkar, Hyder-abad, Abbottabad, Nawabs-hah, Badin, Dera Ghazi Khan, Chaman, Nasirabad besides Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley and Mirpur in Azad Kashmir.
A demonstration was held outside the National Press Club in Islamabad where the office-bearers of journalistsÂ’ bodies of the twin cities raised their voice against gaggling tactics. The participants chanted slogans against the Punjab government, demanding withdrawal of the resolution against media.
The call for protest and black day was given by Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) which had taken exception to the said resolution and stated that it was a calculated move to divert attention from the real issues confronting the country.
In Lahore, a large number of media men gathered in front of Punjab Assembly to record their protest against the resolution. Leaders of political and religious parties and NGOs also joined the protest to express solidarity with the journalists.
Speakers on the occasion pledged to continue the protests till withdrawal of the said resolution, saying it was their duty to make the public aware of the facts.
Participants were carrying placards and banners inscribed with slogans against the Punjab government.
Speaking on the occasion, President Council of Newspaper Editors (CPNE) Khushnood Ali Khan said the CPNE was with the journalists and the Council has decided not to hold dialogue with Punjab government over the issue and their simple demand was to withdraw the resolution. He said that journalists should boycott the ceremonies and programmes held under the aegis of the Punjab government.
President of Punjab Assembly Press Gallery, Zaheer Shahzad said the resolution was like a drone attack on media men. Parliamentarians called names to the journalists and disgraced them but no action was taken against them so far, he said.
He said they would not join any committee formed by the Punjab government in this regard. He said the meeting would be held on Monday (tomorrow) to chalk out future strategy for the protest programme.
Secretary General of the Lahore Press Club Ziaullah Niazi said the resolution was condemnable and rulers had tried to scare the media men but they would not be cowed down.
He demanded of the government to take action against bogus degrees holders and recover the money from them, which they had drawn from the national exchequer.
Chairman APNEC Nasir Naqvi said the resolution had been passed only to hush up the issues like bogus degrees, price-hike and unemployment.
He said the Punjab government had issued no show-cause notice to the responsible persons so far.
Rai Husnain, President of PUJ, said it was duty of the media to inform the people about the critical facts of the society like bogus degrees of the Parliamentarians. Punjab government should take action against those who had been involved in bogus degrees rather than media.
Secretary General of PUJ Rana Azeem and President, Lahore Press Club Sarmad Bashir also spoke on the occasion.
Those who joined media men to express solidarity with journalists included Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Jamiat-i-Ulema-e-Islam, PML(Q) and other parties.
The media union leaders, blasted the movers of the resolution and said they did not want merit to prevail in the entire spectrum of the country.
The movers of the resolution also wants to subjugate the media so that the real voice of the people might remain gagged and privileged might continue to enjoy all sorts of facilities although illegally.
Meanwhile, the journalists chanted slogans against Punjab government and blocked the Mall Road for traffic.
The journalists community of Karachi took out a protest rally while observing Black Day against the resolution passed in the Punjab Assembly against the media.
Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ) took out a rally from Press Club to Sindh Assembly building. The civil society and others also attended the rally.
The protesters were carrying placards inscribed with slogans against the resolution and Punjab government. They staged sit-in outside Assembly building.
When the rally reached the building, Sindh Information Minister Jameel Soomro, MQM leaders and MNA Haidar Abbas Rizvi and MPA Khawaja Izharul Hassan and others joined the rally showing solidarity with the journalists.
KUJ President Khursheed Abbasi, General Secretary Hassan Abbas, senior journalist Khursheed Tanveer, President of Karachi Press Club Imtiaz Ahmed Faran and others addressed the rally.
The speakers strongly denounced the resolution of Punjab Assembly and termed it an attempt against free and independent media. They alleged the Punjab govt had passed the said resolution to divert peopleÂ’s attention from big issues like bomb blasts at Data Darbar, violation of IRSA agreement, fake degrees issue and many other such issues.
They urged the Punjab Assembly to withdraw the resolution and also appealed other political parties including PPP to play their role in this regard.
Meanwhile, MQM leaders assured the journalists that they would table a resolution in Sindh Assembly to condemn the resolution.
Meanwhile, activists of Balochistan Union of Journalists (BUJ) staged a demonstration outside Press Club to protest against the passage of a resolution in Punjab Assembly against the media.
The protesters carrying placards inscribed with different demands chanted slogans against the Punjab government and demanded immediate withdrawal of the resolution.
Addressing on the occasion, BUJ President Abdul Khaliq Rind and others strongly condemned the move and said the resolution was an attempt to suppress the media.
They vowed not to be succumbed to any pressure, saying they would continue to inform the people about the realities.

Motion Potion: Electric Nostalgia Tour and Silent Soundclash Series

Motion Potion challenges America’s DJs to a “Silent Soundclash”
Wireless headphones from Silent Events propel a 2-channel Silent Disco battle in U.S. clubs

Motion Potion

For more than a decade, Motion Potion has been pushing “Electric Nostalgia,” a style that unites the past 40 years of dance music with its present and future. This spring he’ll be recruiting a battalion of DJs to help push the concept at “Silent Soundclashes” across America. With the help of hundreds of Silent Events wireless headphones, MoPo will be joined by DJs in 20 different markets for dance-floor excursions that put the choice in the hands of the listener. The Soundclash concept goes back to the earliest days of DJing in Jamaica and New York, where DJs would face off at free outdoor events in “winner takes the soundsystem” battles. “The “Silent Soundclash Series” updates this concept and allows the listener to choose with the flip of a channel switch.

“The Silent Soundclash Series” is a step towards the potential fulfillment of the long-term promise of the “Silent Disco” concept. What started as a way for festivals like Bonnaroo and Glastonberry to run late-night parties is headed towards a day when an urban house party could rock on without waking the neighbors. Using Silent Events’ patented headphones not only allows the best in wireless sound (on their own unique FCC-approved band) but also the ability to switch channels, allowing two DJs to rock a party head-to-head. The partygoer will no longer have to “choose with his feet” by leaving the dance floor but rather just change the station.

“Rocking the “Silent Disco” at Bonnaroo the past four years has been an incredible musical and social experience.” said MoPo “With this tour we’re bringing that amazing vibe right into people’s hometowns and allowing their favorite local DJs to participate in the experiment and join the fun.”

The “Silent Soundclash Series” will take place in the middle of Motion Potion’s Spring 2010 “Electric Nostalgia” Tour, coinciding with the release of a series of three “Electric Nostalgia EP’s” and the launch of the new online community at www.motionpotion.com. The first “Silent Soundclashes” will take place at WMC Miami and will continue on for more than a month across the Eastern United States. MoPo will then head back towards San Francisco to play a series of shows with electronic legends like Tipper, NAPT and Fort Knox 5.

Alberta Cross/Hacienda | 02.08 | PA

Words & Images by: Jake Krolick

Alberta Cross/Hacienda :: 02.08.10 :: Kyber Pass :: Philadelphia, PA

Alberta Cross :: 02.08 :: Philly

Sneaking into Philadelphia between two massive snowstorms was no easy task. Yet, San Antonio rockers Hacienda and Brooklyn-based rising stars Alberta Cross pulled it off without as much as a hitch. Alberta Cross was the driving force that packed the Kyber Pass to the gills with a well bundled posse of onlookers and fans on a snowy Monday night. This Philly show was the tour closer before Alberta Cross packed their bags for Europe, and it was clear from the start how much practice and heavy touring have paid off.

Opening many of the shows on this tour was aforementioned Hacienda. No slouches themselves, these guys were plucked by The Black Keys‘ blues rock virtuoso Dan Auerbach. He produced the band’s debut album, Loud Is the Night, and recruited them to play as the backing band on his solo effort, Keep it Hid. Playing with Auerbach has definitely impacted the sound of Hacienda. Their set came out of left field as a lively, throwback garage rock romp that complimented Alberta Cross’ psychedelic blues beautifully. Hacienda was powered by a trio of brothers – Abraham (keys), Jamie (drums) and Rene Villanueva (bass) – all originally from way up in the Pacific Northwest now transplanted to San Antonio.

These fiery Texans offered more pizzazz and gusto on a Monday night than most bands can muster on a Saturday. The spunk exhibited and dynamics between guitarist Dante Schwebel and the Villanueva brothers accentuated all the various things that live music dreams are made of. These guys had a strut to their playing and they showed it from the opening tune, a smoldering, bass-driven builder that bounced with Rene’s bass whacks and dirty echoing strums from Schwebel. Their raw riffs brawled with sleek ’60s harmonies that flowered from Abraham’s electric organ. The band rattled off three homespun songs that recalled the likes of The Beach Boys and Dr. Dog before raging on a cover of “Louie Louie.” Abraham was right on when he said that this cover was a version all their own. It was a rowdy reading smothered in red sauce and Tex-Mex styling that would have made Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs proud. “Hear Me Crying” showcased one of Hacienda’s melodic, heartfelt rockers, offering an even greater depth to their danceable rock sounds. They finished the set with “Mama’s Cookin” dedicated to their friends Dr. Dog. This tune sounded as if it could have been a Dr. Dog song as Schwebel and Rene drenched the rock ‘n roll standard in a passion that made our pulses rise as they plowed through the raw metaphor for gettin’ it on.

Hacienda :: 02.08 :: Philly

With a few feet of snow blanketing the streets outside, the bar quickly became a sardine tin. The crowd was anxious for Alberta Cross, a band that seemingly sprung up from nowhere. I had caught one of their first large gigs at the Camden Download Festival in 2008 with few in attendance. Their latest tour has been a whirlwind as they traveled North America in support of their debut album, Broken Side of Time. In Santa Barbara the venue was so packed that they played two separate sets for two different crowds. They sold out L.A.’s Troubadour, Schubas in Chicago and The Basement in Columbus. DC, NYC, VT – almost every show on this tour was packed or sold out. As we listened to them work a very traditional blues rock sound it was easy to see why the crowds love them.

Onstage, Alberta Cross lives up to everything you hear on their albums and then some. Petter Ericson Stakee, their ex-Swede frontman, sung with one of the clearest and most listenable crowd friendly tones since Kings of Leon and Jim James (My Morning Jacket). His prevailing approach lacked grit or throatiness as his voice poured out pure, clear excitement. Stakee’s performance showed that he’s an accessible frontman whose range is a star-crossed version of a slew of artists past but still tells his own story. He can hit the high notes without trouble plus he has that cadenced knack that makes a singer great.

Alberta Cross :: 02.08 :: Philly

Just like their leader, the band produced a most comfortably familiar sound that hearkened back to many different decades. Listening to the cool ’70s folk rock fused with guitar blues of “Lucy Rider” was like settling into your favorite pair of sweatpants. Even the people not there for the show took notice and left their spots at the bar to see what was going down. Apparently, Alberta Cross had played a gig at the Kyber Pass before and when Stakee inquired who was here years ago, to his delight several people applauded before he wound us through another pleasing passageway filled with bent guitar riffs and even more evocative singing. The intense guitar solos on “ATX” and the grimy, ringing sound of “The Thief and the Heartbreaker” surely melted snow on all sides of the venue. These were clearly the crowd favorites that silenced the repeated shouts from spectators not satisfied with the setlist until they had a chance to sing-along.

There were tender sides of Alberta Cross during “Low Man” and raging moments during “Broken Side of Time.” Both were fun and satisfying, but it was “Rise from the Shadows,” described as a gospel tune by Stakee, that truly stirred the blood and separated the men from the boys. He stoked the front row as he leaned over his mic stand and dipped his torso into the crowd. Stakee, silhouetted by a lone orange light that played tricks with the brim of his Stetson hat, banged on a tambourine and kept the tempo at a slow stroll while Alec Higgins sashayed along on the keys during an extended intro. Then, building like a rogue wave in the ocean, Terry Wolfers trudged in with some ridiculously hard thudding bass, producing blasts from the stacks that made us actually feel the music. The twisted gospel song caught us by surprise and a cheer erupted as they woke up the sleeping rock & roll giant and paraded it around the cramped venue. It was a perfect shift in styles, moving the music from a lulling gospel number to a head shaking, thrust inducing screamer of a rock song. Stakee lurched back towards drummer Austin Beede and then over to lock horns with Sam Kearney‘s guitar. This lively exchange grew and grew, making the seven-minute album version fade into oblivion as they rocked us for over fourteen minutes.

The guy next to me kept muttering how this band has teeth, and he was right. Alberta Cross was able to connect with the audience and perform better than we could have hoped. Before calling it a night, Stakee and company jumped back onstage to leave the rest of their energy in a two-song encore. After laying down a wonderful tour closer in Philly, they played a surprise set a few nights latter at the former CBGB’s with Guns N’ Roses (details here). Their next visit to Philadelphia is in April at the TLA, so those who saw Alberta Cross in February should feel lucky because I’m guessing that this was one of the last times they will play a stage that small.

After their summer tour with Old Crow Medicine Show, the Brothers got back to the small clubs in the Mid-Atlantic area, where they seem most at home.

This was their second trek to Lancaster, PA, and at the first show less than a year ago they drew maybe 75 people. Once we arrived at the glorified basement that is the Chameleon Club, it was clear that their non-stop touring has paid off in new fans as the line was out the door, making for a packed house on a Labor Day weekend Saturday night. Willy Mason opened the show, sharing his singer-songwriter thoughts on everything from pickup trucks to chasing girls. For the last couple of songs he was joined by the Felices, and once they settled in they fleshed out Mason’s songs, pushing the sound throughout the room.

The Brothers came out to lots of whoops and hollers. A few friendly fans had set them up with some beers at the front of the stage, and away we went. With dark, ominous tones oozing from James Felice‘s organ, they tore into “Greatest Show On Earth.” It was an impressive performance, full of nuance set against Christmas‘ big, booming bass. After the strong opener they dipped into “Two Hands,” a Townes Van Zandt composition that talks about filling your life with Jesus so you’re not “gonna think about trouble anymore.”

Up next was “Cooperstown,” with lead singer Ian Felice and James’ accordion taking center stage. A very literal song about baseball and Ty Cobb, everyone paid rapt attention as the accordion wheezed out a tale from 1905. James always seems to have some whiskey on his keyboards, as he did tonight, but he wanted to share, so before he took off on “Whiskey in my Whiskey,” he asked the audience to “pass it around the whole room.”

Each member got the chance to sing this evening. With Simone Felice gone from the band, it appears as if it is becoming more democratic. Greg Farley, he of the washboard and fiddle and cheerleader extraordinaire, sang his “Song for Gramps.” Bassist Christmas remained impenetrable, scowling most of the time onstage except for his turn at the mic on a new song.

With Willy Mason joining the boys for the latter half, playing anything he could find onstage, they drove through some of their most frantic material – “Take this Bread,” “Chicken Wire” and “Helen Fry.” They did debut a new song, “Marie,” which was quite beautiful, and each member sang a verse. They closed the show with “Chicken Run,” featuring Farley splashing water throughout the crowd.

It was a pretty standard performance by the group, though with some new songs being added to the mix. While standard, the interplay between the musicians is one of their selling points. Not only are they excellent players and writers, they sure are having fun and it’s contagious.

The Felice Brothers are on tour now; dates available here.
