The rise of Big Solar: Growing pains

The price of solar panels is falling fast enough to hurt Western manufacturers, but it is not yet low enough to make the sun a competitive source of electricity

SOLAR power has become an unlovely adolescent. It used to be a sweet little thing, shiny and new and full of promise. One day it will doubtless grow into a solid citizen, quite possibly a person of substance. At the moment it is stuck in between; no longer a child to be coddled and pampered, but not yet able to pay its own way. This presents a challenge both for the governments who want to see it grow up big and strong, and the companies that have been making money out of its progress to date. No one doubts that it will continue to grow; the question is who will suffer most from the growing pains.

Solar energy is popular because it is clean and abundant. The problem is that it remains expensive. According to recent calculations by the International Energy Agency, power from photovoltaic systems (solar cells) costs $200-600 a megawatt-hour, depending on the efficiency of the installation and the discount rate applied to future output. That compares with $50-70 per MWh for onshore wind power in America, by the IEA’s reckoning, and even lower prices for power from fossil fuels, unless taxes on greenhouse-gas emissions are included. The costs of solar are dropping; in some sunny places it may, in a few years, be possible to get solar electricity as cheaply from a set of panels as from the grid, and later on for solar to compete with conventional ways of putting electricity into the grid. But for the moment there would be no significant market for solar cells were it not for government subsidies. …

Surfer Blood & Pains of Being Pure At Heart: Summer Tour Dates

SURFER BLOOD WILL EMBARK ON A 2-WEEK U.S. TOUR THIS SUMMER

JOINING THE PAINS OF BEING PURE AT HEART AND HOORAY FOR EARTH

Surfer Blood

Surfer Blood‘s critically
acclaimed debut record Astro Coast is an album’s worth of catchy, summery indie songs that even
the most hook-laden power pop band would rightfully be jealous of. Still in their early twenties, Surfer Blood has already
appeared on late night television and has received rave reviews from publications such as Spin, Rolling
Stone
, Vanity Fair among many others. The New York Times spoke highly of Astro Coast by calling it, “An endearing melange of 1950s chord progressions, Afropop guitar filigree and
grunge buildups heading for power-pop choruses.” While online tastemakers Pitchfork called the album
“irresistibly catchy.” Astro Coast is out now on Kanine Records. Surfer Blood will release a limited Record
Store day 7″ for “Take It Easy” live featuring Marnie Stern. In May, Surfer Blood will release a “Swim” 7″ featuring the Allen of
Baroness remix and will tour the U.K.

The Pains of Being Pure at
Heart
is touring in support of their new single, “Say No To Love” (Slumberland Records). Having just
returned from a month overseas, hitting Japan, Australia, and New Zealand, we find the Pains planning the recording of
the LP follow up to last year’s critically acclaimed self-titled debut. The single is due to hit iTunes and stores on
June 8.

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart Announce

Higher Than The Stars EP Plus The Single Come Saturday

Not content to rest on the laurels of having one of the best and most talked-about albums of 2009, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart are back with the Higher Than The Stars. The EP features four brand-new songs that do what the band does best – breathe fresh life into indie-pop with their exuberance, charm and of course quality tunes.

Higher Than The Stars races along on arpeggiated keyboards and quickly strummed guitars, a perfect pop
nugget that could be ripped from Robert Smith‘s songbook. Its unstoppable energy is pure Pains, though,
and the band hopes to see a lot of ear-to-ear grins when the band busts the EP out on tour.
