A feast of drawings in New York
“Old Master drawings offer a special and intimate relationship with artists and their thoughts that paintings cannot provide,” says George Abrams, a prominent Boston-based lawyer. His celebrated collection of 17th-century Dutch drawings began modestly in the early 1960s. (Although he and his late wife gave 110 of their works to Harvard’s Fogg Museum, his walls were not left bare and he continues to buy.) In late January, Mr Abrams was among a band of passionate and astute drawing collectors, curators and dealers in New York. They were lured to the city by a cluster of important events: specialist auctions at Christie’s and Sotheby’s; selling shows at the 22 galleries participating in “Master Drawings New York” (from January 23rd to the 30th), and the opening of two outstanding exhibitions, “The Drawings of Bronzino” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and “Rome After Raphael” at the Morgan Library.
At the Bronzino show, nearly all of his 61 surviving drawings are on view. Amazingly this is the first ever exhibition devoted to the 16th-century Florentine. It was arranged in collaboration with the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, which loaned many works including the strong but sombre “Study for a Portrait of a Seated Man” (see slideshow below). At the Morgan Library, the exhibition features works on paper chosen almost entirely from its own world-famous collection, including drawings by Raphael, Michelangelo, Parmigianino and Palma Giovane. …

Weather aids Canary blaze effort

Cooler temperatures are helping firefighters tackle forest fires that have burned for four days on La Palma in Spain’s Canary Islands.
Rain and lighter winds meant teams had brought one of two fires under control, local authorities said.
They hoped to contain the other later in the day, they said.
The fires have forced 4,000 people from their homes and destroyed dozens of houses. Firefighters have come from across Spain to help extinguish them.
On Sunday Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero visited the island and promised compensation for those who were forced to evacuate.

Julio Cabrera, La Palma’s environmental director, said the fire in the west of the island was under control. Work to contain the one in the east was ongoing.
The fires were not directly threatening any towns or villages, he said, and no new evacuations were planned.
Six hundred firefighters backed by nine water-carrying planes were working to contain the flames, he said.
The fires, which began on Friday, were fanned by strong winds over the weekend.
Several dozen homes in the town of Fuencaliente were gutted. Groups of tourists have been unable to catch flights home because of road closures.
La Palma is a small, relatively undeveloped island, with a resident population of about 85,000.
It is renowned as one of the greenest of the Canary Islands, but its vegetation has been seared by high temperatures in recent days.
Smaller fires have broken out on other Canary Islands, including Tenerife and Gran Canaria, but are expected to be brought under control soon.

Fires rage across Canary island

A huge forest fire is out of control on one of the Canary Islands, forcing the evacuation of up to 4,000 people, including tourists.
Two military planes, six helicopters and 500 firemen are fighting the flames on La Palma, which have been spread by strong winds and high temperatures.
Some residents were saved just minutes before fire engulfed their homes.
There are fears the flames could spread to an observatory housing the world’s largest telescope.
The Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory was only inaugurated last month.
The worst fires are around the towns of Fuencaliente and Mazo, both popular with tourists.
Dozens have been unable to catch flights home because of road closures.
La Palma is a small, relatively undeveloped island, with a resident population of about 85,000.
It is dominated by a dormant volcano, and is renowned as one of the greenest of the Canary Islands. But its lush vegetation has been seared by the high temperatures of recent days.
Smaller fires have broken out on other Canary Islands, including La Gomera, Tenerife, and Gran Canaria, but are expected to be brought under control soon.
Many parts of Gran Canaria were destroyed by a massive fire two years ago. </p

Funeral held for Spain bomb dead
A funeral has been held for the two policemen killed by a car bomb on the Spanish island of Majorca on Thursday.
The service, in the Majorcan capital Palma, was attended by Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero and members of the royal family.
The attack was the second in 48 hours. Both have been blamed on the Basque separatist group, Eta.
Also on Friday, police made a public appeal for help in tracing six people they believed to be Eta members.
A minute’s silence was also held across Spain in memory of the dead.
Map of where the bomb struckThe two Civil Guards – Carlos Saenz de Tejada Garcia and Diego Salva Lesaun – were given full military honours at the joint ceremony in Palma.
Mr Zapatero placed the medals of honour on their coffins as they lay in the chapel of the cathedral.
Ramon Socias, the Spanish government’s delegate to the Balearic Islands, told reporters the men had "placed all their hopes in being members of the Civil Guards, in serving the public".

He said they had been "killed for no reason, because of the barbarity of a few thugs who don’t represent anybody, who I believe don’t even represent themselves".
Deputy Prime Minister Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega said she repeated the government’s "absolute condemnation" of the attacks.
"I reiterate that together we are going to win the fight against the terrorists. We will finish them. And we are going to do it together and within the limits of our rights," she said.
The Spanish interior ministry has also released the names and photographs of six people they described as "suspected terrorists".
The BBC’s Steve Kingstone, in Madrid, said it was not clear whether the four men and two women were directly linked to the bombings, but that police are under pressure to make arrests.
Deadliest attack
The men were killed when a bomb exploded underneath the patrol car they were sitting outside the El Foc barracks in Palmanova, security officials said.

Several people were also injured by the powerful explosion on the busy road, which sent the vehicle flying through the air and set it on fire.
The attacks took place on the eve of the 50th anniversary of Eta’s founding and, while there has been no claim of responsibility for the attack yet, Mr Zapatero said it bore all the hallmarks of the Basque separatist group.
The Majorca attack came a day after another car bomb destroyed much of a police barracks in the northern city of Burgos and left more than 50 people slightly wounded.
Thursday’s attack was the deadliest since two Spanish undercover policemen were shot during an operation in south-western France in December 2007.
Eta has been held responsible for more than 820 deaths during its campaign for an independent homeland in Spain’s Basque region.
For many months Spaniards have been told by their government that Eta is historically weak, following the arrest of a string of alleged commanders of its military wing, says our correspondent.
But the past 48 hours have provided chilling evidence to the contrary, he adds, and Eta appears to be making a statement – that it has the capability to strike anywhere.

LA PALMA, Canary Islands (AP) — One of the world’s most powerful telescopes opened its shutters for the first time Friday to begin exploring faint light from distant parts of the universe.
