Everyone loves Hollywood sex scenes. Sure, we have cheap abundant pornography in our enlightened age, and a secretive bedroom in which to peruse it, but surely there’s still nothing quite so pleasantly surprising – and oddly, more arousing – than sitting, watching a film and suddenly being confronted with a sly bit of skin. Not [...]

Weighing a kilogram: The constant gardeners
Metrologists will soon try to redefine the scientific world’s unit of mass
“HOW much does a kilogram weigh these days?” may sound an odd question. Does a kilogram not weigh just that, a kilogram? In fact, a kilogram is the mass of a cylindrical lump of platinum-iridium alloy that was cast in 1879 in Hatton Garden, the jewellery district of London, and then dispatched to the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) in Sevres, near Paris. It sits there still, nestled beneath three cheese-domelike bell jars in a safe that can be unlocked (though it rarely is) only by turning a set of three keys, each entrusted to a high-ranking BIPM dignitary.
Despite such precautions, the international prototype does not rest entirely unperturbed. On those occasions when it has been compared with some of its official copies, discrepancies of up to 69 micrograms—slightly smaller than a grain of sand—have been observed (see chart). Since there is no reason to believe that “the” kilogram is inherently more stable than any of its cousins, it is either shedding weight through wear and tear or putting it on through chemical processes such as those involved in cleaning the thing. …
Kate Moss in racy video
Supermodel Kate Moss has featured in possibly one of her raciest shoots, which has been turned into a pop video. She looks sensual as she hitches up her skirt and pulls up her top to reveal her inners in the video. The 37-year-old appears to be playing a hooker, wearing white pants, a black Dolce [...]

Damon Feldman, CEO of the Hollywood Boxing Federation, wants the Tinseltown baddies to take part in a high-profile celebrity prize fight — and he’s more than willing to make the event worth their while. Britney Spears Re-Hires Boyfriend Jason Trawick As Agent
Britney Spears’ boyfriend, Jason Trawick, is the pop star’s agent again eight months after he resigned, deciding to keep their relationship strictly personal. The “Circus” hitmaker, 29, began dating Trawick in early 2009 and he stepped down from his post as her representative last May so the pair could focus on their romance. This week, [...]
Chasing cars
News that the French Gendarmerie Nationale is to kit itself out with the rather sporty Megane RS model reminds me of a time I spent in the back of a Paris police car.
I hasten to add it wasn’t my fault. I’d been er, done over by a group of ne’er-do-wells after taking the wrong fork in the Metro en route to Charles-de-Gaulle airport – not a mistake I’ll be making again.
Anyway, after being involuntarily relieved of my passport, phone and work items, two gendarmes found me and asked incredulously what I was doing in such a tough neighbourhood – a stone’s throw from the Stade de France.
Kindly they said they would take me to the airport after going to the station to give a statement – and sort out how I was going to get home without a passport – but as we were driving – a Peugeot 308 from recollection – the car in front jumped the lights leading our driver to put his siren on and give chase.
I held on avoiding the CS gas canister that was rolling about as the police Peugeot tore ahead – reflecting that 20min ago I should have checked in. After stopping the speedster and calling another patrol car, we went back to the station.
A few minutes after we were there, a fire engine roared up and several ‘pompiers’ dragged out some more individuals who were clearly not best pleased with the turn of events.
That will be – hopefully – my one and only experience of French police – although these were the smart, cap-wearing variety. At the Paris Motor Show last autumn, there must have been nearly 20 vans loaded with the CRS variety in their paramilitary uniforms as President Sarkozy arrived for a visit. Not to be messed with.

Grateful Dead: Europe Â’72 Tour Box Set
INDIVIDUALLY NUMBERED, LIMITED EDITION COLLECTION
AVAILABLE EXCLUSIVELY AT DEAD.NET AND SHIPS IN SEPTEMBER
![]() sketch of new box set |
Grateful Dead slipped the
shores of America and crossed the pond for its first-ever major European tour in April 1972. The legendary 22-
show run spawned Europe ’72, a live triple album that remains one of the band’s best-selling and most
beloved releases. A tour this momentous deserves a boxed set of historic proportions and Dead.net has stamped your passport to relive every note from the European tour
with Europe ’72: The Complete Recordings, an individually numbered, limited edition collection
that includes more than 60 discs with over 70 hours of music featuring every show from what is arguably the
Grateful Dead’s greatest tour. The box set ships in September.
Europe ’72: The Complete Recordings is housed in a replica steamer trunk reminiscent of the ones
prevalently used at the time. The travel
chest contains tour memorabilia, a coffee-table book with never-before-seen photos, and a comprehensive essay
by noted Dead author Blair Jackson. Each performance will also be accompanied by an essay specific to
the show written by top Dead scholars including David Gans, Gary Lambert, Nicholas Meriwether, and
Steve Silberman.
Jeffrey Norman, the primary mixer of the Dead’s archival multi-track material for the past 15 years, is
mixing each
show from the original 16-track recordings.
Due to ship in September, the boxed set is available exclusively from Dead.net, which is taking orders now. The
price of the collection is $450, which works out to the remarkably low price of about $20 for each show, or roughly
the cost of a transatlantic flight from New York City to London in 1972 (price of time machine not included).
The first 3,000 fans to order will have
their copy personalized with a name requested by the purchaser. Once the 3,000 order goal is reached by April 1,
Dead.net will continue to take orders through the summer but will limit production of the collection to a maximum
of 7,200 pieces, all of which will be individually numbered. Orders will no longer be taken at some date (to be
determined) later in the summer.
The tour offers a snapshot of a band at the top of its game, still ascending in the wake of three straight hit albums—
Workingman’s Dead, American Beauty, and the live Grateful Dead (“Skull & Roses”). It had been a
year since
the lineup had gone to its single-drummer configuration, six months since Keith Godchaux had been
broken in as the group’s exceptional pianist, and this marked the first tour to feature Donna Godchaux as
a member of the touring band.
There was a ton of new, unreleased material that came into the repertoire in the fall of ’71 and during the spring of
’72, including “Tennessee Jed,” “Jack Straw,” “Mexicali Blues,” “Comes A Time,” “Ramble On Rose,” “One More
Saturday Night,” “Black-Throated Wind,” “Looks Like Rain” and Pigpen‘s “Chinatown Shuffle,” “The Stranger
(Two
Souls In Communion)” and “Mr. Charlie.” (Sadly, this was Pigpen’s final tour.) All those future classics were
interspersed with songs from the aforementioned “hit” albums—such as “Uncle John’s Band,” “Casey Jones,” “Sugar
Magnolia,” “Bertha,” and “Not Fade Away”—and then were topped off by loads of big jamming numbers—the Europe
’72 tour produced spectacular versions of “Dark Star,” “The Other One,” “Playing in the Band,” “Truckin’,” “China Cat
Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” “Good Lovin’,” “Lovelight,” and even the early Pig chestnut “Caution.”
