Passion Pit :: 12.10.09 :: Mezzanine :: San Francisco, CA

Passion Pit :: 12.10 :: San Francisco

What a difference a year makes. Once Passion Pit took the stage at Mezzanine, it was obvious that the last year of touring and music making had paid off. Michael Angelakos (lead vocals, keys), Ian Hultquist (guitar, keys), Ayad Al Adhamy (samples, synth), Jeff Apruzzese (bass, synth bass) and Nate Donmoyer (drums) make up the energetic, enterprising electronic collective from Cambridge, Massachusetts. However, it wasn’t always a five-piece ensemble. Passion Pit started out with Angelakos making his sweetheart a Valentine’s Day CD (Chunk of Change EP) back in 2007. From there he decided to disperse the EP amongst students and friends at Emerson College. It didn’t take very long for people to catch onto his infectious sound, energetic voice, and memorable lyrics. Angelakos then teamed up with some fellow musicians and started touring and amassing a huge following. In early 2009, they put out their first full album, Manners, as a follow up to Angelakos’ 2008 EP.

When I first heard the EP, I was hooked. Every single song is upbeat, fun, danceable, and approachable – perfect for a pre-party or a late night dance session and always a guaranteed good time. When I found out the guys were playing at Sasquatch! (JamBase review) last spring I was beyond excited and ready to get loose. Unfortunately, they ended up playing in the middle of a sweltering hot day on a huge outdoor stage. Needless to say, a LOT was lost from this performance. Angelakos’ voice was completely strained (almost gone actually), and because I consider his high pitched, spirited voice the most important instrument of all, the songs suffered.

This summer I was able to catch them again at Melt! Festival in Germany (JamBase review) and thankfully, they had been slated at the perfect time slot and stage. They were the last performance on the last night in a dance tent. This was a great performance but it was clear they were still learning how to be a unit, how to be seamless onstage.

Passion Pit :: 12.10 :: San Francisco

Finally, at Mezzanine, a whole new band emerged. They looked completely put together, cohesive, fashion forward even. The earlier performances seemed like a group of highly talented technology/music geeks thrown together in a bit of a disheveled mess. Now, they are 100-percent Passion Pit. Angelakos sounded fantastic. His voice was pitch perfect – not strained, never wavering, very solid. Each of the gajillion instruments was on point, as well – shakers, bells, various percussion toys, clap tracks and more. Speaking of their clap track, it honestly has to be one of the best in the business. They have that DIALED IN. They looked like they were having a riot up there, too. Dancing around to their own songs, silently miming the words while Angelakos belted them out. Really fantastic.

The venue was stunning for these guys as well – intimate, danceable, dark. They opened up with “Make Like” and immediately hooked the crowd. They continued on with “Little Secrets,” “Moth’s Wings,” “The Reeling,” “Let Your Love Grow Strong,” “To Kingdom Come,” and mega-hit “Sleepyhead.” “Smile Upon Me” was a huge treat. They’ve made the live version so much better than the original. Each time I’ve heard it they’ve added more complexity to it and at Mezzanine they absolutely blew it out of the water. I’d go see them every time they come to town JUST to hear the live version of “Smile Upon Me.” They closed with “Better Things” to a seriously amped-up crew of ultra-trendy 20-something San Franciscans.

Overall, this was one fun dance party. They truly looked confident and happy onstage. Manners is a good glimpse of where they’re headed as a band, and I hope they continue to produce fun, smile provoking, foot tapping music. In a time where things are a little uncertain and tough, Passion Pit gives us a much-needed release. More music, please!

Phoenix/Passion Pit | 09.26 | Central Park

Phoenix & Passion Pit :: 09.26.09 :: Central Park SummerStage :: New York, NY

Phoenix

Perhaps it was the magic of an early fall night in the Big Apple, or the mysticism of Central Park, or the intimate, wooded enclave offered by the Central Park SummerStage, or the fact that Phoenix lead singer Thomas Mars has a child with Sofia Coppola that had me thinking about the themes in Lost in Translation. Coppola’s movie is so human, in that it portrays a confused and alienated Bill Murray and a vulnerable Scarlett Johansson struggling to identify with their loneliness. The film suggests that some of us consistently experience a sort of existential ennui that can only be overcome through personal connections.

Having recently started a new job in a new city (unfortunately NOT New York City), I was trying to forget any alienation or loneliness that was going on in my own life and enjoy the second night of Phoenix and Passion Pit‘s recent sold out shows. With some tickets selling on StubHub for upwards of $300, I was curious to see whether or not the two bands could live up to the accruing hype.

The Emerson graduates that comprise Passion Pit are a classic example of social networking wildfire. Just two years young, the group skyrocketed to success on the heels of lead singer-songwriter Michael Angelakos‘ Valentine’s Day present-turned-2008-EP Chunk of Change. After cracking a few obligatory Red Sox/Yankees jokes that can accompany any musical group from Boston playing in New York, Pit proceeded to wind through their frenetic, poppy, and concise songs with notable joy.

Laurent Brancowitz – Phoenix

As the area continued to fill with eager Phoenix fans, Passion Pit burst into their gem of the night, “Moth’s Wings” > “Sleepyhead,” which highlighted the band’s incredibly hectic breakdowns, their impressive handle on indie-pop-snyth rock sound, and most of all, Angelakos’ helium-balloon falsetto. Closing with “The Reeling,” the group posed an introspective question to the young crowd that seemed especially pertinent considering my earlier Lost in Translation musings: “Look at me, oh look at me/ Is this the way I’ll always be/ Now I pray that somebody will quickly come and kidnap me/ Everyday I lie awake and pray to God today’s the day/ Here I am, here I am/ When will someone understand?”

Before I had too much time to get carried away with any sort of metaphysical inner dialogue, Phoenix had already quietly ascended to the stage; their backdrop was a simple banner of the Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix bomb shaped artwork. The band that has recently appeared on Saturday Night Live, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, a Cadillac commercial, The Late Show with David Letterman, and most recently The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien had plenty of reasons to be cocky. But for such widespread recent recognition, their stage presence was humble and Mars warmly thanked the audience multiple times both in English and in French for making it to the show. They were impressive in their ability to connect with the crowd and draw in any doubters.

Phoenix

Any skeptics listening to the recorded versions of these songs and wondering how they would translate live would be blown away. In fact, one of the most enjoyable and surprising elements about Phoenix’s set was how flawlessly they integrated their well rehearsed, in-studio tightness with the necessary expansion that accompanies any talented band’s live show. There were moments where I wasn’t sure if I was seeing some sort of Radiohead/Animal Collective/Pink Floyd prototype; their lengthier songs such as “Love Like a Sunset” and “Funky Squaredance” possessed the intensity of Thom Yorke and co., the ambience of Animal Collective, and the “x-factor” that so often accompanied Floyd’s jams (think “Have a Cigar,” but without as many shearing Gilmour solos).

Powered by Mars’ smooth vocal delivery and Thomas Hedlund‘s acrobatic drumming, Phoenix was energetic to say the least. A well-orchestrated light show deftly accented everything from the band’s lightest, sauntering tunes (“If I Ever Feel Better” and “Girlfriend”) to their dance party, Daft Punk-like electronica influenced (“Rome” and “1901″) moments during the hour and a half set.

Another notable moment – which fully convinced me Phoenix is ready for superstardom – came when Mars and guitarist Laurent Brancowitz played the first two songs of the encore acoustic, including a conglomerate of spotlights focused on the lead singer’s head that created a halo effect.

As the last notes of “1901″ resonated into the City that Never Sleeps, I was again drawn back to those aforementioned Lost in Translation themes. Roger Ebert described the film in his 2003 Chicago Sun-Times article as “sweet and sad at the same time as it is sardonic and funny.” These comparisons can just as easily apply to many of Phoenix’s songs, which can be lyrically introspective and melancholy, yet musically vibrant. Just as Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson found a little solace in each other, Phoenix seemed to offer solace that everything really will work out because it’s all predetermined anyways: “Past and present they don’t matter… Now the future’s sorted out.”

Isn’t that escape and distraction music offers part of its inherent beauty?

Passion Pit Setlist:
I’ve Got Your Number, Eyes As Candles, Make Light, Let Your Love Grow Tall, Little Secrets, To Kingdom Come, Folds In Your Hands, Moth’s Wings > Sleepyhead, Smile Upon Me, Better Things, The Reeling

5 Ways to Set Your Goals in Stone

Most of us set goals for our lives. Whether the goal is to climb Everest or to buy a pair of shoes, setting goals can sometimes seem like second nature to us. Even so, setting a goal doesn’t automatically mean getting the result. Sometimes goals are gradually forgotten about and fade away into the back of our minds.

Motivation is the biggest goal killer. When we first set a goal, whether it’s to earn double what we earn now or achieve world domination, there is usually a reason behind that goal. People don’t jump out of bed with a goal out of the blue. There is a source of inspiration, something that has sparked our imagination. We usually see something, or read about something that makes us want our lives to change. There is an initial spark and we’re hit with a flood of motivation, and can’t wait to get started on this goal.

After a few weeks or even days, our enthusiasm dies down, and that spark of inspiration becomes a memory. We know what the goal is, but we no longer have that passion burning inside us and our momentum grinds to a stop.

To achieve goals that take time, we need to stay motivated, and we need to keep the inspiration flowing. The goals need to be constantly in our minds. Unavoidable and present wherever we are. If we’re constantly reminded of our goals, they never go away. This constant reminder means that goals are always on our mind, and easier to achieve.

As with most things, it’s better to keep this process simple. These are five suggestions that I use. They’re easy to do and don’t take much time, but the effects are obvious once you do them.

I’m going to start with what I find to be the most effective method, and the rest of the list will be in descending order (so you get the best stuff first).

  1. Create a “vision board” or “board of dreams”.

I found this method over at selfgrowth.com, and it always keeps me motivated. The idea is to get a notice board, and let your artistic side out. Create a shrine to what you want to achieve. Don’t just write a list. Stick up things that remind you of what it is that you want. Photos, gifts, memorabilia, letters, notes, pages from books. Anything that provides you with a reminder of that original inspiration. If you’re goal is to become wealthy, think of all the things that remind you of that goal. Houses, cars, yachts, people. The list is endless. Be creative: print a picture of the American Express Centurion card and stick that up until you can replace it with one of your own (you might have to phone American Express and say you lost your card to replace the one on the board). This board will engulf everything about your goal and show you all the reasons you want to achieve it.

Once done, stick it where you will see it most. I have mine facing my desk. Whenever I glance up from my monitor I see the board. When I’m feeling uninspired and ready to quit, a few minutes looking at my board, appreciating all the things that I want to achieve gives me that bit of inspiration needed to continue working.

  1. Photos (everywhere)

Visual stimulation can be much more powerful than words. Seeing the words “Aston Martin Vanquish” doesn’t compare to seeing an Aston Martin Vanquish. Images are a source of great inspiration. A quick look at advertisements will show that the ones providing visual stimulation work better than the ones with only words. Seeing a sunset isn’t the same as reading about it, no matter how good the writer. Get photos of what you want to achieve and stick them everywhere you can. Pictures of the people that inspire you doing what they do best are great. Decorate your home with them, put them on your desktop background, put them on your cell phone background, have photos on your desk of things that represent your aims. The picture isn’t as important as the emotional connection to your goal that comes with it.

Steve Pavlina suggests using digital photo frames. Digital photo frames allow you to have a slide show of images. Seeing these images will reinforce your desires, and remind you what you’re working towards.

  1. Leave notes (everywhere)

As well as the photos, have notes dotted around the place. Write notes that explain the photo you have chosen. A photo of a mansion with a pool with a note saying “I am going to buy this house” will further reinforce your goal. The more unavoidable and obvious your goals are, the easier it becomes to remember what you are working for. Notes can be left anywhere. I leave notes on my desk, by my bed, on the refrigerator door, in the bathroom (although they tend to get wet). Write on your spouse’s face when they’re asleep if you want to (okay, don’t. This isn’t a good idea…).

  1. Your most used applications

What applications do you use most? The majority of applications that are used everyday will have some way of keeping a note, whether it was meant for that purpose or not. I’m an avid user of iGoogle and my iGoogle homepage displays my goals every time I log in. Microsoft Outlook can do the same. Firefox can (there are handy notes add-ons!). Even Windows can. Google’s Desktop sidebar lets you save notes so that they’re ready for you when you log in. Whatever application you use the most, have it remind you of your goals.

  1. Tell people (but be selective)

Tell others about your goals. Tell the people that inspire you and will throw encouragement your way. The inspiring people in our lives will add to our momentum. Have a conversation about your goals often, don’t just tell other people and never mention them again. Remind others and talk about their goals as well as yours (don’t phone someone at 4am every morning to tell them about your goals, that doesn’t work either…). If your goals are well known and a regular talking point, you’ll never lose that inspiration.

Staying motivated past the original spark of inspiration is not easy. It can take discipline and a strong will to keep working towards a long term goal, but at the very least we can make things easier.

Remind yourself of the original moment you set your goal. The reasons you want to achieve that goal. The potential results of your hard work should be seen around your home or workplace.

Don’t stick to a list. Be creative, put effort into this and it will have a bigger impact on your life. Make a day of it and let the day become part of your memories. A day dedicated to decorating your house with reminders will stick with you longer than 10 minutes spent writing a list.

I’ve used all the methods above, and I find the vision board to be the most effective. Spending a few hours creating a collage of what I want to achieve helped the whole idea of the goal sink in, and I got to spend some time going through each aspect of the goal this way.

Hopefully with the above methods, you will find your goals become part of who you are, and you’ll find the journey to achieving them much easier.
