Google Apps Expanding as Google Preps for Microsoft Office 2010

Google May 6 said it will enable users to access Google Reader, Blogger and Picasa Web Albums from Google Apps in fall 2010, satisfying nine of the top 20 requests Apps users make from the company. The move signals an expansion of Google Apps beyond collaboration to other modes of information-sharing. This could provide some measure of defense as Google seeks to stave off challengers, such as IBM, Cisco and Microsoft, whose Office 2010 suite launches May 12.

Google Buys Picnik for Photo Editing in the Cloud

Google on March 1 bought Web-based photo-editing specialist Picnik for an undisclosed sum, adding another cloud computing tool to its arsenal. Picnik lets users import their photos from Picasa Web Albums, Flickr and the other aforementioned sites and make changes to them. Google will be working hard to integrate Picnik within Google and will add new features in the future. Picnic boasts 20 employees, who will join Google’s Seattle offices. One of these new employees is Picnik CEO Jonathan Sposato, who joined the Picnik team after selling his company Phatbits to Google.

Google Social Search Arrives to Challenge Facebook

Google Jan. 27 said it is taking its Google Social Search project to its core search engine with new features, a move to challenge Facebook in the battle for more users. Google Social Search drops content from searchers’ contacts directly into search results. In the next few days, users of the English language version of Google.com who are signed into their Google account will automatically begin seeing Google Social Search results for Google Images, displaying pictures friends have published to Yahoo’s Flickr or Google’s own Picasa Web Albums. Social Search also features two new links for My social circle and My social content.
