Qantas pilots saved crippled Airbus, investigator says

Pilots of a crippled Qantas (QAN.AX) Airbus A380 superjumbo struggled with more than a dozen system errors after an engine blew apart on Nov 4 and landed the plane in Singapore with barely any runway to spare, an Australian investigation showed.

In fact, the plane may have been so badly damaged that the five pilots, with a combined 72,000 hours of flying experience, may have saved the day.
“The aircraft would not have arrived safely in Singapore without the focused and effective action of the flight crew,” Martin Dolan, the Australian Transport Safety Bureau’s Chief Commissioner, said on Friday.

Russian cargo plane crash creates havoc in Karachi

KARACHI – A Russian cargo plane crashed in KarachiÂ’s Dalmia Naval Colony in the wee hours of Sunday, killing at least 11 people including all eight crewmembers on board and three on the ground.
The Sudan-bound four-engine plane took off from Quaid-i-Azam International Airport at 1.55 am and crashed after five minutes of its flight. Eyewitnesses said they saw planeÂ’s right engine was on fire before it plunged towards the ground and crashed causing a huge explosion.
Several residential buildings caught fire after the explosion. Rescue and relief teams rushed to the crash site. So far rescue workers recovered four bodies from the wreckage of the plane.
It is learnt that these cargo planes were normally used by NATO forces for shifting of cargo to Afghanistan. It was not immediately known what kind of cargo this plane was carrying from Karachi to Khartoum.
Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) spokesman Pervez George said first reports indicated it was a Russian cargo plane with eight crewmembers and it came UAE. He further said that normally such planes carry three or four people as crew. All the crewmembers were foreigners, he added.
The cause of the crash was not yet established by the CAA authorities. When contacted, airport authorities told this correspondent that it was too early to draw any conclusion. Replying to a question, they said apparently it was a technical fault that caused the crash. He, however, did not respond when asked if there could be a possibility of terrorist activity.
Dalmia is a thickly populated area near Gulistan-i-Johar.
Hundreds of people have gathered at the spot arrived on the spot while the crash site is on fire and thick smoke emitting from the scene, eyewitnesses said.
The local authorities declared emergency in all the Karachi hospital putting the staff on high alert. Meanwhile, a number of injured people were shifted to these hospitals. Condition of some of the injured was stated to be serious. A large number of ambulances were seen at the crash site ferrying injured to the hospitals.

Airbus v Boeing: Plane poker

Airbus plays the new-engine card

THE big aircraft get the big headlines as both Airbus and Boeing grapple with costly delays to their giant widebody jets, the A380 and the 787 Dreamliner. But the real poker game involves the humbler single-aisle Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 jets. With 120-180 seats, these aeroplanes are the workhorses of the sky, accounting for about four out of every five jets that the two manufacturers sell. This week Airbus raised the stakes when its executives agreed on an A320 upgrade.

The official launch still awaits approval by the board of EADS, the parent company of Airbus. But John Leahy, the head of sales at Airbus, says he is looking forward to selling the A320 NEO (which stands for “new engine option”) from the middle of this month. Tom Enders, Airbus’s CEO, says that the last remaining niggle was whether the company could spare enough senior engineers for the project without hurting other new planes in the works. …

Plane crashes in Margalla Hills

ISLAMABAD – An Air Blue passenger plane crashed due to bad weather here in Margalla Hills on Wednesday, killing all 152 people on board.
The flight number ED 202, crashed into a heavily wooded and hard-to-access hillside, while flying from Karachi, just minutes before landing on Benazir Bhutto International Airport and all 146 passengers and six crewmembers died.
Prime Minister of Youth Parliament, Hasan Javed Khan, his five colleagues, an Austrian scientist and two US nationals are among the dead.
It was observed during the visit of the accident site that body parts of the deceased were scattered all over. Some of the limbs and flesh organs were found on bush and the branches of trees. Most of the dead bodies were completely charred and beyond recognition.
As the news of the crash broke out, a large number of volunteers and officials of Rescue 1122, Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS), Civil Defence of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, Rangers, and Pakistan Army rushed towards Daman-e-Koh, the site of the accident. They succeeded to reach the spot after a hectic walk of more than an hour on a dangerous hilly track. On the other hand, heavy rain and air pressure also created problems for the rescuers, while helicopters, despite several attempts, could not land on the site due to landslides and trees around the site.
“I saw a plane hovering over Margalla Hills and all of a sudden it crashed,” an inhabitant of the area informed.
“There is no survivor and not a single corpse can be recognised,” said a volunteer Atif Ali, a student of International Islamic University.
The volunteers collected the scattered body parts in bags and sent them to hospitals via Army helicopters, while volunteers brought a number of bodies in their hands after crossing dangerous mountains.
Some 300 body bags, 40 blankets and a dozen bundles of rope were airdropped at the crash site. The helicopter service was suspended for some hours due to heavy rain, however it was restarted when the rain was over. Four army helicopters took part in the operation. These volunteers shifted the remains near Daman-e-Koh, which were later brought to PIMS, Poly Clinic and other hospitals through ambulances.
Several Federal Ministers including Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Syed Khursheed Shah and Nazar Muhammad Gondal visited Daman-e-Koh but they could not reach the site due to bad weather and difficult hilly track.
Meanwhile, Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik confused the whole nation by saying that five people had been rescued and shifted to nearby hospitals. However, later he confirmed that there were no survivors.
Federal Interior Ministry established a helpline (051-9211223-4) in National Crisis Management Cell to facilitate the relatives of victims.
A group of woodcutters equipped with saws and sharp axes was also summoned to cut trees for setting up a temporary helipad at the site to make way for volunteers for brining bodies to Damn-e-Koh.
More than 130 dead bodies have been retrieved from the site till filing of this report.
