A new planet: Vulcan?

Time to start giving extrasolar planets proper names

ASTRONOMERS are a curious bunch. Some like to name things. Others prefer numbers and letters. Those who study the solar system fall into the former camp. Every planet, asteroid, moon, mountain and crater has its name. Mankind’s mythologies have been ransacked so thoroughly that the need to identify each orbiting rock has resulted in such curiosities as Zappafrank, Lennon, McCartney and even Bagehot. Those who study other planetary systems have been more restrained. Planets orbiting stars beyond the sun are labelled merely with the name of the star and a suffix letter. Even if planets and moons were found round Alpha Centauri, as envisaged by the writers of “Avatar”, they would not get glorious monikers like Polyphemus and Pandora. They would just be letters—and lower-case ones, to boot.

That is sad. Though the nominative diarrhoea of the solar system may have gone a little far, a well-chosen name is both picturesque and memorable. Perhaps, therefore, it is time to change the convention and give such a name to an extrasolar planet. And an ideal candidate has just turned up—one that matches one of astronomy’s own myths: the legendary, non-existent planet Vulcan. …

Innovation@Intel: Can Computer Gaming Help save the Planet?

Intel Researchers demonstrated at today’s Research@Intel Day, in Mountain View, California, how computer games could potentially assist in environmental policymaking, with current efforts focused on water allocation policy. Researchers hypothesize that immersive games can facilitate public participation and provide insight to decision makers about the effects of various policy alternatives. In addition, game-play observation could enable more accurate modeling of human behavior. Working with colleagues at Sandia National Labs, Intel researchers simulated New Mexico’s Middle Rio Grande Conservancy District at ScienceSim, a virtual world based on OpenSim for scientific collaboration and education. They created a role playing game that allows players to act out various stakeholder roles such as farmers, developers, manufacturers, environmentalists, and policy makers. Artists Raise Money and Awareness with 1% for the Planet Album

1% for the Planet, a global network of 1,200 companies that donate 1% of annual sales to environmental causes, has released a digital music compilation: 1% for the Planet: The Music, Vol. 1, the world’s first music compilation dedicated to supporting non-profit organizations working to create a healthy planet. The album aims to accelerate the 1% movement by engaging more people and inspiring more companies to join.

In early January the album hit #1 on Amazon.com’s MP3 download chart, and broke into the top 50 on iTunes’ bestselling album list. Featuring more than forty tracks for only $9.99, the album can be found on the 1% music web site, and on all major music download sites.

More than 40 musicians have donated music to the album and are featured on the 1% music site. Leading artists, including Jack Johnson, Jackson Browne, and Grace Potter, gave rare and exclusive tracks. “The artists are amazing. They have been incredibly supportive of the project from the beginning, and their passion is infectious. Fans hear the artists’ music and are inspired to get involved themselves” says Melody Grote, VP of Marketing and Acquisitions, 1%.

In the spirit of reducing waste generated from the distribution and disposal of traditional CDs, the album is an all-digital release. At the new 1% music web site, fans can sample and buy the music, see what the artists are saying about their involvement in the cause, and spread the word online. Supporters can visit the site to get a web badge to display on their site or blog, or use social media tools like Facebook and Twitter to spread the word.

Though the release is all-digital, the compilation is also available to offline purchasers. With a greater number of consumers buying CDs only to store them after they’ve saved the music digitally, 1% for the Planet offers consumers and retailers a more earth-friendly option in purchasing music. Eco friendly download cards allow the music to be merchandised in retail stores alongside regular CDs. The download card evokes the look and feel of a CD but is made entirely of recycled paper. Consumers purchase the download card with an enclosed access code which allows them to download the music. The new format is available now to retailers worldwide.

1% for the Planet: The Music, Vol. 1 is an easy way to make a difference for anyone who loves good music,” says Grote. “Listeners can share the music online with their friends, family and colleagues in order to exponentially increase giving to the environment.”

Details on all 41 tracks can be found at music.onepercentfortheplanet.org.

Planet hunting: Looking for life in the shadows

The search for a second Earth gets serious

IN THE 19th century astronomers spent a lot of time seeking shadows crossing the sun. They were searching for Vulcan, a putative planet inside the orbit of Mercury, by looking for its transits. These are the moments when, viewed from Earth, the hypothetical planet would cross the solar disc. Sadly, there was no Vulcan to be found, but the method itself is sound, and it is the modus operandi of Kepler, an American probe that has been trailing round the sun in the Earth’s wake since March 2009.

Kepler is a telescope that looks simultaneously and continuously at more than 150,000 stars, recording the amount of light coming from them. It is seeking the tiny, periodic diminutions of illumination caused by planetary transits and, on January 4th, the team running it announced at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society, in Washington, DC, that five such patterns had shown up in the first six weeks of the probe’s operation. …

Big Blue says the world is becoming instrumented (by 2010, there will be a billion transistors per human, each one costing one ten-millionth of a cent); more interconnected (a trillion networked things); and more intelligent (thanks to algorithms and powerful systems that can analyze mountains of data to make decisions and to take actions). IBM aims to provide the technology that can connect the systems running the world, making the planet smarter: with less traffic, healthier food, cleaner water, safer cities. Here are 25 things you might not have known about IBM’s Smarter Planet initiative. IBM’s Smarter Planet strategy nears its first anniversary as eWEEK publishes this slide show.
