1832: Gustave Eiffel is born in Dijon, France. His innovative metal-structure design still supports buildings, bridges and even statues.
Eiffel was graduated from the Ecole Centrale des Arts et Manufactures in 1855. He began his career by supervising railway construction in southwest France. He set himself up as an independent “constructor” in 1866.

Saudi princess robbed in Sardinia

map

Italian police are investigating the theft of some $16m (£10m) in cash and jewellery from a Saudi princess staying on the Italian island of Sardinia.

The thieves used a master key to gain entry to her luxury hotel suite in Porto Cervo before ripping a safe from the wall, Italian media reports say.

They said the safe was only fixed with silicon to the wall in the suite.

Officials have not named the princess but say Italian and Saudi diplomats have had talks about the incident.

"The thieves used a master key. In 10 minutes at dinner time, without making any noise, they managed to remove the safe from a suite occupied by the Saudi princess," Italy’s La Stampa newspaper reported.

The hotel is located in one of the most chic resort areas on the Italian island.

Football honours Sir Bobby Robson

Sir Bobby Robson

Leading figures from football have paid tribute to Sir Bobby Robson after his death at the age of 76 following a long battle with cancer.

Robson was a renowned and revered figure in football and led England to the World Cup semi-finals at Italia 90, where his side were agonisingly beaten on penalties by West Germany.

As a player, the wing-half had spells at Fulham and West Brom, while also winning 20 England caps.

He successfully moved into management, taking charge at Fulham, Ipswich, PSV Eindhoven, Sporting Lisbon, Porto, Barcelona and Newcastle in his coaching career.

Here, the football fraternity leads the tributes to Robson.

FORMER ENGLAND CAPTAIN BRYAN ROBSON

"He called me his Captain Marvel and it stuck for the rest of my playing career. It made me very proud but it was only typical of the respect he earned from myself and the rest of the dressing room.

"I have never come across anybody with such a passion for football. We had a tremendous personal relationship as manager and skipper.

"Any criticism he had of a player was kept very private and publicly he gave all of us his total backing.

"We stayed pretty close even towards the end and, along with many other friends, I enjoyed his company in Portugal playing in his Golf Classic. He will be missed by everybody who knew him."

MANCHESTER UNITED MANAGER SIR ALEX FERGUSON

"I was never too big or proud to ask him for advice which he gave freely and unconditionally. And I’m sure I am speaking for a lot of people when I say that.

"In my 23 years working in England there is not a person I would put an inch above Bobby Robson. I mourn the passing of a great friend, a wonderful individual, a tremendous football man and somebody with passion and knowledge of the game that was unsurpassed.

"His character was hewn out of the coal face, developed by the Durham mining background that he came from. His parents instilled in him the discipline and standards which forged the character of a genuinely colossal human being. He added his own qualities to that which then he passed on to his sons.

"The strength and courage he showed over the past couple of years when battling against his fifth bout of cancer was indescribable. Always a smile, always a friendly word with never a mention of his own problems.

"The world, not just the football world, will miss him. Let’s hope it won’t be long before another like him turns up because we could never get enough of them."

SCOTLAND MANAGER GEORGE BURLEY

"It was a big decision for me and my parents to make such a long journey at that age," said Burley, who played under Robson after leaving his home in Ayrshire to join Ipswich as a 15-year-old.

"But Sir Bobby was like a father to me, taking a personal interest in me right from the start, always checking whether I was happy. His support and enthusiasm was the perfect cure for homesickness and helped my career to get off the ground and thrive.

"I’ll never forget when in 1973, the day before we played Manchester United at Old Trafford, he took me to one side and told me I would be making my first-team debut. I was 17 and the player I had to mark just happened to be George Best.

"My parents came down from Scotland to watch the game and I remember him getting off the team bus and presenting them with two directors’ box tickets. We lost 3-0 but Sir Bobby was magnificent, telling me how well I’d played. It did wonders for my confidence.

"I went on to play over 500 games for Ipswich in a side that drew inspiration from its manager. From 1972 we qualified for European competitions nine out of 10 years which was remarkable considering the size of our squad and our standing as a small-town club.

"That was all down to his man-management, tactics and judgement. No finer example of that was when, after we won the FA Cup, he sold Brian Talbot to Arsenal for £450,000 and spent less than that to bring in that fabulous Dutch pair Arnold Muhren and Frans Thijssen.

"I could not possibly get my head round how my career would have gone had it not been for Sir Bobby Robson. I owe him everything and I only hope I can be guided by the example he showed me."

ENGLAND MANAGER FABIO CAPELLO

"Sir Bobby was a wonderful man, a real gentleman. I remember very well the times I managed my teams against him.

"The first time being when Bobby was manager of Barcelona and I was in my first season with Real Madrid. Later, when he was Newcastle manager and I was with Roma we faced each other – as opponents, but always friends.

"Of course, I recall Bobby as a manager with Ipswich, but more so with England. To manage the national team for so long was a remarkable achievement, and we all remember how close he came to leading England to the World Cup Final in Italy.

"He went on to enjoy success with PSV Eindhoven, Porto, Sporting Lisbon and Barcelona before returning to ‘home’ with Newcastle.

"Earlier this year I spent some time with Bobby when he opened the new cancer treatment centre, for which he worked so hard to raise funds. He was a fantastic man, and loved by so many people. His spirit and courage was incredible. To fight cancer so many times really showed the strength of the man.

"All the time we spoke over a cup of coffee with his close family, his passion for football shone through.

"He loved the game and was extremely proud of his country and the North East region.

"I also recall the tribute dinner the LMA [League Managers' Association] hosted for Bobby when he wasn’t planning to say more than a few words. In the end he stayed on the stage for a very long time, telling story after story, much to everyone’s amusement.

"It’s extremely sad that Sir Bobby has lost his final fight against cancer, but he will never be forgotten. He really was a great man."

FORMER NEWCASTLE CHAIRMAN FREDDY SHEPHERD

"It’s very sad, especially on Tyneside. The whole of Tyneside will be grieving. Sir Bobby Robson was a great man and will be sorely missed.

"I worked with him for five years every day. He was certainly the best manager I ever worked with at Newcastle. He never put me under pressure and always tried to see my side.

"He wouldn’t put up with fools and didn’t take any nonsense. He came across as a very kind guy but underneath was very tough. He thought about football 24 hours a day and he would ring me at all hours of the day and never stopped thinking about football."

FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT PRINCE WILLIAM

"I am deeply saddened to hear about Sir Bobby Robson’s death.

"His contribution to English football as a player, manager and superb ambassador for our national game has been immense.

"He will be sadly missed by football fans everywhere, and I am thinking about his family at this difficult time."

PRIME MINISTER GORDON BROWN

"I was extremely saddened to hear of the death of Sir Bobby Robson. I had the privilege of meeting Bobby on many occasions. He epitomised everything that is great about football in this country.

"His passion, patriotism, dedication and professionalism knew no equal during his time both as a player and a manager.

"His remarkable achievements as manager of Ipswich Town and then of England are among the most distinguished in English football history, and he was able to replicate that extraordinary success during his time at PSV Eindhoven, Porto and Barcelona.

"Over the past few years, he fought cancer with his characteristic tenacity and good humour.

"He will be sorely missed – not only in Newcastle and Ipswich, both of whom he served with such devotion, but by all sports fans in our country. My sincere condolences go to his wife Elsie and his family."</p

Porcupine Tree: Incident

Porcupine Tree Unravel New Album The Incident Due September 22

Porcupine Tree

Inspired by a flashing road sign that reduced a horrible traffic accident to the antiseptic phrase “POLICE-INCIDENT,” British prog act Porcupine Tree‘s front man Steven Wilson composed the 55 minute, 14-track song cycle as a reflection on other “incidents” reported in the media and news.

The different topics include – the evacuation of teenage girls from a religious cult in Texas, a family terrorizing its neighbors, a body found floating in a river by some people on a fishing trip, and more. Each song is written in the first person and tries to humanize the detached media reportage.

Personal incidents that profoundly affected Wilson, have also been included on the new album include a lost childhood friendship, a seance, his first love, and the day that he decided to give up secure employment to follow his dream of making music.

The new album is in typical Porcupine Tree fashion and as presumed the band ranges effortlessly between art-rock and acoustic psychedelica, prog, and metal. Listen to an album preview medley at the band’s MySpace page.

The Incident will also come with a second CD of four songs that developed from band’s writing sessions last year but which are conceptually independent from the set of songs on the first disc. It will also be released as a 5.1 surround mix and as a limited special edition that comes with two books of artwork related to the album encased in a slipcase.

Berlusconi digs himself a bigger hole

Tape has Italian PM telling escort of unreported find of ancient burial site on his estate

The Silvio Berlusconi tapes released this week have focused, not surprisingly, on lurid discussions of threesomes, condoms and staying power. But today Italy’s prime minister was facing the bizarre possibility that the most explosive secret in the recordings was neither sexual nor financial, but archaeological.

In one recording posted on the website of the news magazine L’Espresso on Thursday, Berlusconi is supposedly showing the “escort” Patrizia D’Addario around his estate on Sardinia. He points out an ice-cream shop built for his guests and then draws her attention to an artificial lake with swans.

After noting that the lake is adorned by a fossilised whale, Berlusconi purportedly adds: “Underneath here, we found 30 Phoenician tombs from 300BC.”

This was news to the archaeological community. And sensational news, too.

A necropolis under the estate near Porto Rotondo on the Costa Smeralda would be evidence of Phoenician settlement in an area where none were thought to have been situated. Italy’s National Association of Archaeologists said it would be “of the utmost importance for the study of Phoenician expansion on the island”.

Of more immediate concern was why, if such an obviously important discovery had been made during the excavation of the lake, the authorities were not notified. Government officials in nearby Olbia knew nothing about it. This is a serious matter. Failure to report an archaeological find within 24 hours is an offence in Italy punishable by up to 12 months in prison.

The opposition Democratic party, which had been looking for a way to embarrass the prime minister without getting immersed in his eventful sex life, was not slow to spot the opening. Representatives in both houses of parliament tabled questions, demanding that Berlusconi and his heritage minister give an explanation.

The prime minister has already reneged on a promise to explain his relationship with a teenager and laughed off the dissemination of the recordings. It remains to be seen whether the dead will succeed where the living have failed and force him to account for his behaviour.

Downturn hits most expensive streets

The global financial crisis has squeezed property prices, but how has it affected those at the very top?

Avenue Princesse Grace in Monaco is the most expensive street in the world, with each square metre in an apartment setting you back £73,000 – or about the same as a 70-square-metre apartment on the seafront in Hastings, according to Dow Jones’ Wealth Bulletin.

But the palm-lined street, named after the Hollywood star Grace Kelly and popular with Russian oligarchs, is suffering from “la crise du credit” like everywhere else. The bulletin shows top prices paid for apartments, are down by 37% from 2008′s peak of £116,000 a square metre.

Overall, prices paid for prime residential property in the world’s fanciest locations have fallen by 12% over the past year, although Europe fell less sharply than the US and Russia.

Via Suvretta in the Swiss ski resort of St Moritz was the only street on the list where prices for top properties have risen since 2008. Prices are up by 18% to around £27,500 a square metre.

The world’s second priciest street, the Chemin de Saint-Hospice, is a 20-minute drive along the coast from Monaco, snaking through on Cap Ferrat. It numbers just 15 houses, commanding beautiful Mediterranean views.

According to Wealth Bulletin, local estate agents say there is one property for sale on the street, but it is being sold privately and its price a closely guarded secret. It estimates that property on the street goes for an average of £61,000 a square metre.

New York’s Fifth Avenue pips London’s Kensington Palace Gardens to third place in the survey, with apartments selling for around £44,000 a square metre. Although a 400 sq/m apartment overlooking Central Park on the Upper East Side of Fifth Avenue sold for $29m in June, local agents say the market has come off the boil, and remains affected by a lack of supply

Fourth-placed Kensington Palace Gardens is Britain’s most exclusive address, best-known as London’s embassy row, including the Russian delegation. Prices in the street are estimated to have fallen by 15%-20% over the past year.

The world’s top 10

1. Avenue Princesse Grace, Monaco, £73,000 per sq/m

2. Chemin de Saint-Hospice, Cap Ferrat, South of France, £61,000 per sq/m

3. Fifth Avenue, New York, £44,000 per sq/m

4. Kensington Palace Gardens, London, £40,000 per sq/m

5. Avenue Montaigne, Paris, £33,000 per sq/m

6. Via Suvretta, St Moritz, Switzerland, £27,500 per sq/m

7. Via Romazzino, Porto Cervo, Sardinia, £26,000 per sq/m

8. Severn Road, The Peak, Hong Kong, £24,500 per sq/m

9. Ostozhenka Street, Moscow, £21,000 per sq/m

10. Wolseley Road, Point Piper, Australia, £17,000 per sq/m

Arturo gatti wife picture

SAO PAULO (AP) — Brazilian authorities detained the wife of former boxing champion Arturo Gatti and formally accused her Sunday of killing him at a posh seaside tourist resort in Brazil.
Police said 23-year-old Amanda Rodrigues was taken into custody after contradictions in her interrogation and presented a formal accusation against her. Prosecutors will later [...]

Police arrest wife of boxer Gatti

Arturo Gatti

Brazilian police have questioned the wife of a former world boxing champion, Arturo Gatti, after he was found dead in a hotel in north-eastern Brazil.

The Canadian’s body was discovered on Saturday at a holiday resort where he had gone with his wife and son.

Authorities say Gatti, 37, may have been strangled with the strap of a handbag and had a mark on his head.

He was IBF super-featherweight champion in 1995 and WBC light-welterweight champion in 2004, and retired in 2007.

His three-fight series with Micky Ward in 2002 and 2003 established him as one of the world’s most exciting fighters.

Arguments

Gatti had been on holiday in the Porto de Galinhas resort with his Brazilian wife, Amanda Rodrigues, and their one-year-old son.

Police said there were inconsistencies in Ms Rodrigues’ statement but that she denied any involvement in her husband’s death.

Gatti’s body was reportedly found in the couple’s holiday apartment.

However, police remain unsure how Ms Rodrigues stayed in the apartment for around 10 hours – with the couple’s one-year-old son – without noticing that her husband was dead.

Detectives are also investigating reports that the couple had been arguing before returning to their room on Friday evening and that Gatti had been drunk.

The couple are said to have rented the apartment for a month in order to have a "second honeymoon" but only arrived on Friday, reports the BBC’s Gary Duffy, in Sao Paulo.

Glittering career

Gatti’s career spanned 49 fights and he won 40 of them, 31 by knockout.

He first fought Micky Ward in May 2002 and the pair traded devastating blows for 10 rounds before Ward earned the split decision from the judges.

The rematch was just as brutal, with Gatti knocking Ward down in the third round with a big right. Ward not only recovered from the blow, which broke Gatti’s hand, but managed to go the distance. This time, Gatti earned a unanimous decision.

Gatti and Ward had their decider at Boardwalk Hall in June 2003, Ward knocked Gatti to the floor in the sixth round, but despite fighting with his right hand broken again, Gatti managed to win the decision.

Ward and Gatti became close friends toward the end of their careers.

"Hearing what happened to Arturo is like a piece of you is gone"

Micky Ward

Ward told The Ring: "I’m walking around in a daze. I’m just dazed by it all. You fight a guy, you go to war with them, and there is a respect there. But with me and Arturo, it was greater.

"There was a real bond between us. It’s why hearing this, hearing what happened to Arturo is like a piece of you is gone, because we shared so much of everything in the ring. We were friends, close friends."

Gatti eventually retired two years ago following a seventh-round knockout defeat by Alfonso Gomez.

Kathy Duva, of Gatti’s promoters Main Events, described his death as an "unspeakable tragedy".

She said: "His entire boxing career he fought with us, we’ve known him since he was 17. He just captured the imagination of so many people."

Duva added: "I remember walking away from his last fight and somebody walked up to him in the casino late at night and congratulated him.

"He said ‘Why did he congratulate me’ and I said ‘He was excited to meet you’ and he kind of looked very surprised by that. He had no idea what an icon he was or how much he meant to people."</p
