Justin Townes Earle: New Album & Tour Dates

FOLLOW-UP TO 2009′S MIDNIGHT AT THE MOVIES OUT SEPTEMBER 14 VIA BLOODSHOT
RECORDS

Justin Townes Earle

Bloodshot Records is pleased to announce the impending release of Harlem River Blues, the third
full-length from
Justin Townes Earle. The
record, in stores September 14, is the much-anticipated follow-up to 2009′s Midnight at
the Movies
.

Compared to the much-lauded Midnight at the Movies, Harlem River Blues is more mature and
increasingly
nuanced, while still embracing the raw voice and clean sound of previous standout tracks like “Mama’s Eyes.”
Featuring guest appearances from Jason Isbell, Bryn Davies and Calexico’s Paul Niehaus, it’s rockin’ and reelin’ at
times, sweet and slow at others – and it’s great. Like good fried chicken, a well-cut suit and a hand made guitar,
there’s heaven to be found in the beautifully crafted simpler things.

In what is becoming a Father’s Day tradition (see 6/21/09), the show-opening Brother featured the band
members’ children jumping into a bathtub on stage, followed by Trey introducing each of them and wishing
everyone a Happy Father’s Day. Gotta Jibboo featured Tony Markellis on bass and Mike on a second guitar. The end
of Wilson contained a Dixie tease from Trey. In place of a traditional Makisupa keyword, Trey improvised lines that
set up solos for Mike, then Fish, then Page. The subsequent Piper intro included repeated phrases from the Makisupa
(“Mike,” “Policeman” “SPAC” and “House” among others).

Widespread Panic and The Allman Brothers Band began the second leg of their co-headlining tour over the weekend with a pair of shows at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Charlotte, NC. On Saturday evening guitarist Warren Haynes was unable to perform due to travel complications and Jimmy Herring subbed for the entire show. Widespread Panic: Fall Tour Dates & Archive Release #4

Widespread Panic

Widespread Panic tour dates for November have just been released. This tour finds the band heading out West, the Midwest, and back down to the Southeast. Dates include three-night runs in Los Angeles and Oakland, CA, and Milwaukee, WI.

The band will also release Archive Release #4 – Club Soda, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, September 8, 1997. For this live offering Panic goes north of the border for a gem that not too many people were aware of at the time… or maybe even since. Having played some traditional arenas and stages in the 1990′s, the boys find themselves back where it all began… in a bar. Only this time, it’s in the second largest French-speaking city in the world. Certainly a world away from Athens, GA. From the opening notes of “Heroes” all the way through the four song encore, the crowd makes the boys feel right at home. Whether you were there or have heard it since, you haven’t heard it like this. WP Sound Engineer Chris Rabold has once again dialed in the multi-track mix that puts you right in front of the soundboard and captures the energy that creates this show.

So, take a trip out to LiveWidespreadPanic.com or Widespread Merchandise for the pre-order routine, hang tight until the official release date of 10/6/09 hits and then sit back, relax, and enjoy our road trip to Canada.

Obama tackles healthcare critics

Barack Obama

US President Barack Obama is to face questions on his healthcare reform proposals at a town-hall style meeting in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

A number of recent healthcare forums, organised by Democratic lawmakers, have been marked by rowdy behaviour from opponents of reform.

Passing a healthcare reform bill is Mr Obama’s top domestic priority for 2009.

But lawmakers were unable to agree on the details of reform before breaking for their August recess.

Meetings disrupted

Some 47 million Americans currently do not have health insurance, and rising healthcare costs are a major contributing factor to America’s spiralling budget deficit.

But there is disagreement about how to go about reforming the system.

HEALTHCARE IN THE US

  • 47 million uninsured, 25 million under-insured
  • Healthcare costs represent 16% of GDP, almost twice OECD average
  • Reform plans would require all Americans to get insurance
  • Some propose public insurance option to compete with private insurers

Q&A: US healthcare reform

Democrats in the House of Representatives have reportedly reached a deal on a bill that would mandate all Americans to take out health insurance, with subsidies for the less well-off, paid for by a surtax on families earning over $350,000 a year.

The House bill would also offer Americans who do not get coverage through their employer the chance to join a publicly-run scheme.

But in the Senate, negotiations have stalled, with moderate senators expressing opposition to the surtax and the public plan proposed by the House of Representatives.

Both chambers need to agree on a bill before it can become law.

Mr Obama wants to pass healthcare reform by the end of the year, and had called on the Senate and the House to agree their own versions of a bill before the August recess, but lawmakers missed the deadline.

During the recess, a number of healthcare "town-hall" style meetings hosted by Democratic politicians have been targeted by conservative opponents of reform.

The opposition has sometimes been quite rowdy, with anti-reform campaigners chanting slogans and shouting down supporters of a healthcare bill.

Proponents of reform say the protests are being organised by well-funded lobbying groups, while opponents say they are a genuine expression of anger at Mr Obama’s proposals.

Polls suggest that a majority of Americans support many of the administration’s healthcare reform proposals.
