Are the bugs in wild animals resistant to antibiotics?
BACTERIA that are resistant to antibiotics are becoming disturbingly common in people. More worrying still is that the genes which confer this resistance are also showing up in bacteria found in other animals. When resistant bacteria hop between species, that can increase the rate of evolution and, over time (through the sharing of independently evolved traits) turn a mildly resistant bug that is merely a nuisance into a serious threat.
This has left researchers wondering how resistant bacteria get into animals in the first place. One possibility is that genes for antibiotic-resistance circulate naturally in wild populations. Many antibiotics are, after all, derived from the natural defence mechanisms of other micro-organisms, so it is not unreasonable to think that antiantibiotics, too, are widespread in nature. Another possibility is that human antibiotic use has promoted the circulation of resistance genes to other species. …

Terry commits his future to Chelsea

John Terry has broken his silence over his future plans, stating that he is “totally committed” to Chelsea despite persistent interest from Manchester City. In a statement released on Chelsea’s official website, Terry said he had never considered leaving the club.
“There has been a lot of speculation recently about my future and I want to clear this up once and for all,” said Terry. “I am totally committed to Chelsea and always have been. Chelsea have also made it clear to me consistently that there was never any intention to accept any kind of offer.
“When you are linked with any club, or with a manager who I have huge respect for, it will always make headlines but me leaving Chelsea was never a possibility.”
Terry had previously refused to comment on his future despite almost constant pressure to do so over the past month. City had an initial bid for the defender turned down by Chelsea at the beginning of July and had continued to pursue the player publicly, with their manager Mark Hughes claiming that Terry was seriously considering the move.
“I know there has been comment that I should have made a statement earlier,” said Terry. “However, throughout this period there have been numerous discussions between myself, the owner and the Chelsea board and we all agreed that the timing of any statement would suit everyone involved in those talks, not any outside influences or agendas.
“What is clear to me following those discussions is that Chelsea’s ambition remains as high as ever. This has been further proved by the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti. I am certain that he will take this club on to the next level. Another important factor was knowing that Chelsea would be securing key current players for the long term. The strengthening of the squad around this core is crucial to pushing us on to greater success.
“I am as committed as ever to helping drive Chelsea forward and I will be proud to lead the team for as long as I can.”
