French competitiveness: France’s lost decade

A once-great industrial power looks for inspiration across the Rhine

AS GERMANY powers ahead, France is feeling blue. Its share of European merchandise exports has fallen from 15.7% to 13.1% in a decade. Last month a study comparing French exporters with German ones landed on the desk of France’s economy minister. It makes grim reading.

In 2000 French exports were 55% of Germany’s; now they are barely 40%. France is more competitive (a measure of price, quality and demand) in only three industries: aerospace, drinks and information technology. German cars, trucks and a host of other manufactured goods are streets ahead (see article). …

Solid-state batteries: The power of the press

A new process will make solid-state rechargeable batteries that should greatly outperform existing ones

ELECTRONICS made a huge leap forward when the delicate and temperamental vacuum tube was replaced by the robust, reliable transistor. That change led to the now ubiquitous silicon chip. As a consequence, electronic devices have become vastly more powerful and, at the same time, have shrunk in both size and cost. Some people believe that a similar change would happen if rechargeable batteries could likewise be made into thin, solid devices. Researchers are working on various ways to do this and now one of these efforts is coming to fruition. That promises smaller, cheaper, more powerful batteries for consumer electronics and, eventually, for electric cars.

The new development is the work of Planar Energy of Orlando, Florida—a company spun out of America’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory in 2007. The firm is about to complete a pilot production line that will print lithium-ion batteries onto sheets of metal or plastic, like printing a newspaper. …

Power.ME a Good Tool for Solo Use

AppTime’s Power.ME and Power.ME HD do a good job of providing a framework for individuals and ad hoc workgroups. What they offer is a brace of project- and task-management tools that allow users to maintain data synchronization across a range of mobile devices. Currently, iOS devices from Apple are supported, with Android support coming soon, according to the company. A Web client is also available. What they don’t offer& yet, anyway& is easy and straightforward integration with the rest of the business. If your need is for something that easily ties into Microsoft Exchange or a CalDAV-based system, keep looking. Although there are some questionable aspects of Power.ME, it’s useful as a tool for personal organization. It’s easy to create tasks, projects and folders, and to associate them as needed. The synchronization of these with the Power.ME service is impressively seamless. One drawback is the nonstandard user controls for editing and deletion. – …

French newspapers: Too close to power

A malaise that goes back more than 300 years

FRANCE’S second-largest economic daily, La Tribune, has suspended debt repayments while it seeks new investors. Le Monde, the country’s greatest newspaper, found new investors in June but seems to have lost its way and is looking for a new editorial director. Bakchich, a satirical weekly, said on January 11th that it will close for want of funds.

France’s national newspapers are shrivelling. The eight main national dailies together sell 1.2m copies a day—about the same as Britain’s slumping Daily Mirror. News-stand sales in November were 10% lower than a year earlier. For La Tribune the fall was a disastrous 33%. The overall drop in sales, including postal and delivered subscriptions, was less steep. …

Psychology: The power of posture

How you hold yourself affects how you view yourself

“STAND up straight!” “Chest out!” “Shoulders back!” These are the perennial cries of sergeant majors and fussy parents throughout the ages. Posture certainly matters. Big is dominant and in species after species, humans included, postures that enhance the posturer’s apparent size cause others to treat him as if he were more powerful.

The stand-up-straight brigade, however, often make a further claim: that posture affects the way the posturer treats himself, as well as how others treat him. To test the truth of this, Li Huang and Adam Galinsky, at Northwestern University in Illinois, have compared posture’s effects on self-esteem with those of a more conventional ego-booster, management responsibility. In a paper just published in Psychological Science they conclude, surprisingly, that posture may matter more. …

Virtual Power Plants Poised for Growth Thanks to Smart Technology

Analogous to what happens when server virtualization is used in a data center, virtual power plants use intelligent software to make more efficient use of resources. The key to the operation of a virtual power plant is to use information about resource utilization to dynamically balance loads in real-time. In particular, virtual power plants use intelligent software to link renewable energy generation systems, batteries for energy storage, smart meters, and in-home demand response systems. The true benefit of this approach is that virtual power plants can potentially delay the building of new power plants even as energy demands go up in the future.
